Registered 12 years agoI really like the sound of this!
I finished brothers last week but I doubt I'll be finishing many more now work has started up again.
This week I'm going to fire up Deadpool. I think I might actually knock together a list to look back on this time next year. Hopefully it'll either justify the silly amount of money I drop on the hobby or at least shock me into holding off on those sales! -

Registered 12 years agoHaving done the final count I played bang on 80 games last year, most to completion. Which seems like a lot.
Still have 90 unplayed games too, though to be fair at least 20 of those are PS+ freebies.
Well up for getting at least 52 this year, so far I've finished Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Dear Esther and abandoned Eldritch. -
Okay, week 1 for me (i.e. last week) is going to have to be credited to Day Z Standalone, which I pumped about 20 hours into.
General impressions - what have the developers been doing for the last 12 months? It's very similar to the mod, with all of the pros and cons that go with it, but I am surprised how little development there's been and how many things that were in the mod are not currently in the standalone version.
Pros - I feel like I have already got my money's worth from the game (I sold some cards and snow globes, so I paid £15), there are far more buildings to explore, the net code is generally pretty stable, it is as compelling as ever, the atmosphere of paranoia that comes with DayZ is still there.
Cons - the zombies aren't a significant threat at the moment, there are plenty of bugs (you will randomly fall down a ladder and die just as you have picked up some sweet gear), it's an alpha and there's a long way to go yet, you will spend much of the time running through empty villages, and...
...the biggest con of all is that the success of the game has brought in loads of new players who think DayZ is basically a deathmatch game, so most servers are now essentially kill on sight. This element alone severely spoils the game for me and actually decreases the tension, the 'what if' paranoia that used to come with encountering other players and so on.
Summing up - I'll certainly come back to it, but I won't be spending dedicated time with the game at the moment. I'm happy that I picked it up, but there's a lot of work that needs doing on it (which the devs do point out quite clearly).
Not sure what I'll play this week, but I'll report in at the weekend. -
Week 1 and I'm done with... Trials Evolution
So disappointed the way that this series has gone. Trials HD was already a step back for the series but Evolution is fucking nuts, and in all the wrong ways. The last thing the series needed was moving parts and "extreme" environments

Registered 9 years agoSounds good to me! With Christmas over, seems like I'll be getting less hours at work, which I've used most of the hours I put into work to buy games I haven't played.
The past week I've been playing Battlefield 4 (PS4) a fair bit, I've been steadily getting better, so I'll probably keep playing at it. Its fun, somewhat, my main issue is not having friends to play with, I've gotten a few now, so hopefully I'll be having a better time. My "Battlefield moment" was just me going up an elevator to the top of a building and throwing a grenade straight down onto someone and killing them, thought that was pretty funny. Still haven't seen a building collapse yet though, so thats disappointing.
A few weeks ago I started up The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past (First time playing through btw), got past the first couple dark world dungeons, so I'll play more of that this week. -

No, it was based on a goodreads book a week challenge (which I can just about manage if I spend all my commute time reading). Tough choices, more reading means less gaming and vice versa. Week 2 starts on 10th January. Next up for me is Eldritch, a recent purchase during the steam sale.

Registered 14 years agoSo far 2 games completed:
Tearaway 2nd Jan
Ghost Trick 7th Jan
Both started last year.
Next 2 targets are:
GTA V
Etrian Odyssey IV
Again started at the very end of last year.
Then:
Lego Marvel Heroes (started jan 14)
Persona 3 Portable (started oct 13)
Skyward sword (started nov 11)
Getting those completed is going to be tough. (Especially EO4, so may have to chuck in a couple of smaller games or those parked very near the end).
I know I am not quite in tune with the threads initial target but it works for me. -

Nice. We expect to see a full selection of charts and graphs to accompany your spreadsheet

Ditto, I exported my Steam collection using SteamDB and am holding it in an Excel spreadsheet for tracking. I'm also using folders in the Steam library itself

Registered 8 years agoI'm currently doing this with my ever growing Pile of Shame. Hitting up the Tomb Raider reboot with the aim to finish it this weekend. -
@neilka Mine's folded into 3 double-sided A4 sheets with tickboxes for various stages of play. Good enough for you? ;-P -
Right Tomb Raider done. Started last year but I'm using this "52 in 52" exercise as an excuse to get stuff finished.
Anyway, a bloody solid 7/10 -

Registered 13 years agoI'd love to do this, but it's never going to happen. Too much other stuff to do.
Having said that, yesterday I installed several of the games I bought in the Steam sales, so looking forward to trying some of them out. Civ V, Gone Home, Titan Quest, SW Battlefront 2 and Sang-Froid. May also install Alice: Madness Returns.
Of course, in order to play any of them I'll have to stop playing GT6.

Registered 16 years agoWeek 2: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time HD
A slight cheat on two counts, first I've finished previous versions on the PS2 and Gamecube, but this is the Trilogy Edition so it counts as new(ish). Second, I just couldn't face the other two thirds of the Trilogy Edition, the nosedive in quality seems even more steep viewed retrospectively. Who'd want to play as that permanently scowling, scar faced, gargoyle for the duration?
It's remarkable really, sequels which are inferior in practically every aspect are seldom seen when it comes to games.
At this point I think I can complete 52 games, but I suspect my backlog of relatively short games is going to start running dry. The moment a JRPG comes off the pile I'm in trouble, some of them take me months. -
Maybe a bit of a cheat going for something like this but cleared off Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble last night. Fun stuff, enjoyed it.
I need to clear short stuff like this so that I have room for some of my larger backlog games like Dishonored and Skyrim later this year

52 Games in 52 Weeks - Week 2
Ok, so today marks week 2 of the challenge. For those just joining us, I'll briefly state the challenge guidelines (there aren't any real 'rules').
- Each week you should attempt to try out a new or previously unplayed game. You can also restart games that you picked up before. Games you've played a lot don't count.
- You do not have to complete a game, you just have to try it. It's up to you to determine how far you want to take it. If you play it for an hour and hate it, that's ok. Nothing wrong with putting it down and trying something else.
- You are free to change or modify any of the guidelines as you see fit. The challenge exists simply to motivate people to try out new and unplayed games and hopefully reduce their backlogs.
- Each week you should try to post about what you've played and give any impressions etc.
My game for week 2 is going to be Eldritch (pc). It looks like its pretty short so shouldn't take too long to get a feel for it. -

Well it's useful for me, I have a backlog of something like 80 games I actively want to get through and would like to get the list down so I can sort my backlog list by average completion time and run through a few of the quick ones now. Already done Gone Home (1 hour) and Brothers (3 hours), doing Stanley Parable this weekend. Once I've done a few short ones I'll do a long one.

Registered 14 years agoIf you are trying to complete 52 games instead of play 52 then that would be useful.
A decent estimate is:
FPS: 6 to 12 hours
3rd person shooter: 8 to 20 hours
Western Action adventure: 8 to 20 hours
Sandbox: 30 to 70 hours
Japanese action adventure: 30 to 50 hours
JRPG: 40 to 120 hours
Platformers: 20 to 30 hours
WRPG: 100 to 200 hours
Tactics: 50 to 300 hours
Arcade Racer: 15 to 30 hours
Story based indie: 1 to 5 hours
Point and Click: 2 to 10 hours
I often get caught out by the length of platformers. They are often deceptively long.
My backlog is essentially a library of RPGs due to how long they take. -
Here's how I'm doing so far with a short impression from my spreadsheet:
Week 0(1st/2nd of Jan) = Brothers, a Tale of Two Sons - Very short, only took an afternoon to finish. Good fun, with real emotional impact.
week 1 = Deadpool: Very funny! A bit wonky but it makes up for it with a true love for the character involved.
I'll be finishing off the last bit of Deadpool tonight then starting Saints Row 4. Playing "funny" games, or story focused ones for that matter, is going to help with me actually finish stuff as my girlfriend wont mind watching while she's doing work or reading.
