Looking for better MP3 player software, because Creative's is rubbish!

I'm only now getting around to ripping CDs for my new MP3 player (it's this one) but the software supplied is absolutely horrendous. I remember someone posted a link to a much better alternative but I can't find it - anyone have any ideas what it was, or is it possible to use iTunes? There isn't a firewire port on the MP3 player, only USB2.

Also - iTunes is taking a really, really long time to rip the tunes - much longer than I remember it taking when I used to do it on the Mac. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

    Ta :)

Was it Musicmatch Jukebox that I posted a while back? Hate that now. I use RealPlayer. Much easier. :)

He didn't, I've been playing for the entire weekend but I really need to sort out my MP3 player for those crappy tube journeys in the mornings! I'm just taking a break. He keeps dying without me anyway! ;-)

    I've always liked audioograbber
especially since you can point it to a version of lame found in the Hydrogenaudio forums for really good encoding (the relevant posts are here)

Best of all, it's all free software!

It will rip a little faster if you set it not to play the track at the same time.

Statements of the obvious a house speciality ;)

Nooo, I didn't see your first post! I'm having a go at the Nomad Explorer again and if I still hate it I'll try Musicmatch. I hate realplayer though!

    Maybe I'm just too fussy.

    God.

My ripping speed is only 6x6. What the hell's going on there? Do I need to install some drivers for the CDRW drive? (we didn't do that when the PC was built... just stuck the thing in!).

I have no problems with Creatives stuff but I only use it for the actual downloading as its a bit quicker than WMP.

Notmad is supposed to be worth the £20ish it costs.

I use J River Media Center for absolutely everything - ripping, encoding, syncing to portable devices (including iPod and others), library management, track editing, video playback etc etc.

It's not free but it IS absolutely bloody excellent. I can't recommend it highly enough. There's a free 30 day trial if you want to check it out.

Why don't you just use iTunes?

    Preferences -> Import -> mp3 encoder

mp3 ripping is not something you can rush. The better the encoding, the longer it'll take. If the same programme takes longer on another platform, that could be down to a variety of reasons. But faster is not necessarily better.

An excellent alternative to iTunes on the PC is CDex with id3tagit to manage the tags.
