BLACKFISH - Killer Whales at SeaWorld Documentary Maker Gabriela Cowperthwaite Haven't seen the documentary, yet. This video with Gabriela Cowperthwaite shows enough to make those that work at Sea World seem somewhat misinformed. |

Registered 20 years agoIt's a very well made documentary and a good watch. It's mostly about sea world covering over the fact being a performer with the killer whales is dangerous.
I'll repeat it's well worth watching but it left me a cold. It's a killer whale, it's a deadly, intelligent hunter in the wild, a pack animal. They are highly intelligent and all have different personalities. I mean obviously it's dangerous and accidents will happen. No one would make a film about lion tamers getting hurt or crocodile trainers losing a foot. It was very well made and interesting but at the end I thought back and wandered what the point was. -

Registered 19 years agoI think it's more than that IJ. It was more about the fact that this particular Killer Whale had killed trainers before, and that Seaworld despite knowing this continued to put trainers in danger and make the animal suffer, all the while covering up the facts for their benefit.
The film is up on Netflix US if you want to watch it @takosuke.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I thought it was excellently made. And what those fishermen did in Washington in the 70s was horrific.

Strange how no one mentioned this when it was on BBC last year but now it's on American Netflix you can't go a day without someone telling you they've seen it -
I won't be watching it on Netflix, as i've ordered the Blu-ray.
I spotted another video on YouTube:
SeaWorld Killer Whale Trainer Responds to "Blackfish"
The trainer, Kyle Kittleson, claims Blackfish is 85% lies. I guess to hide from any backlash, he opted to disable comments for his video. He has added a link to his website, and seems more interested in promoting his book.
Kittleson lives in California with his boyfriend, Chase and their yellow lab, Callie.

Registered 19 years ago@graysonavich watching it on Netflix now, on-demand, is much easier than trying to watch something that was on the BBC last year .gif)
@takosuke, watching that vid now. Interesting, although he doesn't come across very well. -

I'll judge for myself, once i've seen it. It appears Blackfish is still causing waves, long after release.

I found this interesting:
SeaWorld shareholders won't consider PETA plan for whale sanctuaries.
Typical shareholders ;D

That's true but it wasn't just about that, it looked at the practise of training and keeping the animals as well. Anyway I don't want to put anyone off watching it as it's great.

Tilikum, the largest orca currently held in a tank, appears to have caused the most waves. As sad as his story is, an orca named Lolita, appears to have had it just as bad, possibly worse. Reading this news today, made me happy, even if the case probably won't come to much. Every time i read the words SeaWorld, and shareholder, you know it's all about money, greed, selfishness by all involved.
SeaWorld sued over 'enslaved' killer whales
Five killer whales have been named as plaintiffs in a lawsuit which argues they deserve the same constitutional protection from slavery as humans.

Blackfish 100/100
If i were an Orca trapped in a pool i would love to know this film was out there.
It's a well made documentary. It's informative, it's heart breaking. It's all too obvious, atleast to a normal human being, Killer Whales should not be kept in man made pools. The message seems clear - all the while there is big money to be made, companies like SeaWorld will continue to keep Killer Whales in captivity, and employ those who are willing to say what ever is required, weather it be to a paying audience, or a judge.
Fingers crossed, maybe some day (the sooner the better), Tillicum (Tilly for short), Lolita, and all the other captive Killer Whales (..and whales, Dolphins), including those being held at Loro Parque, will be set free. -
Did you make this film or something? -

Registered 8 years agoGlad dolphin captivity is not legal in the UK, very cruel practice. Also, it is easier, cheaper and fair better to go and see these animals in the wild. -

Registered 14 years agoEven India - not exactly at the vanguard of social progress, generally speaking - has banned the practice. They have also legally defined cetaceans as 'non-human persons'. (I'm not sure what that translates to in real terms, but it's a nice symbolic gesture.)
Meanwhile, France, Canada, the US, Spain, Japan and Russia continue to allow this shit. Russia apparently brought in two orcas (both captured in Japan) for the Sochi olympics, but eventually changed its mind and just sold them to China instead. -

It never fails to shock me, the corporate spin required by some companies, in this case SeaWorld, to defend what they do. They go all out to make up for the bad they do (housing huge animals in small spaces) by banging on about all the good they do, for example - returning animals like Turtles, back to the ocean. I guess turtles are more difficult to persuade to do tricks, and aren't such a crowd puller compared to Ocras.

SeaWorld's "Blackfish" Controversy Performed Another Trick
Aquatic amusement park company SeaWorld was back in hot water last week after a business journal caught the company inflating the results of an online poll. The poll question dealt with whether the recent documentary Blackfish had changed reader opinions about SeaWorld. - cont.

It goes from bad to worse. China have built (it's almost complete) a huge SeaWorld style place complete with the worlds largest Roller Coaster. Rumor has it, they want Orcas on display, and Russia might be behind supplying them

This is great news:
California politician proposes ban on Sea World’s controversial killer whale shows - cont.
..and more great news:
Shares of SeaWorld (SEAS) sank as much as 7% on Friday amid concerns about proposed legislation that would prohibit the theme park from using orcas in its San Diego shows. cont.

If you want to help free Tilikum and the others, your vote might count:
Sign the petition to the State of California
It only takes a second. Think of this poor chap:

Registered 20 years agoThe problem's not the shows, as I see it. Problem is killer whales are intelligent creatures, and if you act like dicks to them, they're going to get a little snappy. The stuff in the documentary (which I wrote about in either the film or documentary thread when it was on the BBC fwiw) about the capture and treatment of the creatures was horrific. -

Got round to watching this this evening. It's heartbreaking. Really well done documentary. Left me on the edge a few times in the way that senna did. It could have done with seaworld being asked about it, but then again their absence and refusal to speak just speaks volumes really.
