also, we like a lot of spanish language/european stuff...across the river, house at the end of time, los inocentes...the 'don;t be afraid of the dark' box set...back to the brilliant cronos and devil's backbone...i know not all these are from the past year - i'm just rambling as they come into my head....;)

@ChiefGB If you didn't like the Babadook you should lower your expectations for Under the Shadow.

Maybe a bit too mainstream for this thread but the Conjuring 2 is enjoyable haunted house horror fluff.

i'd second the conjuring 2 as 'actually surprisingly decent'

Yeah but a bit too long, tying into the Enfield haunting stuff was neat though because some of us of a certain age it still resonates (I wasn't old enough at the time but it's still a classic ghost story throughout recent times)

I enjoyed the Evil Dead reboot. There, I said it.

Also not new, but I've been itching to rewatch Drag Me To Hell. Really enjoyed that film, except for the crap CGI.

Is it filmed in Enfield? I grew up there. Would be cool to see it in a Hollywood film.

The sky mini series with Timothy Spall was better. I thought the conjuring 2 was actually pretty shit, all told.

Kind of interesting to see a film like this set in the UK, but it's just too Americanised to work.

Yeah I'd agree. The last third was fucking awful. First one was good though.

quite enjoyed the conjuring 2 first time i saw it...there are some decent bits in it (i like the nun scene as the shadow moves around the wall) but it was quite disappointing on a rewatch, especially the final part, as decks says...there are bits i enjoy in all the insidious/conjuring/james wan films but they suffer too much from their high gloss multiplex sheen for me...

You're next is a film worth a watch. One I've not seen talked about in here. On Netflix , as is housebound. Both house based invasion type stuff. Just seen both as I scanned through it, remembered having seen them both previously.

both great films...both have been mentioned on the general film thread, i think...the you;re next director is also responsible for the aforementioned 'the guest' and contributed to the first two v/h/s films...

i really liked housebound, must watch it again at some point...

Same. Still gonna watch the movie, but in trying to make him more obviously scary, they've just made him look more generically grimdark. And young. Far too young.

I don't know what it was about Tim Curry's, but something about the mundanity of his appearance made it seem like he could appear anywhere.

I didn't think a great deal of the old TV movie (too long and drawn out) so my hopes in this seem fairly tempered.
  • Deleted user 16 August 2017 11:24:36
I watched it aged 7 and it was the scariest damn thing I'd ever seen. Saw it last month though and it was less scary than the average X-Files episode.

The new one is going to be even longer and more drawn out. 135mins, just for part 1.

I'm always going to be comparing it to the book (which I know I shouldn't do) and it just looks to have got everything wrong. Pennywise isn't meant to look like a demon. He's meant to be someone that kids are drawn to before he becomes the one thing they fear the most ensuring a truly terrifying death.

Also, I watched Don't Knock Twice on Netflix last night. Katee Sackhoff's daughter summons a witch for some reason and nothing really happens. It's another in the style of Insidious, The Conjuring etc but not really recommended.

Read the book again late last year and whilst that's sort of right it's also because IT enjoys the form of the clown the most, and the subvertion of the joyful character into something terrifying. As King notes "everyone is scared of clowns". It's less about attracting the children and more with toying with them.

One thing that's worth noting also is that preview footage that was shown of the Gerogie sequence apparently shows just how Skarsgard (sp?) has made the role very much his own interpretation of the book Pennywise. The consensus from Bloody Disgusting and a few other sites was how playful he is when first encountering Georgie and how it is actually plasuable that Georgie would be drawn towards the stormdrain.

The trailers are also focusing primarily on Pennywise as he is, well, probably the thing that's going to sell the film to the general horror film going audience who don't know the source material, but it will adhere more to the book in that we will see far more of ITs forms as it takes on the childrens worst fears. Likewise they are only showing the parts where IT (as Pennywise) is menacing, as it makes a good trailer apart from anything else.

Anyway. I'm really hyped. I know that' probably a big mistake, and I'm well aware it could still turn out to be wank, but there is alot of positive buzz surrounding it at the moment which does fill me with hope.

Longer yes, drawn out, no. There is a lot of stuff to put in there. The book is fucking mammoth. Trailers are hinting that more aspects of the book will be brought to the fore (the corruption of Derry, the ironworks explosion, the Bradley gang massacre, more stuff on Bowers and his gang etc).

Anyway I'll shut up now in case it's shite.

    @Decks

that's the plan - first one focuses on them as kids - if successful (i assume it will be) they'll make the adult focused one...
  • Deleted user 16 August 2017 13:15:14
@wuntyphyve oh yeah definitely, love the book's diversions. I just wonder how smart it is to be including stuff like that in what will probably amount to a 4hr movie. It really feels like it would need a miniseries to do the whole thing justice.

Anyway it's out in a few weeks so we'll find out!

It's an old film now, but comedy/horror is very hard to get right. However, I think Hatchet does it remarkable well. Will give this another watch soon. The sequels are not so good.
