Thanks for the info. I thought Sky would block HD as an extra reason people should stay with them. I might find I miss the recording ability when I don't have it but I'll wait and see. With the free catchup services I can probably get away without recording.

I might try plugging my TV into the aerial just to see what I get too.

The only other thing I might need is something to watch Now TV. My TV might even have an app for that but otherwise I'll just want something with reasonably fast software and 5.1 sound ideally. That should be easy enough.

I used my Sky box as a Freesat box for a while but I hated all the dead channels that you have to flick through. Sure, you can set up favourites but using the EPG is a pig.

Spending the £150 on a Humax was worth it.

@DukeSilver Obviously the recording option is nice to have but every channel that's available on a dedicated Freesat box is available on an old sky box.
It's not though. Sky's version of freesat is so limited. Doesn't have half the channels normal Freeview or Freesat has.

Eidt:or rather, didn't used to, I use live telly so little it's been a while since I've flicked through.

Don't Ebay sell standard aerials that receive freeview channels for a few quid?

This is the kind of thing I mean:

If you want a basic package to compliment your Amazon/Netflix or other subscription I'd have thought that this would do.

Sky mobile any good? £25 a month for the new Samsung compared to £50 with 02

Virtually all of those are garbage though, bar the terrestrial channels and spin offs. I was about to claim that Freeview had less but better channels, but aside from Dave, that ain't true either!

Can honestly say that I don't miss the aimless flicking. Just watch stuff we want to watch now.

Here, freeview is missing BBC4 HD, ITV3, Dave, any of the channel 4 channels other than +1, more and film, film+1, and probably one of two others I'm not aware of. They're all on the semi-commercial multiplex that have decided it's not worth propagating up these parts.

Like giffgaff, which also run on top of the o2 network, I assume you don't get o2 priorities and a few little extras like that. If all you want is a phone that mostly works, go for one of the MVNOs if they're cheaper.

@Baihu1983 I hopped over to Sky Mobile for the iPhone X. I was on Three. Reception has been nigh on identical, so I'm happy with that. The data roll over thing is pretty decent as well, if you're a data user.

We got rid of Sky over a year or so ago, would have been paying over £90pm plus BT sport on top of that and we have our broadband supplied by Virgin Media.

Went with Now TV which we are currently paying £3.49pm for the entertainment pass and £3.99pm for movies. We also have Netflix at £7.99pm. Best thing we ever did.

Also ditched our 02 phone contracts of £38pm x2 and went sim only with Tesco mobile (still O2 network) with a better tariff for £16 each.

I do pay £45pm for our broadband (got rid of the landline) but as it's used pretty much non stop for gaming, tablets, mobile phones and TV it's worth it I guess, although I do contact VM every year for a better deal.

Since I started using Netflix I rarely channel flick. I had the moments of being overwhelmed by the choice on Netflix and could spend 20 minutes deciding/flicking but I've mostly got that under control. It's more of a conscious decision to pick things I'm interested in and watch them when I'm in the mood.

I started looking around after seeing that and have found people saying they got really good reception with that sort of thing, plus others saying they were rubbish. I might look into it a bit for those 12 hours of live football that are on TV each year but it could be the sort of thing I want.

Stream the free to air football via the Firestick/console app etc.
  • Deleted user 22 February 2018 11:17:08
What's the lag like with that? It's probably alright as my neighbours are far too polite but I can remember hearing cheers from neighbours before I'd seen a penalty being kicked when I was watching on Virgin and they had an aerial. I'd prefer not hearing everything 30 seconds before I see it. A few seconds is OK.

I'll have my Sky dish still and as I heard that should still give me HD BBC and ITV that's probably what I'll use. The aerial is more of a backup plan. I see something, I start trying to use it, I keep going for several hours even after I realise it's mostly pointless. You know how it is.

It's probably a minute or so. It's not the neighbours that are my problem, it's the messages on my phone. Pretty much have to turn it to silent until HT!
  • Deleted user 22 February 2018 12:33:35
I'd not thought of that. Good point. Texts and even going online can be a problem if you want to see it 'live'.

When things like satellite, HD and streaming were introduced I started wondering how long a delay something could have before I'd decide it wasn't live. A few seconds is acceptable. A few hours would be too much. Where's the crossover point?

    I'm free! I'm finally free!

I tried my NowTV app on my TV and I think I should buy a NowTV stick.

If anyone is after a decent deal on Sky sports, 9 months for £150:

I shall probably be partaking towards the end of the month...

Wow - just as the SuperRugby season is getting under way. Think I might grab that. Once I buy, can I cancel straight away to prevent auto switching to monthly payments at the end of the offer period?

I have been with Sky 7 years, I pay £130 a month. My broadband currently been down for 8 days and no sign of a fix. £40 a month for broadband that doesnt work. Got Relish last night, its 30% faster than Sky Fibre. If its stable, Sky can stick their services up their ass.
