The entertainment world has lost one of its greats, at 93. I'm amazed at how ridiculously prolific the guy was - almost 200 films, not counting everything else he did for TV and stage. And he was still active pretty much right up until his passing.

    RIP

RIP. One of the great entertainers.
Agreed. He was brilliant in The Wrestler.

Was he ever in anything good? The only films I recognise from his filmography are Babe: Pig in the City and Night at the Museum, neither of which I saw.

I guess he must have been in some good stuff, I can't imagine they would herald someone as 'one of the greats' based on quantity over quality...

Infamous for his role in Breakfast At Tiffany's where he played Holly's Japanese neighbour... Saw him in The Bridges at Toko-Ri recently, but it was a typical bit part role. As you say, quantity over quality.

He was married to wife 8 for longer than the other 7 combined apparently.
Media is saying a 90 year showbiz career, that'll take some topping.

He was in the Oscar-winning film, "The Muppets" alongside Alan Arkin and Chris Cooper.

I never knew they made a Lady & the tramp 2....

Actually, as a slight redemption, he was also in the awesome Erik the Viking.

Well, give that he died at 93, there's a chance that a lot of his great movies were made before the 1990s.

Saw him in panto a few years back believe it or not. Bit of a shambles but he knew it and was great fun regardless (like your average panto then really) :-)

Brilliantly this morning on BBC Breakfast the best celeb they could get to talk about him was Les Dennis who did a panto with him once. :D

As said above most of his films were in the 30s and 40s. So there are very few of his films I have seen.

Looks like he was the original Leonardo Di Caprio as he got a junior Oscar (based on potential) and a lifetime achievement Oscar (based on overall high quality) but never actually won one for a film.

I imagine Les Dennis maintains a list with every connection to fame he has. Within seconds of hearing the news, he'd have been on the phone to his agent. "I met Mickey Rooney, get me on the TV".

    RIP

He was one of the biggest Hollywood names in pre-war period. The series of 13 Andy Hardy films made him a huge star - alongside the numerous musicals he made with Judy Garland.

In the 70s/80s when I was a kid his early movies would be on TV a lot during the daytime.

He was a bit weird looking in Iron Man 2 but didn't look 90 years old.
