Bizarre. I've just read Sheepfish's comments on my short story. I knocked it out in about 20 minutes on a coffee break yesterday, and basically had one idea (The mother's coming over), and just padded the rest out. It's the first time I've had anybody critique anything I've written since I left school 20 years ago, and suddeny I get incredibly defensive! I'm thinking 'hang on - I can do better. Just let me rewrite it a bit!' /hopes he scrapes through to next round /must try harder Edited by boo at 09:23:18 03-03-2005 |

As for what my novel's about, here's the high-concept two line pitch that interested my agent: "Sebastian Leonard wakes to discover that he has only eight hours to live. If he saves somebody's life, he gets another eight hours added to his clock. But if he kills somebody, he gets twenty four..."
Bloody brilliant idea! Good luck with it. How you dealing with it? Serious consideration of ethical dilemma and how to spend your last hours on earth or (extremenly) black comedy? -

My job is pretty much developing scripts for TV/Film, developing concepts for TV (Live action/animation), and so writing a book just doesn't interest me these days. I love working with writers, but find the process of writing to be too time consuming. My mind works too fast, and I like to be able to work on a few different themes/genres at the same time. I have recently finished a treatment for a film that is aiming for production in September/December in Montreal, and that was about 7,000 words for a 90-min film. I think that's my limit as far as being able to concentrate. I think one day it would be fun to expand on some of the concepts that I write for TV, but maybe when I can afford a house by a river with a little shed at the bottom of the garden that I can lock myself away in.

Do you develop the ideas yourself, or are you taking on specific "jobs" from other people to be fleshed out into series? Are you finding TV execs less willing to take any kind of risk these days?
I ask these questions because I've been becoming more and more frustrated by British telly the more I write, as IMO the best of American telly (I know much of it is tripe, I'm talking about the cream of the crop here) is so far superior to our own in terms of organisation, quality and sheer quantity of the product, it's getting embarrassing.
The majority of the ideas come from in house, which means that it is a three way creative process. There are 2 execs and myself (creative producer). The last job I did was in fact an idea brought to us, which was going in the wrong direction completely, and so my job was to re-focus and re-structure the concept/story so that it would appeal. We are actually a co-production on that movie, but we didn't create the idea (though to be honest, what I wrote was so different to the original we might as well have!). I am also developing a computer game for PS2 and PSP for a Jan 2007 launch, doing the script work/story work on that. It is the most exciting project I have ever had to work on as I believe that there is a huge amount of work to be done to bring gaming stories up to the standard they deserve (I'm talking in general terms, there are some fantastic examples of good game story telling). It is a completely different discipline, in that you aren't controlling the story as such, but creating the environment and trying to leave a lot of the story up to the player to shape and make their own. It is very difficult.
I agree about the lack of quality British telly, but I also point out that the only US telly we really see over here is the good stuff. There is an awful lot of crap that gets made over there, trust me. And we never get to see it. It is a tough time in TV industry right now. very hard to get commissions from broadcasters. I work mainly in Children's TV, that is my background. And it is really tough to get things made. In the last 2 years I would say that I have written and developed about 9 concepts, most of them including script, bible and visuals. Out of those 9, 1 is going into production in Jan 2007, and another is potentially going into further development... Thats 2 years work for 1 maybe 2 shows on air. As I said it is tough... But the rewards are amazing, especially on Children's TV (merchandise etc.).
As soon as I am further down the line with the latest show, I'll tell you guys about it, but I am not really at a stage where I can begin to start leaking material. You all will be the first to know!
