I do alot of driving in my job, and I've noticed whilst driving around white squares in the middle of the road. Its right in the middle of the lane about 30cm square.
I've had a crazy idea that it might be for orbitting satellites to monitor traffic, but I think thats just plain crazy!!

Who knows then? and are they nationwide?

Is it not a sprayed marker to show someone where to dig in the near future in order to find a particular pipe/cable/body?

These arn't distance markings, as they're all on their own (poor things). They also look like they're painted with the same stuff that they use for road markings, not the spray stuff they use for future road works.

It's a police thing. You'll notice another set some distance down the road. It means they can time the car over a set distance and work out your average MPH quickly.

    actually i think it depends.

Some of them are a set distance apart, and are indeed used to help assist speed checks. Some of them on the other hand are utilised by the police helicopter pilots to warn of oncoming hazards, like a bridge for example.

It means they can use a camera from the side of the road, which tracks via the markings.
