This is so much better than I expected. Really benefits from a story.

Only looked into it, but what's wrong with it?

Anyway, 27 quid is entirely justfied for the sandbox mode alone. This is a deep, well thought out and polished game.

Hoping the story mode is going to open up soon. At the moment it's quite linear, yet they really don;t explain everything. For example the crafting section being in the journal now.

I'd also say that the script is wank so far.

I've been playing a two hour trial mode on the XBone and quite enjoying it. Had a quick blast on story mode but was riveted in the sandbox mode. When it gets dark it's terrifying! Great use of sound too.
Not sure if I'm going to part with £30 yet as August is a busy month but definitely on my list.

I'm more worried about cougars. (See Match.com thread ;)

If anyone does have this on PS4, expect bugs. Huge dirty cunt bugs that wipes save files when you try to go through a door (on survival mode). 😫😫😫 hours and hours lost 😩

Got this on the Steam sale for £7. Weird game...very atmospheric and pretty unforgiving. Playing through the story mode first which is engaging. Wolves are horrible btw.

Well it's just a glorified tutorial to the sandbox. However I'm engaged with it.

The sandbox is king on this. Nothing beats being in the pitch black in the middle of a blizzard, almost dead, stumbling on a nice big farmhouse which inevitably saved your life 😊

    Necrobump.

I started playing this again. Last I played was before the story mode was implemented and there was like 3 maps. Damn I'm hooked again.

The story mode is pants though. Worst writing in recent memory. :D
"Oh, your friend is lost and possibly hurt? Well, I'm a mysterious blind old woman so I'm sure to know which way she went. Now you just need to run errands for me a couple of days and I'll tell you what I know..."

Got this yesterday (thanks to Roguey's Steam freebie thread!) and my word I got instantly addicted. Played last night for a solid 5 hours, having jumped straight into sandbox mode.

Really like the graphical style and sound design, sunrises and -sets are stunning, and it getting dark with wolves howling in the distance is truly terrifying. Despite the comic like graphics you really feel like you're on your own in a hostile and harsh environment.

No tutorial so you have to figure things out on your own, which is how you learn surviving (worst case the hard way via permadeath). It's got that "play for another hour to survive another day or two and see what's behind the next hill" feel to it.

Very refreshing especially compared to all the other icon vomit infested open worlders out there that hand hold you too much these days. Only criticism would be over reliance on progress bars but you get used to it.

Game is 70% off (but not for much longer I think) on Steam and well worth the price.

PS - impossible to find this thread without external google search, sort it out EG

The story mode is a long tutorial but I think you did the right thing jumping into the sandbox straight away!

I love camping outdoors when there's a blizzard going and wolves howling in the distance. It's also great to explore the areas to find all the hidden huts and landmarks. Dunno why it is but it feels like a proper adventure when you can't just follow waypoints to a blip on the map.

Yeah the atmosphere is great. My third attempt ended in death after about 2 weeks of survival.

Started in the mountain village with plenty of resources, but also regular visits from wolves. I stayed there too long just using existing resources, then my tools (like sewing kit) broke, couldn't stay out too long to harvest areas further afield without getting too cold due to worn clothes, so got desperate for food and tried to fight wolves without weapons, which just about worked before, in order to get some meat. Didn't work out as I died from blood loss and shock.

Lessons were learned for the next run, which I started in coastal highway. Completely different vibe. The emergent gameplay in this beats some other games story mode, great stuff.

The areas in the game feel totally different. The railway bog is nails hard, and conversely if you get lucky with guts early on you can live pretty much indefinitely at the frozen lake map. Just hunting rabbits and fishing...
  • Deleted user 10 April 2018 18:13:51
Yep my primary goal now is to create a bow. Having to cure guts and finding the ingredients to begin with is another matter though...

I think this will keep me going for a while anyways, and there's still story mode although I'm not really that fussed about that now. Actually prefer games that aren't story driven as I quite enjoy setting my own goals (if the game lets me ofc).

I had tremendous trouble finding the right sapling for the bow. Then when I had a rifle and all the ammo I needed I found it in one map. Sod's law, I suppose.
