New HBO show. Based on the book by Tom Perrotta, the series follows what happens after 2% of the population vanishes without explanation. Trailers contain spoilers and NSFW

It's just such a ridiculous plot that I'm going to find it impossible to get in to it. Reminds me of Flashforward in that respect.

Filled their shagging quota and then some.

    The fan favorite, Damon Lindelof.

Fucking love the James Blake song.

Looks ok. Just hope it actually has a proper pre-written determined arc, and isn't just a nice concept that then gets made up as they go along.

I've watched the first 2 episodes.

It's going to be another Flash Forward / Under the Dome borefest.

I hope it isn't, but sadly I think it'll end up that way and get canned after 10 episodes.

It's neither of those things as the big mystery will never be answered, so it's much more of a character study than either of those shows.

I don't think it'll get canned either as HBO generally back their shows for at least two seasons.

I dunno, the jury's still out for me, I enjoyed the first two episodes and apparently it get much better after them.

Isn't that how most TV works (and is why I hate most TV)?

The first season should follow the book. But there is only really enough story there for one ten episode season.
The rest will have to be made up.

Is that what kids do at parties now, bloody hell.

I'm more annoyed by the don't speak people than intrigued and his hair is weird. Wouldn't dogs run away after gun shots.

Reviewers were right about the new episode, I thought it was fantastic. Eccleston was brilliant throughout.
The trailer for the rest of the season looked promising too.

The people in white don't half fuck me off. They're definitely trying my patience and not in the way the makers probably hope they are but in the way that I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep watching.

It just feels like it's being unnecessarily vague about their purpose and beliefs, which I know is what they're doing to the other characters too but it doesn't ring true so they'd better have a really, really strong explanation not just for their existence but for why they seem to exist purely to annoy everyone.

Otherwise it's a case of it falling dangerously close to being weird / mysterious just for the sake of it which is a pet peeve of mine, not to mention lazy writing.

On a related note while I can live with the central mystery not being solved most of the side stuff- such as the goals of the people in white, had better be explained at some point.

Otherwise it's just pointless. I can see the purpose of the central mystery as being a big event to tie characters together, pull them apart and generally allow for a character study that wouldn't be possible in the world as it is, but the lesser mysteries aren't necessary for that, so there needs to be some answers imo.

All that said, I'm mostly enjoying it so far. Good acting, good writing barring my concerns above and I will probably stick with it, but it definitely feels like it could be something which I'll regret putting the time into depending on the directions it goes in.

Watched the first ep, the premise intrigued me so gave the book a read. Quite enjoyed it, a little too American suburban drama for my tastes though, and the Sudden Departure felt like a MacGuffin by the end. As Scurrminator says above, only really one seasons worth of material in the book.

I've zero faith in Lindelof doing anything other than pumping out several seasons of nothing but mysterious questions with very few answers (assuming it gets re upped), and I had quite enough of that with Lost thankyouverymuch. Think I'll skip this, which is a shame as I enjoyed the pilot.

I did the first three episodes and haven't gone back to it. I appreciate that it's well acted and there's some decent writing, but it's just so fucking bleak and depressing. I heard about the episode with 'the rocks' and thought "Naaa, I can't be arsed with that".
After a shitty day in work its not exactly the type of show I can wind down and relax with.
I might go back to it when the season's over, if it ends with positive reviews.

I've been enjoying it, in an odd kind of way. Everything I've heard, about the book and purportedly about the show, is that the Event is never explained; there have been hints of other things going on, of a supernatural bent, but whether this is going to actually ever give some clue about what happened, or is just some side-/after-effect, I have no idea.

It has been picked up for a second series, however, which means they're probably going to take it beyond what is in the book.

Annoyingly I'm enjoying this, even though I should know better after Lost.

The single character episodes are the best.
