My own biggest peeve is how it mixes files and folders together when you have things sorted by name!

Is that a problem with the OS, or just something you dont like? I personally would find it odd if it did not sort files and folders this way.

I accept that isn't a bug like all the other problems mentioned. However, I can assure you that I'm not alone in not liking it this way. I think it should be something you can control in preferences.

Explorer has its problems too. Try sticking a CD into your machine and watch the WHOLE thing size up while it mounts it. It's just that for once, MS has something that works more intuitively and reliably that Apple equivalent.

What locks up? Just tried it myself, explorer did not lock up and nor did the PC.

Oh and try adding a file to a folder on a network while you are viewing it with Finder. Start timing. See how long it takes for it to show up. You can go for a cup of tea if you want. And there isn’t even a kludge like pressing F5 in windows. You just have to sit there and wait.

Just did and the folder appeared instantly, then again all our servers are solaris it could be a mac-windows problem.

    Yes!
I knew I wasn't the only person on the planet who liked Dosshell! I remember it was dumped from DOS 6.2, could never understand why.

    Rather entertaining thread.

One of the peeps in work has a g4 she uses for mail etc.
she has her drive shared out so we can get at ahem media lets say.
It's very funny watching her go into a flap when someone decides to open two explorer windows and copy stuff from her Mac. It brings it to it's knees. Reboot required! lol
ye woul have to be there I guess

    Errr

I'd never used a mac or OSX until last year... when Apple very kindly leant* me a dual G5, with 2.5 gigs of RAM (!!!)... and a *gorgeous* 23" cinema display. I absolutely love it! I'm not the greatest fan of Finder, and having a big display makes me not like having the menu stuck up at the top, instead of on windows where it belongs.... but blimey it's a nice operating system. And anything that's missing (not a big fan of XCode f'instance), well I can just use all my old UNIX stuff.

I've since convinced my boss to get my a iBook for working at home. I just love it as well, even though it's the cheapest available... mainly because it has 6.5 hours of battery life! My old Vaio did well to make 1.5, even from new!

The only way that windows beats a mac for me at least, is with games. Frankly though, I'd rather play games on a console. I'm a big big convert.

*I think the idea is we migrate to OSX or something, but there were no conditions. And I still have it ;-D

It's when a Dual 2.5 gig G5 tower with 20" display gets delivered to work and the Boss has to actually drag you away you know you're beyond hope.

Actually....taking the side pan off to look inside and showing the PC 2nd line guys the pure brilliance of the innards...oh dear.

    /hangs head in shame

Still, I managed to nab a copy of Office 2K4 so that's nice. I also got to setup the screen cos the bloke couldn't figure out the leads. Der.

Oh god. The first week I had it I kept taking the side off to show everyone how pretty the insides were. And I stuck the stickers on my officemate's computer to annoy him. I'm LOST! ;-)

Doubtful, but the start of this thread does remind me why I started to dislike Macs.

Drag & drop disc ejection: surely one of the worst ideas the company has ever had.

I'm not having a go, I just want to know why it is a bad idea...

I have always used Mac's so I take it that disk ejecting is better on PC's?

Eject button works for me. Ahuahua.

Aye? On an old Mac that didn't have one? Curious.

I just hated that they did it purely to be different. Bloody annoying when an old OS would get fritzy and refuse to give you your disc back, or make you wait ten seconds or so while it weighed up the pros and cons of returning the disc. Extra hassle for the sole reason of making a statement of individuality.

They got the idea eventualy and stuck a manual eject button on. They've even gone so far now as to introduce a multi-button mouse :)

I hated the way that Macs used to let you have a floppy disk by pressing eject. And then the image would stay on the desktop, so you'd drag it to the bin and then it'd ask for the disk back.

But that was about 15 years ago.

You'd be surprised at the level people are willing to hold a grudge.
