Why not take an actual course? I speak a couple of languages and I find it essential to actually speak with other students or a teacher to really get going, instead of trying solo. -

Spooky...
Likewise though, pointers would be nice...

Registered 17 years agoProbably your best bet is to contact your local college, there are loads of evening courses. My dad goes to a weekly french class. Or start going out with a french person. You could try those language CD/book things, my missus has the italian one but to be honest it hasn't really worked... you need to be pretty dedicated to get anything from those. I listened to lots of french music and radio while revising for my A level -

I tried a fairly poor learning CD for Spanish and I just couldn't apply myself very well to that. A course is probably the way to go, however I was just looking for osmething speculative, I don't exactly want to tie myself down to a course. I'd also like something I could do with my girlfriend.

Registered 19 years agoI have a theory that us Brits aren't very good at learning foreign languages because we aren't taught our own very well.
At least, when I was learning German I found my own lack of knowledge of English grammar a hinderance. -

Registered 17 years agoI speak 4 langauges and although I learnt the grammar and vocab in school/college, it doesn't actually start coming together until you get an opportunity to speak with native speakers.
Of course, that's not as easy to arrange usually.
So your second best bet is probably a decent language course. Interaction and a chance to actually speak it is quite essential.
Getting a book with a few grammar lessons and a few tapes to trawl through on your own is probably the best way to comletely kill your interest in the language within a week or two, so i'd avoid them.
Best luck and enjoy, it's very rewarding, mastering a new tongue.

My girlfriend is pretty well versed in French but just needs to practice her skills a bit, since I have none at all then eventually I could practice with her.
