    Rather than infinitely bumping the various threads - headphones, lossless music, DACs, amps, oooooh look at the new NAIM shizzle etc - I thought I'd start this for us to discuss our superlative hearing ability and appreciation for the quality of audio above musical content. We can also do some fart smelling and of course willy comparisons.

    Who's in?

    Paging ecosse to the thread, ecosse to the thread. Your ability to listen to MOR tedium on a 5k soundsystem is required in operating room 3.

    It reminds me of that one hit wonder by those gay guys that I am, ironically, unable to recall in any way, shape or form.

    It's worth a lot more than a piddling 5K but I'm here.

    Hot topic of the day - "Audiophile quality USB cables".

    It is really "just data"? Will a 2 cable do? Can a USB cable really justify costing nearly 900?

    Its probably 10+ years old.

    We recently got new, somewhat thicker, curtains. They had a bigger impact on the sound quality in the living room than anything before, inlcuding buying entirely new loudspeakers that cost about 5 times as much as the old ones.

    The curtains were 40 Eur.

    I can believe that, a shame so many people don't put more effort into the listening environment.
    Going the whole hog is clearly not practical but placement opf furniture and soft furnishings make a huge difference, as can speaker placement.

    This is why I'm a headphones guy. At least that way you're limiting the anal detail fretting about a limited number of components.

    Varying quality USB cables do show a difference in transfer rates, so I cant see why it wouldnt make a *slight* difference when transferring music information but not 900 quids worth of difference since the work is all being done by the buffer in the encoder before reproduction.

    TLDR: no

    How many people have their speakers set to the sweet spot and just where is that sweet spot?

    I used to buy cables for a brief while, usually HDMIs and when they tried to push 100+ versions I would challenge them to demonstrate any perceptible difference from a 10 cable, none of them ever succeeded.

    @gang_of_bitches Ah, that's just your ears not being tuned to the frequency of sucker.

    Which is fine and i dont disagree with you but what I am saying is that USB cables variable quality can quantifiably affect transfer rates which could feasibly have a knock on effect with the output of a decoder.
  • Deleted user 10 June 2014 15:08:47
    @gang_of_bitches

    There is a slight difference to HDMI in that you might be using a USB to power your DAC, as well as pass audio data to it, in which case a cheapo cable might give not give you a nice clean low impedance power supply.

    There's also I believe an issue with clock speeds but that won't matter if your DAC regulates all that, which a decent one will.

    900 is a joke. A 40 cable or so might be worth having if you're the type to spend thousands on your other components.

    How regularly do you clean your ears to make sure no build up of wax is impeding your listening pleasure?
    And do you keep your ear hair neatly trimmed at all times?

    @kalel

    Yup, you're completely right, I get that there's a difference. I think I'm just battling the devils inside that want all this shiny expensive stuff and so kick pretty hard in the opposite direction.

    It does annoy the hell out of me (for no very good reason) though that there are these people trying to push emperor's new coat type components. But I guess as long as there are people who want to boast that they have the world's most expensive interconnects or whatever there'll be companies happy to humour them.

    Just to be clear I fucking love hi-fi and if my ears weren't shot and I didn't have other expensive hobbies I'd still be all over it.

    Buena Vista Social Club is a very common audiophile reference source.

    There's definitely a slight misunderstanding somewhere in his post, but I get roughly what he means.

    I have. It's in the middle of the couch. And the floorstanders are just 2m away from head, so it's a little couch+2 speakers triangle in the middle of the living-room.

    Yeah, I overdid it a bit there. Reference quality albums and the like on CD.

    Much appreciated.
