Sony have filed a trademark for "Hi-Res Audio" for consoles and handhelds.. Intriguing.

I've sent my main headphones off to be customised, and am now without them for a month. In the meantime I'm absolutely disgusted with my second best pair of headphones, and am hovering over the 'buy' button on some nice IEMs. I feel like I can make use of them even once I get my main headphones back, but realistically I really really shouldn't be buying these.

    Just sharing really.

What customisation are you getting done?

I'm getting them covered in chrome with blue LEDs round the rim of each can (plus my name carved out the cups with an LED backlight, also blue), and a matching blue coiled telephone chord style cable.

    I'm not really being serious.

I'm having angled pads put on to improve the seal, replacing my cups with wood ones, and the cable replaced with copper.

To take the thread slightly in another direction, what does everyone use on the move?

I currently just use my Nexus4 as a source, using a FiiO E07k as an amp, normally with a pair of Sennheiser Amperiors. I am getting fed up with the limited storage on the phone though. I would also like to try and avoid having to take the FiiO out with me all the time, especially as it's not being used as a DAC.

I am currently deliberating a HTC One M8 (or waiting for the E8). I tried a mates and it was far better than the N4 unamped. I didn't do extensive testing but it sounded very good to me, certainly much more capable at driving the headphones well. SD storage can take it to 128GB which is a major plus.

I had thought of a dedicated DAP, but I use Spotify on the go as well as my own files.

It got me thinking that potentially a iPod Touch may be a good idea. 64GB should be enough storage (though 128 would be better), and I could use my N4 as a hotspot to use Spotify on it. They are thin enough so I could carry it with my phone at the same time. Upside is I would get an iOS device (my last was a 3GS), downside is I detest iTunes

Anyone got experience with the iPod Touch and can constructively comment on it's sound quality, and volume, compared to a lower range headphone amp with Android as source?

I've basically given up on audiophiling-on-the-move. I can't be arsed with it. I used to carry around a Cowon and a FiiO with a good set of IEMs but it wasn't worth the bother. Now I just use an iphone and a half decent set-of on ears for the most noise isolation I can get. The sq and volume are both adequate imo, but it's impossible to be say what you would consider adequate.

Getting an ipod touch to effectively act as a storage expansion to your N4 seems a bit backwards to me though. I'd be inclined just to get a new phone - an E8 or an iphone or whatever - and solve it all in one solution.

Yeah, I'm no audiophile but I used to carry around a phone and an iPod touch. Best thing I ever did was get rid of the iPod, it's small but you'd be surprised at how much faff it is to carry around two devices. Convergence is the way forward!

My thinking on the iPod touch was not just for the storage, but also wondering if it would compare to (or exceed) the current combo of the Nexus with FiiO. Of course I would still be carrying two devices but the iPod is thinner than the FiiO.

My current setup is adequate sound quality wise, but not always convenient. The Nexus on it's own simply doesn't have the power to drive the Amperiors. It can get loud enough (just) but has very poor bass and no real energy to the sound at all. If I use EQ then the sound improves but the volume drops too low.

I know the FiiO is capable of better sound when used as a DAC (I use it on my laptop) but the boost to the headphones in power is easily detectable.

I spend 9 hours on trains each week (I go to London, from Northumberland, and back once a week) and it's fine having both in that situation, but walking around it can become a faff.

The M8 (or E8 if it hurries up) does look like the ideal solution really.

I use a Cowon J3 and sometimes just my Galaxy Nexus. Have a pair of Phonak PFE in-ears that I use with them.
  • Deleted user 8 July 2014 14:13:33
I thought the whole point of amperiors was that they didn't need an amp, hence the name.

    What's the impedance on them?

The are 18ohm, so easy to drive, but the Nexus 4 has a very low volume output. Without any EQ it can drive them just about to the volume I like, but with a thin sound with no bass and no real impact.

I just use a nexus 4 and the headphones that came with it. I'm only on the train for 2 x 20 minutes each day so can't be arsed with faffing.

And in other news I've moved house and I can't find room for my decks never mind the surround av :(

Determined to make the best of it though

Could anyone recommend a 4/5 hundred quid amp to drive a pair of Tannoy DC6s?
  • Deleted user 8 July 2014 18:48:22
What kind of sound do you like?

Note - I'm going home now but let's spend all day tomorrow talking about this :)

This group needs a moniker. Something easy to remember, snappy, but descriptive. A banner underneath which you could all lobby for greater rights, and perhaps, eventually, general acceptance that your interests are not unnatural and certainly shouldn't be illegal.

    Audiophile Information Exchange?

I'd consider 2nd hand or ex-demo, maybe something like this MUSICAL FIDELITY M3I

Picked up a pair of Shure 1540 closed back headphones and I've been seriously impressed at how capable they are with games, movies and music. Warm but controlled, detailed and surprisingly airy for closed back and they insulate really well which means high volume listening doesn't wake my son up.

Running them off my old Astro headphone amp at the moment so not ideal, but frankly they're incredible regardless. For a set of cans which aim for reference but with actual character they're teh awesomes.

Recommendations for headphone amps welcome by the way. But if any of them include valves I'll slap you square in the face! Thanks!

Edit: How rude of me - link: Linky

    @kalel I don't know if I can define the sound I like as such. Here's a bit more detail on the set up though;

I listen to anything from Pink Floyd to Benga.

Source of music is a 70/30% split between iTunes directly from my iMac to amp and turntable(s) straight to the amp.

Medium/large room with pretty high ceiling.

Speakers either side of the turntables at ear height.

I had a very budget set up before this speaker upgrade, so they're currently being driven by a Cambridge Audio AM5. They sound good to be fair, but the plan is to buy a tastier amp and then move the AM5 amp and the old speakers into the lounge for Sky and Netflix etc.

I'm not too fussed about digital inputs, but they'd be welcome. I know you can always add a £100 to a budget with this kind of thing and justify it, but ideally 500 is my maximum spend. Having said that I'd be willing to live like a hermit for 3 months to double that if these speakers justify an incredible amp.

@Armoured_Bear Cheers for the link. 2nd hand/ex demo is an option, for sure.

    What's wrong with valve amps??

Personally I love the valve sound, plus you get to do the whole valve rolling thing which is all kinds of fun.

greg misread your post last night as I was dashing out the door and thought you wanted a headphone amp. I'm not really your guy I'm afraid.

Bob, do you want an amp or an amp/dac combi? And do you want a desktop or a portable?

@Armoured_Bear West Yorkshire. I usually shop online or at Richer Sounds in Leeds for this kinda stuff.

Will probably end up asking their advice but didn't wanna go in too blind.
  • Deleted user 9 July 2014 11:42:28
I'm not mad about Richer Sounds. They've never really struck me as the most honest organisation. I've read countless stories about empty offers just to get people in store, and then salesmen saying anything to push whatever product they've got stacked to the ceiling out back (99% of the time something Cambridge which they own).

Without being too wanky I think they're great for the slightly less discerning consumer who just wants some decent hi-fi for a good price. You can't go wrong there with that attitude. If you want something specific or want impartial advice then you might be barking up the wrong tree.

I think that's true of most salesman, especially in the world of hi-fi, though granted most don't own a brand themselves too.

I have always found them very accommodating. Last time I went in to RS it was for some speakers for my office. Ended up getting one of my shortlist of three (Monitor Audio Bronze BX2s) after demoing several pairs for over an hour. They recommended a few pairs to try in my price range which I demoed but they never pushed them hard. Their customer services should anything go wrong (or you change your mind once home) is very good too.

Of course each store will be different to an extent, but I have had the same experience whether in the Newcastle store or several of the London ones.

Saying that, I never go into a hi-fi or AV purchase without doing a ridiculous amount of research online first to make a shortlist.
