Sounds a bit iffy... Do you have access to a Windows 7 machine you can test it on? Have you checked for any known issues with that specific model of external drive? I've had absolutely no issues with any of my external storage on 2x laptops and 2x PCs. Having said that, they've all had clean installs done at some point over the past year. /edit Just saw your other post... Very weird! Edited by dfunked at 09:48:50 14-08-2016 |

But then it loses it exactly after 4 minutes and 37 seconds. Done it twice now at the same time of being connected. Just disappears from the system and you have to re-insert it.
Just tried it on the next door neighbours Win 7 laptop. Works fine. No problems.
I know the experience is different for many different people, but for me this is by far the worst operating system I've ever had for functionality that I need it to do.
The best one thus far has been my printer, which still works fine under Win 7, only printing in colour. It refuses to print in black and white. Requesting black comes out as three lines of red, blue and yellow, all about 2mms away from each other. New driver installed. Still does it. -

Registered 18 years agoSo, how do you stop Windows 10 installing random apps without your permission. I thought it was just a clean install thing but a few weeks later, a bunch of apps started installing. No thanks Microsoft. -

Registered 12 years agoMy tablet went all pink and the retailer couldn't repair or replace it, so I ended up with a credit note and the only thing that fell within my price range was a crappy Dell Inspiron netbook thing.
I haven't owned a Windows computer since Windows 7, and I have no idea with where to begin when it comes to de-bloating Windows 10 and improving the computer's meagre performance, never mind security and all that jazz. Can some point me towards a guide? I have Googled it, but to no avail.
Is Gizmo's Freeware still a reliable source for the best freeware?

Yeah? Is Windows 10 pretty 'good' then? Or is a just a case of having to grin and bear it?
Nothing you can do, nor need to do. -

10 is pretty damn good at running on weak hardware imo.
It runs perfectly well on tablets with 1GB memory, anyway... -

You can also go into power settings and check the usb power settings. There may be some option to power down when not in use etc that might be the problem. Or go into the bios and disable usb 3 (not a great solution but seems to help some people).

Aside from the HDD probably needs USB 2 and you've plugged it into a USB 1 socket.
Un fucking believeable.
Changed USB cable, it works. Use the same USB cable that wasn't working with the HDD with another three devices, they work fine. Plug it back into HDD (and this is the cable it was supplied with and always worked with), it doesn't.
Makes. No. Fucking. Sense.
And back up any important stuff. Disks can and do fail. Even back up back ups for the most important stuff. -

Registered 9 years agoHi all,
Been having issues with browsing the internet and watching videos on my laptop. GPU driver was updated yesterday (when I was troubleshooting all this). Videos screen tearing, dropping frames, and the browsing experience being interrupted by graphical glitches.
Asus UX501VW-DS71T.
Chrome, Hardware accel off: Heavy frame drops during videos, tears when scrolling.
Hardware accel on: still tearing, less frame drops in videos but still noticeable (happens once every second, at an even interval, generally).
In both cases, videos often freeze when fullscreening in the first ten or so seconds. The video freezes, the keys are unresponsive for about 18 seconds, then it fast-forwards to the current position in the video, unless I tried to pause it during that time frame, in which case it pauses.
Firefox: Hardware accel seems to make no difference. Heavy screen tearing when scrolling down a page. Videos drop frames like mad.
I've messed around with smooth scrolling, but it's obvious the issue runs deeper than that. Also tried using NVIDIA control panel, enabling vsync, and hardware acceleration, then selecting "High Performance NVIDIA processor". No changes.
Tried using Edge, zero tearing or video freezes/frame drops. Problem is, it tends to run on the slower side, and there are a few glitches that crop up every now and then. An SFC scan revealed nothing, as well...
A reinstall of Windows wouldn't be preferable, but if necessary, I can put up with it until I have the time (likely four months). Obviously tried reinstalling Chrome. Oh, and games run fine.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated! I miss Chrome. -

Registered 16 years agoDoes anyone know of any phone apps which would let me control my PC from the phone?
I don't mean so much using a streamer (I have splashtop) but more, being able to
1) Wake the PC from sleep
2) start apps using shortcut buttons like steam big screen mode, or kodi
3) send e.g. Alt-F4 commands and click the odd mouse button -

Registered 16 years agoDon't Google have an app that allows this sort of thing? Google Remote Desktop, I think it's called. Not sure if it ticks all of those boxes mind, I haven't actually used it since installing it.
Plus you might be on iPhone. -

Chrome Remote Desktop is pretty good if you want your computer's screen on your device - I'd go for that or something like Unified Remote for a slicker / simpler experience. -

Registered 9 years ago@Dirtbox It didn't work.
Booted into safe mode, used DDU to clean off drivers, installed a driver directly from NVIDIA after the restart.
Interesting data to note: In Chrome, frame drops are less frequent when playing back video, but are still present. Maybe one every three seconds, however tearing is still present in these instances. Small but noticeable. Hardware accel causes the 1080p60 video to run much smoother (resulting in the scenario above). No acceleration is utterly trash.
Stats for Nerds in Firefox, however, reports no frame drops, but is obviously running at around 30-40 FPS and tearing.

Hmmmm actually Splashtop seems to have a different app for this other than the usual remote desktop type streamer.
Splashtop.
Google has deprecated all its apps, dunno what the deal is with their remote desktop. They might bake it into chrome like they did with Cast.
Will give it a go. -

I've used PC Remote pretty successfully. You install a server component on your PC and the client on your phone. Was just for Windows Phone, but I see an Android version is now available.

Registered 12 years agoOnly thing that bothers me is win 10 randomly goes DING and says a usb device has been disconnected. Everything that is connected works just fine though. Not really a problem but just something strange. -
Didn't work for me on a VM the other day... Had to use a key to activate that.
If you've previously activated Windows 10 then you don't need a key to activate a fresh install on the same machine. Probably where the confusion is coming from.

Registered 12 years agoThe question is, when is windows going to think you've got a different pc? New cpu or motherboard? New HDD? -
It's usually just the motherboard that pushes it over the edge... Even then a 5 minute call to the automated activation line should get it activated again. -
