| Some one with more knowledge will help, but I'd guess you've accidentally associated .exe files with Excel. |

You'll have to dumb that down for me just a bit please.
Can you open the .out with notepad and paste the contents with the /code modifier? It's a powershell script. -

Registered 19 years agoNever mind, just paste the contents if possible. If it's a huge page of gibberish don't bother. -

Registered 19 years agoCHPxtreme is probably right though. You'll have to disassociate the EXEs with Settings > Apps > Default apps, then Choose apps by file type at the bottom.

Registered 14 years agoAh, see what you mean and I can't post that - it's bank transaction info.
It's three lines of comma separated info. First line begins 01, second line begins 02 and last line begins 99. -

Registered 19 years agoOh, then never mind. Do what I said on the post just above yours. -

Registered 14 years agoRight, .exe isn't in the list of file types unfortunately. -

Registered 19 years agoLook at that list and see what is defaulted to excel and reset it to the default. -

Registered 15 years agoWhat about right clicking on the OUT file again, selecting Open With and choose default program again? And choosing the right one this time

Registered 14 years agoThanks for all the help folks but I'm giving up and leaving it to the tech support crowd at work.
And I DID try that mrpon, but I couldn't find the right excel file to use

Registered 15 years agoMine is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE
The Office15 bit could be different on yours.
Good luck. -

Registered 7 years agoFollowing some Googling, if you're comfortable editing the registry, look for
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\
For me, OpenwithList in that 'folder' has the entry:
Name: (default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: (Value not set)
OpenwithProgIDs has an additional entry:
Name: exefile Type: REG_NONE Data: zero-length binary value
If you have other values in either of these, that might point to the problem. -

Registered 14 years ago@CHPxtreme Thanks for this.
I can't actually open the registry editor though.
Setting up a new profile might be the most straight forward way of getting past this. -

Registered 5 years agoSame advice as last time, ctrl+shift+esc to open taskman, hold ctrl, click new task. You'll get a command prompt. Type "assoc .exe=exefile"
Or just leave it to your own IT bods if it's a work device.

To give you all some closure on this, tech support ended up just setting the laptop back to the previous restore point .gif)
I tried a few times to get task manager or command prompt working but it was the same story as everything else, started running office update instead.
Thanks for all the help though!
