Yeah, that stuck out to me, too. That playground (assuming it's the same one - surely it is) is definitely under the plate in the original, as that's where Cloud and Aeris stop on the way to Sector 7 slums when they see Tifa in Corneo's chocobo carriage.

In fact, the whole thing, I was thinking, "are these the slums? They look a bit bright and not at all shanty-town-ish."

    @Ror

They do look like an industrial hell-hole, though.

@Scimarad Sure does! I think it's good overall, just had me going 🤔 a few times.

Had the same reaction to you guys.

I think it's weird to see Midgar in daylight at all. I always kind of assumed the city was in more or less perpetual darkness due to the pollution of the land and air. The characters often remarked on how the city had no day or night.

Weird of them to make the first impression of Midgar out to be a bright and cleanish city. Perhaps they're hoping to contrast it with the slums a bit more later? To be fair, the few times you were above the plate in the original game it arguably didn't look different enough.

I'm hoping they hold back on their eagerness to mix things up.
The first part of the trailer was disappointing to show the outside world off. I remember that being a revelation on first playing that there was an outside! In day light too? Hmmm

I'd play the original again but its dated so poorly.

The opening shot of the skyscrapers actually made me think more of Lucis from FFXV Kingsglaive than Midgar, though obviously the more we saw, the more industrial and grimy it looked.

The surroundings of midgar where a barren browny grey in the original. So to see it as dessert isn't surprising. Probably because plants cannot grow due to the life stream being sucked up for the reactors.

It looked like there was plates but the playground didn't look part of the slums. Unless the plates are only on top of some of the slums in this...

Iím glad thereís daylight stuff in here. I donít think I want to play a 20-40 hour game (if it is that) in darkness. Be nice to come up for air for a while. If theyíre focusing most of the game in Midgar I think itís a choice Iím ok with them making

I didnít think the playground was under a plate, I seem to think the next sector over came down and you see it all pile up against massive doors/wall. I might be wrong there though

The playground was in the slums under sector 6 plate iirc. I always assumed there were gaps in the plate for various things though, like how the sunlight reaches the church for the flowers to grow

Ohh. Don't know whether to play this or just wait it out.

Remember the days when the demo for X came out with the FF6 PS1 port?

Same. No idea whether I want to play the demo or not. I'm 100% buying the game so it would be nothing but a spoiler.

Finished just now (took me a bit more than one hour, playing on Normal difficulty). The graphics are great, HDR works a lot better here than in FF15, and it runs pretty smooth too. In short, I love what they did with the graphics.

Still, the combat system was kinda tedious? I mean, the Scorpion Guard took forever to bring down. The stagger system is taken from FF13 but doesn't give you nearly as much of an advantage. The ATB system also feels pretty restrictive (your HP doesn't recover between battles, using items or spells requires an ATB bar, and you can't even use them outside of battle, so you must keep an eye on your health at all times). CHaracters you are not using will charge their own ATB bar pretty slowly, so you gotta go hands-on a lot.

I also got the feeling that most of it was unnecessary. Like, I know they obviously are going to stretch out those 5-6 hours into at least 25 hours, so each sequence needs to be a lot longer than in the original game. But so much of the mission felt like padding.

Anyway, not bad overall, but if the rest of the game is like the demo, it may be one to play on Easy mode for me, if only to make enemies die faster. Maybe if they improve the party AI... but anyway, I wonder what the rest of the game will be like.

Weird, the combat system has been almost universally praised by previewers. Yeah alright, I'm gonna have to try it out when I get home.

Are you sure that's right though? That you can't heal outside of battle?

I've watched the Scorpion Guard fight on YT before and thought to myself it seemed to be a bit of a damage sponge.

@Frogofdoom well, I must have missed that.

Still, wouldn't have helped all that much. Most of my time and HP in battle was spent against the Scorpion Guard anyway.

Yeah same as, it's a bit too long that fight.

But yeah you can press x to heal outside combat

Tempered my expectations sufficiently. It's good, really, it's very good, but not anything wildly new or exceptional. So the demo did a good job of letting me down nicely and I'm still getting it.

Think I'm going to wait until the whole thing is done. Don't trust that SE will finish it within the next decade.
