They're worse in this (disclaimer: I liked the system in XIII), because every boss makes you stagger them only to take away your damage phase and force a phase change instead.

@Ror Yeah, I noticed that. Yet another way of padding out the fight times.

Look, I'm not against long games. I've just finished a 111 hour Persona 5 Royal playthrough and I loved every minute. But I never felt that was pissing my time away like this is.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever played a game where I felt so strongly that my time was not being valued.

    @Ror You've not played Death Stranding I assume? :D

I don't mind the stagger system in principle as it adds a bit to a combat system than can otherwise often just be a case of spamming the attack button.
Unfortunately though it does have a habit of making far too many ordinary battles drag out way too long. It was one thing I didn't like about XIII (although I liked almost nothing about that game).

I also agree with @Rogueywon about the combat focused chapters that were just a screen or two of traversal in the original. I really don't think it needed two chapters just for the journey to the second reactor, for example - the second of them is pure padding.

@Dombat I have not, it sounded awful. I would quite like to see what actually happens in that game, but I don't think I could sit through 50 hours of stumbling through pretty environments to deliver a pizza.

Left it for tonight at the start of Chapter 17. I mostly liked Chapter 16. The shit bits were the parking garage fights, Tifa's incredibly slow parkour in the lobby and finding another battle arena. But a lot of the rest was pretty good. I actually appreciated getting to see a bit more of Shinra behind the scenes than you do in the original.

The Shinra building is impressive, but the idea of an electric power company basically ruling everything is a bit mad.

It would be like if N-Power, or Swalec was in charge of London.

Yeah, I'm in 17 myself and don't object to seeing a bit more of the Shinra building. The Drum is pretty cool.

N Power probably would’ve been bossin things if they’d have rocked up with current electrical technology in the mid 19th century

I liked the little walk through museum thing, that was the kind of expansion that is appreciated.

Then you get to the labs....

Heh, true. Maybe N-Power was a bad parallel, as Mako is probably closer to oil, than anything else, so maybe Shell or BP?

I guess some oil companies do have a lot of power in our world.

Been a while since I played the original game, but isn't part of the back story (in the North Corel section) that Shinra put the fossil fuel industry out of business once it brought Mako to market?

@SolidSCB Guessing you mean the wards? I left it right before entering ward 3 the other night...

Yep, a truly awful section that throws the pacing off massively and just feels completely out of place when the urgency is just ramping up. Another example of how they've tried to stretch pointless bits.

I'd definitely agree with this observation! The stagger meter system doesn't bother me per se, but the number of times I've activated a precious Limit Break to do some big damage just as a boss has staggered and... You get a short cut scene of the boss leaping away to evolve its abilities, whilst Cloud is jumping around like a loon slashing at thin air, and the battle resumes with the boss having a rejuvenated stagger meter and your Limit Break meter back at zero 😬.

Still I do rather like the battle system in this, its fast and fluid and when it all clicks it looks awesome. I'm up to half way though Chapter 16 on my hard playthrough having taken the lift this time, heh!

The mako energy and more so the jenova research derived technology were what put Shinra in control of things, the rest of the world was largely pre-industrial villages where people use Chocobos for transport

I've found the wards. These just don't end, do they? On and on and on and on...

I've finally given up and put the difficulty to easy. It's not the actual difficulty that's the problem, but rather that on normal difficulty, every single fight takes SO. FUCKING. LONG.

Yeah, that was the same reason I switched down, I just need it to end.

Last thing I did was beat the sword...ipede.

Surely classic mode would also make it all take longer, too :D

Just finished it, don’t get the bitching about the ending at all. Nothing critical to the plot was explicitly changed. Don’t see how they could’ve gone the episode routed needed to have a climactic ending and leave things on a cliffhanger, and done it any better

Nothing as bad or as long as mementos

@elstoof And yet, Mementos never bothered me in the slightest. I enjoyed it in Royal.

Probably because fights in P5 are really quick and once you have the Chariot confidant levelled enough, you can skip most of them.

FF7R's fights, on the other hand, just take forever unless you drop the difficulty.

@Psiloc Don't get me wrong, I still like FF7R overall. It's probably in 8/10 territory with me (think I must be nearly done now). I just wish they'd padded it less and gone for a great 20 hour game rather than an occasionally maddening 40 hour one. Or extended the story beyond Midgar.

Find it really interesting how our take on the two can be so opposite, I mean I love Persona but it’s a fucking slog. P4G might be my goat, but I’m under no illusion that it’s only a few steps up from an interactive anime with pointlessly long dungeon crawls to pad out an already fully stuffed pillow of a game. The dungeon bits of this remake, the sewer, the wards, the underground lab etc, they’re all done in 1-2 hours tops. I’ve spent days going through repetitive persona dungeons! I did zero grinding and there weren’t really any fight that took that long, even boss battles were over fairly swiftly. The final boss must’ve taken me no more than 10 minutes last night

Yeah, for me it's one of those games where I understand completely people's problems with it, but I personally still love it.

Persona 5 on the other hand I couldn't get past how slow paced it was
