So I am seriously contemplating moving back up 'narth. I've not been burgled or been involved in a violent altercation for over a decade and I could use living somewhere comparatively cheap.

I've been to Manchester a few times in the last couple of years and I get the impression that it is rather a decent place. I know that a lot of EG forumites reside in the area but hopefully this has kept the property prices in check. With that in mind, where would those in the know consider living if you had a budget of around 175-200k? What I am looking for is somewhere reasonably lively, good access to cafes and bars, easy access to the airport and a relatively low level of stabbage. I'll be on my own (boo-hoo.. so lonely...) but will work from home so need a sizeable 1-bed or 2-bed place.

Commence argument on gentrification in 3..2..1..

    Thanking ye.

I only really know about South Manchester in terms of living in it, but places like didsbury, chorlton etc are nice. 175-200k might be pushing a bit in the low side there though - at least in didsbury.

10 minutes further down the m60 gets you to places like cheadle/ cheadle hulme, which are also nice. I live in bramhall which is another 10 mins away but is gorgeous.

I think things are generally a bit cheaper in north Manchester though

I actually love rain. The weather is a draw if anything. I spend a lot of time in France and it's too fucking hot and sunny for my liking.

Do you have wife and kids?

I was going to recommend Chorlton I don't know much about North Manchester..

A 2 bed for £200k will give you access to most areas in Manchester,

I'd probably look at Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale, Urmston (Up and coming)

Good to know. What about the city center? It really doesn't seem shabby but is it liveable? or affordable generally?
  • Deleted user 29 August 2014 11:29:15
Can you walk with an exaggerated sense of self-importance?

Only joking Mancsters. I quite like Manchestah as a city, in terms of the centre. £200k seems to get you quite a bit if you're happy to be within a half mile of Deansgate

You'd be looking at an overpriced apartment if you wanted city centre. All of the places listed above give you easy access to the Centre - max 15 minutes.

What about the transport situation? I understand that there is a metro system but it does it run to the outlying areas till late if I go on regular benders*

*as is nights out, not the other thing**

**which is cool. It's the 21 century after all.

Manchester is a fairly lively place, second city and all that, it's also a bit of a building site at the moment, loads of new apartment complexes or renovations of old industrial building.

If you can buy off plan they builders will give you a discount, throw in furniture, appliances etc, pay stamp duty and legal fees and in some cases part pay your mortgage deposit.

If it's walking distance from the main shopping district then it's walking distance from pretty much everything and thus desirable. Around the Bridgewater canal basin and extending along the canal there's a lot of new stuff being built, Ellesmere Street is getting a fancy new build http://www.detrafford.com/the-roof-gardens/

Its very liveable whatever that means. It's got a very well laid transport infrastructure, so is easy to get around, taxi's don't cut off your leg, if your coming from London South East then nights out are exponentially cheaper.

One thing i noticed about manchester is everyone is fucking massive.

Either tall, or built like a brick shithouse or both.

I always felt like a short ass over there, unlike london where i feel like your average joe.

@Dante_Cubit You can buy a one bed in the place above for 105k and that took me two minutes to find having remembered it from an article in Grand Designs magazine, you'll definitely be able to find somewhere central that suits your needs for the money you've got

It the lack of proper air pollution up north. You just don't get the right toxic mix of growth inhibiting chemicals beyond the Mason- Birmingham line.

I think you have to be fundamentally mad for it.

@Dante_Cubit As EL Merko says it may be worth checking the property section of something like the Manchester Evening News to see what developments are in the works around the Manchester.

5'8" and I generally shop at Waitrose. I might have a steak bake if I am pissed out of head but will then cut myself to release the devil spirits.

I do actually recall their being an incredibly high Greggs density (henceforth GD) in Manchester. Oxfordshire is extremely low on the GD scale.

Well thanks for all of the input. It sounds like it is certainly viable. I should have a little bit of cash left over for a crossbow.

I work in London a fair bit and I feel probably slightly shorter than most people which fits with the statistics. Oxford however, every fucking 15 year old is 6'2". That's what 500 years of eating properly gets you.
