Registered 14 years agoNot sure if that is Eurogamer or not but reading a few posts on the Master Race sub reddit was enough to convince me he is spot on. I really dislike how a hobby of making dots interact with other dots, or polygons or whatever, raises such anger in people. -

Meh, EG got noticed by GG a while back after that article on GG. There's been various threads on KiA about this site and nothing has ever come of it. Probably because it wasn't written by a woman
Ah well, looks like EG have been roped into the GG hatecycle regardless. Have fun with that!

Registered 11 years agoSomeone alluded to it earlier, but basically game reviews in their current form have a very, very limited life anyway. So it barely seems worth trying to shake things up.
There's two massive trends that need to be accommodated:
1. The rise of short form content - the basic fact that people just can't be fucked to read as much these days (don't personally tell me you do, that's not the point; it's an established trend and the reason crap like Buzzfeed exists - ie content in simple list form).
2. Video/'lets play'. Like it or not, and I'm always interested at the negativity of comments about it, video / 'lets play' videos are the future for games media. Eurogamer seems to be investing more in this area which is a good thing. Gaming obviously lends itself well to video and more and more people can now watch these videos on their main TV (like, through smart TV apps or Apple TV etc) or on their phones. It's the logical evolution for game-related content - we've just had to wait a bizarre amount of time for the tech to become more mainstream (as in the tech that allows 'unprofessional' people to capture game footage). Now it has, though, these videos are popping up everywhere - and ultimately the advertisers will follow.
I think arguing about whether to have scores or not is massively missing the point - or the looming iceberg ready to take down a bunch of gaming sites that don't evolve with the times. I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that by the end of next year the vast majority of Eurogamers content will be video-based, with copy taking a backseat. -

Read and be bored. Short answer, it reads better. -

The rise of short form content - the basic fact that people just can't be fucked to read as much these days
Personally, I think that's their (the readers') problem. I like long-form-reviews that are informative about gameplay and features instead of being a vehicle for stand-up comedy, and almost everything I've seen in comments on this and other sites seem to agree.
I'd rather have a long, detailed review instead of short review that scrimps on detail in lieu of jokes any day.
Not that I'm advocating anything like IGN's notorious 12,000 word review of GTA: San Andreas, of course. That would just be insane.

Just having a browse on /r/gamedev when I saw this:
Asked to pay $22,000 by popular YouTuber for our game to be featured.
Bad enough, however one of the more eyebrow raising replies was:
I lost respect for a few of the larger gaming channels, when giving away review keys, and they spat "offers" like this right back at me.
One even asked for another 5% gross profit for 6 months, after the upfront payment for 1 "15min positive "review".
I have yet to hear of an indie dev use that kind of money on a video, in most cases its even far beyond any marketing budget, and use it on 1 video is absurt. -

Ah yes, I was trying to think of the best thread for this. Still I figured YouTubers do fill the same general space as the press now. -

Yeah, but what about the YouTubers?
In all seriousness though, yes absolutely really. A lot of the "traditional" gaming press came up in a very similar way. Look how EG was founded for example. Now we've got a new wave of hobbyist enthusiasts looking to make a living out of talking about games, only they're doing it in video form instead. We're already seeing the biggest of them form into "proper" companies, and they're going for the same audience for the most part as well. -

Registered 16 years agoWell, regardless of who is technically correct, this is basically what happens when you have no accountability or guidance.
No one to say 'you can't do that' or 'you're killing your brand'. -

Nah db is right that his thread was more suitable really. But I couldn't find it and I felt there was enough of an overlap that this one would be suitable too.
