Owning a premium watch is the same as owning anything premium to me; 75% because it's better quality and 25% because other people can't. Exclusionary is the point. It's what keeps premium brands in business alongside quality.

If I just wanted to know the time I'd look at my phone.

What makes you think Tag is a premium brand?

But there is a difference between premium and 'class', I think is all everyone is saying. Hummers cost a fortune and they scream chav, for instance.

I don't agree. One person having a good sense of style in no way precludes/excludes others having it.

Must be scary times for Tim Cook. This will be Apple's first new product category since Steve Jobs passed away. If it flops or is a minor hit, everyone will jump on him, say he hasn't got the magic touch of Jobs. Apple shares will bomb, he may even end up having to resign.

They must have been working on this for at least five years, so hopefully what they show will be far less primitive than the likes of what Samsung, Sony, et-al, have been showing in the last two years.

If they do produce another design masterpiece like the iPhone - and one that every other company copies, like in the case of Android and Windows Phone - it will cement Apple's position as the leading technology design house of its day.

Yep, I spent a fucking fortune on a Tag last year. I got it because I thought it was a beautiful looking watch and I could afford it. But it's all down to preference.

I've always had Tag watches and I really like them. However, I do think some models are really ugly looking.

But anyone buying a new item, whatever it may be, is going to get a thrill out of it.

You're giving a guy a hard time about getting a new watch and yet we're in a minority community who get erections from the un-boxing of a new console.

    Umm...

Edit: I may be in more of a minority than I originally thought.

Did you get a classically designed gents Tag, or just a regular one?

The fact that you use tag as an example of exclusivity is actually laughable.

They are the watch people get when they can't afford an omega or a rolex.

I got the one I really liked. Do I think it makes me a distinguished gentleman? Nope. But I was thrilled about getting it.

@kalel saying "I have more style than you" comes from the same school of thought as "I have more class than you". They're essentially the same thing as both are based on someone being judged for better or worse on their choices that boil down to meaningless superficiality. The clothes don't make the man and all that, innit.
Well, yeah, willy-waving about anything is a bit crass, but I still don't agree that "style" is about meaningless superficiality. It's about self-expression and personality. It's about reflecting what's on the inside. And it's quite an inclusive concept as anyone can have it. I just doubt anyone who equates it with expense and "class" does.

Poor Phoenix is sobbing into his bespoke leather carry case right now. He can barely see the watchface for the tears.

"What time is it?" he whispers to his TAG, stroking it like a newborn rabbit. "It's TAG time, baby. It's TAG time."

But that would involve wearing your iWatch on your right hand ... which as we all know is SUPER WRONG! (unless you're left handed, natch)

Although that is an interesting use. I could imagine something like that working, as a way to 'sync' you up to others around you somehow.

Would you like to replace contact: Dicky or Add To New?

They're exclusive in the same way a Louis Vuitton handbag is; priced at the high end of acceptable but not really comparable to something truly premium like an Hermes. The movements are bought in from ETA not made in house, you can buy one in any shopping centre in the world and everyone's got one practically.

There's nothing wrong with a Tag, but picking them out as premium in a market as exclusive as high end watches is all wrong. Something like a Patek, in-house calibre Cartier or an A. Lange are what should be considered the premium.

I honestly think the Beats comparison was pretty fair. Given you can get watches that would comfortably cost upwards of £500k, Tag are basically at the top end of consumer.

To relate this back to the topic, the more I think about it, the more I reckon Apple could justify £500+ for this.
  • Deleted user 8 September 2014 15:27:17
To 'justify' it though it'd have to look like...well, not like a smart watch.
