Gommorrah

Is anyone watching this on Sky Atlantic on mondays at 9pm.

It is made by the same production company which produced the Romonzo Criminale TV show. For those that are not familiar it's an Italian produced organized crime drama series about a Cammorra tribe in Naples set in modern times. The show focuses as all organized crime dramas do on the bonds of friendship and family during an internal power struggle as a result of outside forces.

The premise is that long time boss of the Tribe Don Savasnstrno makes a stupid error of judgment and finds himself locked in prison. On the outside there are two potential heirs to his throne. Genny his spoilt overweight, feckless but likeable son or Savastrno's long term right hand man Ciro who is ruthless, smart and streetwise. Genny's guardian protecting him from the manipulations of Ciro are his mother Lady Imma who is equal to her husband in criminal intellect.

I thought that last nights episode with Ciro in Madrid was one of the best hours of television in any genre. Ciro's inexorable push towards one fatal situation to the next, forced to complete what amounted to a suicide mission was an amazing piece of TV.

    That sounds very spoilery indeed.

Is this anything to do with the book/film?

Yeah, it's the TV series of the film/book.

It's very good indeed, more plot-driven than the film.

very loosely based on the book. The book is about the Comorra and this series is about a Comorra but it is a separate story. Much like the Romonzo Criminale TV series was very different from the film.

The setting of the premise is pretty much what occurs in the first episode there is a huge amount of juicy detail and sub plots which I purposely have missed out.

But the episode which was on last night just blew me away. The tension just kept ratcheting up and once you thought some sort of resolution had been reached another spanner was thrown in the works.

Fun anecdote about this show, one of the locations is an actual villa that belonged to a mafia boss...
And that boss (from jail) then demanded payment for the use of his villa...
And the production crew did so and tried to cover it up unsuccessfully...

@AcidSnake so you're saying he made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

My grandad's from Napoli. Sadly, he never knifed anyone in the back whilst holding some canoli.

Oh, I dunno, it's not as bleak as the film. They show the high life as well as the low.

This show is by far the best thing on tv at the moment last nights episode was one of the finest hours of tv in recent memory cannot wait for the finale. A second season has also been commissioned. This is also out soon on bluray and a must buy for me give it a go you will not be disappointed. If it was American would get a lot more press it's vastly superior to other gangster shows for example boardwalk empire which I can't wait to end and I also think its better than the sopranos it is certainly a lot more authentic.
