Blur (vs. PGR4)

(Apologies in advance for a topic that seems about three years too late!)

Ever since I first played PGR4, I've been completely in love with it - I think it's my all-time favourite racing game and, if it weren't for the likes Super Mario Galaxy, it might perhaps be my absolute favourite game. It's just everything about it, but in particular, the handling model just seems... sublime.

I'm not sure why but, when Blur first came out, it almost completely passed me by - I never managed to try the demo version and, shamefully, I forgot all about it. But, after I'd recently picked up Split/Second in a recent Xbox Live sale, and had been thinking back to PGR4, it got me wondering - am I missing out by not having played Blur?

Ordinarily, I'd just give it a go - but I have so many great memories of playing PGR4, and given Bizarre Creations' sad fate, I almost wouldn't want to taint that, if that makes sense?! I read a few people say that they were slightly disappointed, moving from PGR4 to Blur, and that the single player wasn't quite as enjoyable as the multiplayer. I was wondering if the multiplayer servers might still be active - and well-populated? It's just that, the other night, I played PGR4 for the first time in over five years - it lived up to all my memories - but I couldn't find anyone playing multiplayer. Is it likely to be similar for Blur? And if so, would it still be worth getting just for the single player? I'd been wondering if I might just be best to wait for Sumo Digital's version of Forza Horizon 2 on 360.

Incidentally, might anyone know if any Facebook groups or forums still arrange PGR4 multiplayer sessions, please? Thanks in advance.

Blur still had a fairly small but dedicated multiplayer community last time I played it about a year ago. Be warned, the people who are left are generally very good at the game.

The single player is a bit rubbish, you'd be disappointed with it coming from pgr. The multiplayer, however, is the best I've ever played for a racing game. One of my favourite games of the last console generation

Although the handling in Blur isn't what makes it good. It's very much an arcade racer, with more similarities to Mario Kart than a racing sim

I heard somewhere the servers were turned off for Blur but only found out 2 nights ago its still playable online, spent a lot of late nights with a friend playing online and both of us had a few games the other night. PGR4 was great but the bikes spoilt it personally and was between 360's so didn't play much of it.

Thanks very much for your advice - on balance, I wonder if I might perhaps be best to hang on to my very happy memories of PGR4, and to maybe wait for Forza Horizon 2. I'm just so annoyed with myself for missing out on Blur when it first came out! Although I suppose one additional purchase sadly wouldn't have changed what happened, I feel terrible knowing that poor sales perhaps contributed to Bizarre Creations' closing.

There are so many great racing games, but nothing quite feels to make up for the loss of Bizarre and PGR...

I think I put more hours into Blur than I did any other MP game mode on the 360.

Easily Acti's worst crime was closing Bizarre. They only ever made stellar games, but were screwed by idiotic marketing on Acti's part.

It was the depressing proof to me that talent counts for little in the game industry. All that was asked of them was to do the best job they could and make great games, which they more than delivered on, but Acti pulled the cord and made them redundant because of; a) bad marketing campaigns and naive release dates, and b) people were too stupid to buy their games in favour of inferior competition.

    :(

Online in a room on Blur right now on 360, not bad for 10yr old game.

    I'd love a PGR remake/remaster/new game.

    PGR was a great series
Forza Horizon - I want to love it but I just can’t. 4 for me excited with Edinburgh which got me thinking about PGR2 but wasn’t a patch on how good those layouts were.
