    Recommendations for a fun pacey 2D platformer/action-platformer on PS4?

Think Sonic Mania, the first half of the Messenger, nowt too challenging

@simpleexplodingmaybe Rayman Legends? Awesome game and still my favorite 2d platformer of all time. Quite old now so you should be able to get a copy dirt-cheap.

The musical levels are something to behold.

Really enjoying Far Cry 5 at the moment. I've not been a big fan of the franchise (apart from FC1), but I've sank the majority of the last two days in to it and I'm really in to it.

Thanks to a free month of Origin Access, I got to try Need For Speed Heat.

... oh boy. After just the intro, some open world driving, and a race, it's uninstalled.

I can see why nobody is talking about it, not even EA. This thing is... how should I put it? It looks scrappy even by modern NFS standards. On my RX 480, it can't keep 60fps even on all low details and rendering resolution at 85% of ultrawide 1080p. If you install it on a regular HDD, prepare for a constant groan, as the drive platters understand it's better to kill themselves than keep up with this crap.

And that's not even going into the game proper. Nevermind the dudebro stuff, the handling is subpar. Drifting feels amazing...ly unsatisfying. Yes, this is probably the worst-feeling drifting ever, and unfortunately it's so easy to pull off that you'll be doing it even when you don't want to (aka all the time).

By the way, check out those assets at low details.

You'd think this should run at 60fps on a potato.

@Reacher FC5 was the first game in the series that I didn't bounce off since the original (and even the original had that FUCKING VOLCANO LEVEL). Ended up doing a moderately completionist playthrough and really enjoying it.

Sadly, New Dawn isn't anything like as good (and is much more aggressive in pushing pay-to-win stuff). Still sort-of worth playing for the linear expedition-missions, though, which are very nicely done.

@Rogueywon I doubt I'll go much further after finishing the main game. I'm just ( I think) at the end of the first zone , John's. I'm really eager to move and press on to the next stage. Just something about the game clicks with me.

It's one of the very best. So much variety in the gameplay too and all done perfectly.

So I'm trying my hand at Pathologic HD again. I got past the hurdle of the first day, at least.

People complained about the survival meters in P2, but I didn't have all that much trouble with it. However, this seems much worse. I dunno how long I'll last.

Getting to see the story from the perspective of the Bachelor is refreshing though. Even if the overall plot isn't exactly the same as in P2.

Spiderman - good fun. Was a bit concerned at first as it piles on ubi open world icons on you but I have been won over by it so far. Story missions are good fun and theyíve nailed the characterisation of the characters etc. It really
Lifts the game and itís a genuinely funny game.

    Modern Warfare Multiplayer.

Enjoying it mostly. Has a few issues but I never take it too seriously. Liking the slower pace and back to its roots/strip back gameplay.

Borderlands 3, Level 27. Loved every new environment until now but Eden 6 has really taken the wind out of my sails. Not a fan of swamp levels at all.

@Daeltaja Eden 6 does go on a bit. It has a further problem in that the level-progression of its areas is either bugged or badly designed. You'll do an area - Voracious Canopy - which is actually pretty fun (not all swamp) and will have enemies at around level 30-31ish. Then right after that, you do Ambermire, which is a huge swamp with enemies right back down at level 26 or so. So not only is it huge, but you get fuck all from it in terms of loot/xp.

I'd honestly suggest just blitzing through some of these areas on the critical path. You can go back and do sidequests later (areas auto-balance to your level after you finish the story). The game has far more sidequests and challenges than you actually need to stay levelled for the story. On the two characters where I finished the story, I saw the end credits roll at level 44. The final areas are balanced for 38-39ish.

Just started judgment after sitting on since launch, dunno if Iím just not in the mood or what but itís really stop/start to begin with. I just want to get on with it. Also maybe the combat gets looser with time but it just feels a bit rigid, I was under the impression it had really free flowing combat. Doesnít feel as good as yakuza just yet, very early days of course.

Tbf, felt obliged to pop back in and say, thereís something about this. Came close to dropping within first hour or so but it does have that puzzly Phoenix Wright, examine evidence, ask people questions, put the facts together kind of thing that I dig. Curious to see how deep this aspect goes, and the combat seems to have got a tad better with a few upgrades.
Itís a very clumsy game though, and I end up bashing into everything. Theyíve even made your office so cluttered you canít walk out the door properly.
Also thereís soooo much walking/running involved between every..single...quest step so far.

Interesting but could have benefitted from some obvious tightening up

    Flockers

    Sheep themed Lemmings type thing.

The backgrounds are too busy and the game is slightly too fast.

It's not that difficult more that the pace prevents it from ever settling into that meditative groove that Lemmings had and that I want from a game like this.

    Current list:

Borderlands 3 (PC) - I've got a Zane and a Moze at 50. Levelling an Amara solo and a Fl4k in co-op. The writing's not great, but the gameplay is superb.

Code Vein (PC) - I took a long time to warm to this, but I'm really enjoying it now. It's a Soulslike for people who don't like Dark Souls (FWIW, I love Dark Souls). It's not that hard, it's fast paced and the storytelling is very traditionally JRPG-ish, rather than the genre's usual environmental storytelling.

Remnant: From the Ashes (PC) - Pressing on with this slowly, but preferring Code Vein.

Atelier Ryza (PC) - Silly, low-stakes relaxing JRPG. A good Sunday-afternoon game. Nothing special going on here, but the protagonist is fun (didn't think a girl could get so excited about a barrel).

Slay the Spire (PC) - Beaten the Heart as the Defect and the Silent. Just the Ironclad to go.

Horace (PC) - I'm normally a bit skeptical of pixelart indiewank, but this is keeping me entertained so far. Nice soundtrack.

Super Robot Wars X (PS4) - Pressing on through NG+ slowly. About a third of the way through.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC) - Parked for now until they patch it. Terrible PC port.

PS4: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Picked it up digitally for almost nothing. I really like it. Simplified open world (no icon overload!) with a focus on good stealth and combat, plus itís set in my favourite fantasy universe. Can anyone tell me whether the sequel, Shadow of War, is worth the purchase? I thought I was done with the open world genre until I tried this.

Switch: Door Kickers: Assault Heroes. Itís great. Get it.

It's so tempting to start over on breath of the Wild, but if I do, I'll never have time for the sequel.

Doing my usual thing of picking up a game cheap, have a quick blast then not playing it for ages.
Have restarted Far Cry 5 again after not really getting on with it when I picked it up.
They key here for me is that I started by taking out Faith's region first this time rather than following the game's push towards Falls End and John's region and I'm really, really enjoying it.
It is a bit mental to start off with but definitely Far Cry once you get going and loving the setting, score and voice acting (especially Joseph Seed).
Although a bit quirky at times the companion system works well and I like how you can hire random locals as well as specialists to help you out.

Currently playing through Mass Effect 2 on the PC. This must be about my 5th playthrough now, last played it about 3.5 years ago.

With the "ALOT" texture mods the game still looks really good even today. Currently playing in 4k 60fps and the game looks lovely.

IMO this is the best game ever made. Excellent writing and characters. Fantastic gameplay. Really enjoy spending time with the team.

@Zippity-zap The second one is good, but I preferred the first. Classic sequel symptoms- more stuff layered on (sieges, recruiting orks etc) and bigger environments but the extra complexity doesn't necessarily improve the game. The nemesis system seemed better in the first too. Still worth playing if you can get it on the cheap, the core game is dead similar.

@quadfather Thing is, I can't rush that game. I clocked 170 hours on my first playthrough and no doubt I'll try for that again. I was obsessed.

Right this is getting silly now...

    Xbox
Gears 3 and Gears 5: Horde and KOTH modes
AC Odyssey. Maybe chapter 7 ? tens of hours into it. Enjoying but have not played for maybe 2 weeks.
Outer Worlds. About 5 hours in ? have 2 companions and I have just landed on the first world after getting the "Unreliable"
Rage 2. Will probably start today, thank you Gamepass.

also downloaded Sea of Thieves earlier as I want the Gears ship load out! on the off chance I ever play the game.

    360
    Divinity 2 TDKS

    PS4
    Borderlands 3. Chapter 6
    Borderlands THC, BL2 Chapter 10 ?
GR Wildlands. Just started, loved and completed on xbox upon release.

    PS3
Alpha Protocol. Just started, loved and completed (several ending) son xbox upon release.
Deadly Premonition complete edition. Only played a few hours and that was well over a month ago.

...I usually play one story game at a time, my head hurts!

NSW Pokťmon Shield. Ah, the excitement of a new, shiny game!

NSW Breath of the Wild The Champions' Ballad DLC - I'd abandoned this month's ago as that pigging Shrine with all the spiky floors, walls and swinging balls was doing my head in. I picked it back up after finishing the game again in Master Mode.
