@DrStrangelove Yeah, I had a bit of a rant about Horace's gameplay in the Recently Completed Games thread. I really don't think the difficulty they went for was at all the right choice for a narrative-heavy game.

I'm generally not a fan of the pixelart style and agree it is often used as a lazy shortcut by indie developers who use it to mask "couldn't be arsed/didn't have the money to hire decent artists". But Horace does some clever things with it later on. When the camera zooms right out and the blocky pixels fade from view, it can be a very pretty game.

Wolfenstein 2: I've popped the difficulty down to Don't Hurt Me and enjoying just blasting and sneaking through. I'll play pure stealth games or action adventure games on hard but something like this I think is more fun just running around shooting Nazis, so couldn't be bothered with the amount of dying I was doing. This difficulty seems just right.

RE: Revelations: I have pretty much all available RE games installed on the PS4 and I'm just going through them all. Going to do RE4 after this. Enjoying it though. Impressive that it was first out on the DS as there's quite alot of game here.

Witcher 3: After my second break I'm back into it again. I knew I would be once I began to watch the Netflix series, so just trying to remember where I left off. Looks like I just have a couple bits to mop up in Novigrad then it's off to Skellige. It's a big game, so I don't mind taking breaks from it now and again. It's still marvellous.

I've started Horace today. Only got past the super-long intro/tutorial/whatever. I just reached the mainland.

I know people say it's hard, but we'll see about that. What bothers me so far is that sometimes junk can't be picked up without sacrificing a life and restarting the stage.

@Malek86 You're getting close to the first difficulty spike, which comes when you return to the island to get into the basement. That's actually fairly gentle compared to the later stuff, but it is a big escalation from anything into the introductory sections.

Most - but not all - areas can be revisted later on with tools that makes collecting junk much easier. This is, among other things, a metroidvania.

@Rogueywon the more games I play, the more I start to despise metroidvania as a genre. They seem specifically designed to pad out the length by making you go through areas multiple times.

I'm also playing Lords of Shadow, and every once in a while I find an item that "you can't reach with your current powers, you should come back later". Although at least in that case it's never mandatory to proceed, but what are the chances of me replaying through the game when I already have a gigantic backlog?

@Malek86 For the most part, the backtracking bits of Horace aren't too bad. It's generally just for optional stuff and when the plot takes you through the same area more than once, there are solid story reasons for it.

There is an actual, proper metroidvania section in the game's second half, with a large, interconnected dungeon, multiple new traversal options opening up and so on. You can actually skip the majority of it if you want (I did, as I just wanted to finish the story by that point), but there is some more traditional metroidvania back tracking there, with the added stress-factor caused by having certain sections of it locked into a time-limit (albeit a very generous one that seems more designed to add stress than actually trip you up).

Itís not perfect but in my head-canon itís the real RE5 and itís so much better than any handheld exclusive spin-off has a right to be

Escape From Tarkov seems to be the real deal. Iíd slept on it for a couple of years but picked it up this week with all the hype itís getting and itís a cracking mil sim looter gun-porno.

By comparison PUBG wasnít my cup of tea but EfT is a great mix of hardcore and fun.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PC) - it's ok but after completing the previous two reboots I'm starting to be slightly tired of the formula. I mean, Trinity, again? /eyes roll
Must persevere for completion's sake, plus this one seems to be a bit shorter (hopefully).

    Wolftenstien 2:

Decent. Much better game when you go pistol with a silencer (when the games allows you too). Looks really pretty too. Engaging story and characters so far but getting regularly caught in objects in the game world is unforgivable really in a FPS title in this day and age. I would also like the team to design the game a bit more. Have more specific Health/armour and ammo locations instead of throwing them everywhere and having to mash Square to pick them up.

    Horizon Chase Turbo.

Mixed bag. When it works its fun to play. Short quick burst of arcade fun. However getting past the first 7/8 cars is a fucking ball ache and not fun. Having said that I am enjoying progressing in the world tour just to see how they representthe new countries. Its a very rich and visually engaging game.

    Dead Cells

Great fun. Really enjoying this. Though I have slowed down by play time a bit. Regularly getting to the hand of the king boss and dying, so finding getting past the 'first world' a bit tiresome. But it is a really sharp game.

So how long is Horace? I've just reached chapter 7 and still only have two upgrades. The difficulty level is high, but not too high as to become unejoyable. But it's getting repetitive. At this point I'm only playing for the story.

Horace is, if I remember, 21 chapters. It kind of bulges in the middle - the middle chapters tend to be long, with the early and late ones being much shorter. At the star of chapter 7, you are still well under half-way through the game and while you've done the first few difficulty spikes, there is much worse to come.

That said, the story's best bits are also still to come.

Still Witcher 3 and still loving it.

I'm intrigued by the patch they are putting out for the Switch which they say well be worth the wait. Potentially is showing access to extra graphic settings like removing AA.

Making slow progress through White Orchard in Witcher 3. Iím enjoying that combat is relatively low in frequency and exploration and chatting and going about my business is higher priority. Feels like playing RDR1 in terms of balance between action and other stuff without getting faffy.

I am surprised at how many glitches Iíve seen like horses snagged on scenery galloping on the spot and monsters or villagers stuck in animation loops but Iím digging this world.
  • Deleted user 23 January 2020 21:44:07
@simpleexplodingmaybe I've only seen two glitches so far (80 hours I'm guessing). One was a kid floating 50 in the air and the other was a rain storm of deer, where a dozen or so just appeared in mid air and fell to the ground and then ran off.

I've had about 8 crashes. Most of those have been when I've gone to the stash, so now I just don't use it.

Finished chapter 8 in Lords of Shadow.

I must be pretty close to the end at this point. Just as well, since it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

Oh blimey, a couple of patches have really improved MechWarrior 5. Nothing earth-shaking. Just a few changes to balance and to the design of procedurally-generated missions. It still has flaws, but this is a massive upswing.

Just did a mission where I was in a Jagermech-A... sat on a hill raining LRM death on the enemy. Pre-patches, that would have sucked because a) LRMs did basically no damage and b) the game would have spawned a bunch of enemies right on top of me where I couldn't defend myself in a fire-support mech. This time, it actually worked.

I'm playing and loving DQXI on the Switch, and Death Stranding on the PS4.

But my wife wanted to play Fable on the Xbox, so we've set it back up, and I've (re)bought Project Gotham 2, Halo and Burnout 3.

They proper need to do a new Project Gotham game. The Xbox One is the only console I haven't bought, but I would get one in a shot if they did.

Still very much enjoying both Wolfenstein 2 and RE: Revelations. Although Revelations has just introduced what has to be two of the worst characters that have ever featured in a game. Ever. Thankfully their sections so far have been quite brief. Wolfenstein 2 is managing to go increasingly more batshit as it goes on. It's wonderful.

Auditioning for a film role in front of a puking, pissing, paranoid Hitler on Venus is certainly up there in "is this actually in a game I'm playing" territory.

Still Borderlands 3, some 400 hours in. This game is so fucking awesome, easily the best game in 7 years. More if you think it's even better than BL2, which I do.

Well I've played BL2 for 1000 hours, but that was over 7 years. Clearly I wasted too much time with irrelevant crap that doesn't involve playing Borderlands. I won't make that mistake again.

Steam reckons I've got 402 hours on Borderlands 2. I won't be at anything close to that on BL3, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm closing on 100.

Add me to the "BL2 is my most played game on Steam" camp. Though my playtime is far from you all's insane numbers /only played solo/.

I just started RE2 on PS4 Pro and fuck me, the HDR is bloody stunning.
Really enjoying it so far, playing as Leon and still in the Police Station, I never played the original thankfully so it's all fresh.

Got up before dawn so I could get to a 24 hour supermarket before the crowds. Home and unpacked. Now to treat myself with a new set of cat armour (the Witcher)
