    @simpleexplodingmaybe The second half is much better paced. I feel like the first half is meant to wear you down to reflect what Ellie is experiencing at that point. Don't be discouraged by the length!

    Actually I’ve just thought of a second criticism - Hotline Miami wasn’t playable on that PSP

    Still working my way through Yakuza: LAD

    Fuck me this game drags on a bit! (something something "dragons" too... I'm too tired to work that into a pun)
    Bloody good though when you get past the first 10 or so hours of back to back cutscenes with a little bit of action in between.

    Pretty much got to the point where I can't be fucked with any more mindless wandering and have just started ploughing through the main story until I hit a level gate or just get tired of several more hours of cutscenes...

    I was a bit worried they’d play too similarly to each other but after an hour or so whether its in my head or not I’m feeling the difference now

    Decided to play the modern Tomb Raider trilogy. About 75% the way through the first one. Some parts of this are just bewildering and it definitely smacks of a cross-gen 360 to One title.

    The good: Does look pretty nice in parts on Series X.

    The bad: So far, a LOT. The fights are a bit shit. The puzzles are a bit shit. Who the fuck is lighting all the candles in the inaccessible tombs? Why does Lara decide to turn a turret gun on someone when she's literally carrying a menagerie of weapons? How is she just fine after being impaled right at the start?

    I know the answer is "coz videogame" but wasn't this supposed to be a more realistic take?

    Please say the second one improves on a lot of this stuff?

    I think Rise is worse actually. I've restarted it repeatedly but never even got past what I suspect is the half way point while I did finish the first one right away.

    Rise felt rather bland IMO. Haven't tried Shadow.

    I'll finish this one and see how I cope with the next one. It just doesn't feel like a Tomb Raider. I genuinely enjoyed the previous two (Legends and Anniversary I think?).

    I feel like I'll be doing the same as yourself and giving up midpoint through the second one.

    I'm about to stop playing Horizon Zero Dawn again, because the parts of it that are junk are again overwhelming the things I like. It's a shame, but there you go.

    Instead I'm going to play Death Stranding, because even if it is shit it still looks interesting. And I'm still plugging away at Hitman 3, which is heaps of fun in small bursts.

    I think Rise addresses a lot of the issues the first one had in adding more intricate puzzles and combat feeling better attuned to the character. But then it also added a bigger focus on map spam, collectibles and crafting and all the other semi-open world nonsense that was trendy at the time.

    I did enjoy them both at the time but I didn’t feel any need to pick up the third one.
  • Deleted user 4 July 2021 00:50:41
    Exactly, the generic open world stuff is what really got in the way for me. That and much of the environment being quite uninteresting.

    Probably sounds like I hated it, which I didn't. It completely failed to grab me though.

    Scarlet nexus: I really wish they would decide on a story arc and stick with it. Combat is fun but I just finished chapter 8 of kusane’s story and they just added another story arc.

    Also everyone’s insurance on trying to kill each other and then forgiving them 2 seconds later is really jarring.

    Nartia boy

    Managed to get back into (weirdly last time I played it, got stuck as something I did to progress, didn't register despite saving) Shame they didn't improve the movement, its very imprecise. Does feel like they spend more time giving it an style rather than polishing the main game

    So I'm getting into Death Stranding, and I... think I love it?

    It's weird coming to it from Horizon: Zero Dawn, which like just about all open-world games is jam-packed with *stuff*: collectibles, challenges, races, side quests and errands (H:ZD even has a whole side tab for errands).

    But here you're basically just asked to deliver something from A to B without falling over and breaking it. And it's great! It's like a hiking or orienteering sim, but with weird shadow things to avoid, dead babies, and Guillermo del Toro playing a character called Deadman. He's well-acquainted with the dead, you see.

    I liked the concept of it as a hiking sim, but was put off by the confusing menus, constant cut-scenes and weird story stuff. Basically, I'd prefer a version of it that was not directed by Kojima.

    @Mola_Ram You’ve got such good stuff to come. Some of my all time favourite gaming moments are in DS.

    Yeah I haven’t played it but the hiking seems the most appealing part to me

    Abandoned Horizon for similar reasons. It's really good for ten hours or so but then becomes very repetitive.

    Unfortunately DS is guilty of this as well, but at least the batshit story and some really neat setpieces are enough to carry it through.

    Ha see you've played some more since that post I quoted.

    I loved the hiking at first but when you have to deliver your 30th package, that novelty really wanes.

    I absolutely loved Death Stranding on my first playthrough, but about half way through a second playthrough I had to abandon it and don't think I'll ever play it again. I think what I enjoyed so much the first time around was seeing the story and lore unfold and all the seemingly random bizarre stuff getting explained in a surprisingly coherent way. The world also unfolds at a steady pace as do the various tools at your disposal. Without that novelty the second playthrough was kind of a chore and a few other things started to grate too. I still rate it very highly and would probably call it something of a masterpiece, but it's very much one-and-done for me.

    Yeah it's pretty Kojima-heavy. But I wasn't put off by the lengthy cutscenes at the start, so I think I've probably got a bit of a tolerance for it.

    It is absolutely alright to love Death Stranding.
    I found a couple of "zones" in that game that I loved being in. Easily one of my favourite of the last generation.

    @Graxlar,
    I'm about the same point in Scarlet Nexus and agree. It's a lot of fun to play, the combat and general style is great.
    But I've started checking my phone when the cut scenes kick in and just don't think there's been any memorable set piece like moments.
    That said,I'll definitely hang in for the alternate 2nd play through.

    Fez on the switch. Pisser is that I can't remember some of the puzzle codes and online only provides other console codes as the buttons are different. Bah.

    @PickledShogun

    Cracking shout with system shock 2. Do you play it vanilla or with mods?

    @PickledShogun

    It's a brilliant game regardless. There's one mod that tidies up the monsters a bit graphically, which makes it a bit more pleasing but yeah, don't really need them.

    It's making me want to start a game of it too now. Maybe full PSI. But I love the hacking so much

    System Shock 2 could use some mods though, because the vanilla game is ridiculously unbalanced. The three specialties are basically difficulty modes. I can't imagine the hell one would go through if they were to choose full PSI on their first playthrough.
