I do telemarketing but business to business, the TPS thing is a right nightmare for me. In the states now they are moving towards people having to opt IN to receive calls rather than opt out. If I call someone who is on the TPS list I can get a personal fine :(

Commiserations pete, but these things are a real nuisance, particularly for the elderly. Though I'm signed up, and made sure my elderly rellies are too, we still get the odd call. Though a swift mention of TPS has 'em scrabbling to put the phone down, which is always enjoyable...!

We are registered with TPS and also block all id withheld calls. Cuts junk calls to 0. Tho it does cause some problems my ISP phoned me up at the weekend and he apologised that he could not see my details on his screen as he was calling from the fax machine.

    SCHWEET. Just what I need!!

Always gets my heart thumping when the landline goes off expecting my folks. Except it's either a pre-recorded message or some telecom company offering cheaper calls (yet strangely enough calling form india and such like)

Oh don't get me wrong, I think it's a great thing for home use. Telesales to old folks is totally evil, and junk mail gets right on my tits. I generally call IT directors, and I have no problem annoying them day in day out!

I found out last week that my gran is being plagued by telemarketers several times a day, so I've passed on the TPS details to my dad to sort her out. She's 89 and living in a council house on a pension, ffs, why would she want double-glazing or a 3G mobile phone? Do these telemarketers use any criteria in selecting the numbers to call, or is it completely random?

Unfortunately TPS doesn't stop the "Hi! This is Obviously Madeup-Name at the Blah Blah holiday company and you have been selected to win..." bollocks. Because if you're scamming people anyway, why should you care about a TPS list?

What happens is companies buy lists of contact details from various other companies ("we may pass your details to reputable companies for marketing purposes"), that gets uploaded onto some kind of CRM system, then that goes through to an automatic dialler so the telesales gimp really has no idea who they are calling, the system does it automatically. With the TPS if you still get called you can kick up a right fuss, and you have some authority behind you. Get your gran on the TPS, if she gets another call all she has to say is "TPS" and they'll leave her alone

You know we really should introduce Gamefaqs to Netstumbler sometime. I'm sure they'd get along famously :)

    From ther site: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Do you know you can register mobile telephone numbers?

The Telephone Preference Service can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of live marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. This is because under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2004 it is unlawful to send an unsolicited sales and marketing text message.

Bummer :( The law should be changed!

Hang on, maybe my English is rusty, or it's too early, but reads to me that it's illegal to send an unwanted SMS if it's sales and marketing. ?

It is, although at the moment it's very hard to prove whether someone opted-in/solicited them in the first place. Most proper SMS marketing messages have an opt-out shortcode on them now, as in ones you get from your network, but others are still taking the piss.

In future though, look carefully at you contract before you sign and you'll probably find a box to tick somewhere that exempts you from them.

B2B is made more difficult by this. it just means we dont get the easy ride anymore and have to get out there and put in the grind on the road. Business used to be done without telesales and anyway, telesales is one of the most innefficient methods with conversion rates @ around 2-3% if yer lucky.

Good excuse to get a car & wireless b/band account off the boss! ;0)

We also bar any calls that don't show their id. I've got maybe one or 2 friends that don't display their number but they always leave messages. Call id is so useful.
