| It's worth noting that the grand-daddy of mechs, the IBM Model M is still being manufactured, but not by IBM any more. The only downsides I can see is you can't get black keys with a black keyboard (only grey) and while you can buy black replacement buttons that's an extra cost and you won't be able to see the legend on them, as they only print them in black writing too. They do sell coloured legends, but not on black keys. And while it appears they will do alternative layouts, I can't find a definitive list of the layouts they'll do, so I dunno for sure if they'll do any layout other than US. That said, I bought my Filco in US layout, as they didn't do UK layout, and other than double quote being in an arguably better place on the US layout, and you not having enough spare keys to use as dead key diacritics if you do any serious typing in other languages, the US keyboard isn't that different the the UK one. |

Registered 17 years agoI've got one of those Unicomp Model M remakes. Real nice for typing, very satisfying to write an angry letter to the editor or threatening note to your latest stalking target on one of them. -
What an unexpectedly educational thread.
I used to be able to touch-type fairly fast and fairly accurately, but I think I've lost that in the transfer to laptop type keyboards. Awkward seating positions, hot-desk type stuff. If I WFH again for a sustained period of time, I think I'll look into getting a better KB&M. -

Registered 9 years agoI really like my Black Widow Chroma, had a Black Widow before and picked up the Chroma genuinely because I wanted light up keys and the novelty of being able to customise all of them was enough to make me get the Chroma over the Black Widow Ultimate.
I type a lot of articles and play a lot of PC games and haven't had any trouble with double-tapping or anything like that, the old Black Widow that's a few years old now is still going strong and hasn't had a single fault. They feel really nice too, I've struggled with some of the stiffer keys on other mechanicals. Also having macro keys is useful if you do a lot of writing similar things over and over (like introductions to e-mails or usernames) -

Registered 17 years agoAnother Filco with brown switches here. I use it as my daily keyboard for coding at work and sometimes for gaming too. I love it and should I ever break it (and the way it's built that feels impossible) I would buy another in an instant.
If it was primarily for gaming I may have gone for red switches, but browns offer a happy medium. -
@MetalDog wow! I honestly never knew it was all so complicated and distinctive.
I remember using old ibm/icl mechanical keyboards many years ago, but since the membrane keyboards have taken over, I just thought the mechanical keyboards I'd seen recently were just specialist gaming boards, but wow, just how wrong was I!
