Civilization Revolution - 1000G/1000G Nice to play a strategy game that works so well on a console, even if it's greatly simplified compared to the PC versions of Civ. |

best cod i have played since mw1.
sp was fun and at last it actually looked pretty good. Shame it has hardly changed since mw1 though, there are a few sections that open up and allow you to use your new exo abilities. These are great and make you wish this was the whole sp but sadly most levels restrict your moves to ensure you stick to its tightly controlled plan...basically follow a a.i. team mate through some corridor.
still it is the best sp in the last few years of cod.
the audio in the campaign is 10/10, it is just amazing.
mp is the best since mw1, some terrible maps aside the movement and options given to you by the exo suit is liberating. I've finally managed to enjoy some cod mp after a few games of hating it. I detested mw3 mp, it was terrible. Now there is little camping and no bloody claymores and other such pathetic tools. No just running around with two guns like a headless chicken either.
game modes for the most part work far better now. Hardpoint is great and i love kill confirmed.
loadouts are better and how kill streaks are handled is improved, pretty much all the mp decisions are an improvement on mw3. I haven't played ghosts but all the other cods.
I've got to rank 36 in the mp now.
the co-op mode is okay but i don't see it being interesting for long.
overall it is a vast improvement and if it ditched the controlling elements in sp and had some more open map design it could become great in aw2.
7/10.
edit. I don't see why the campaign couldn't be co-op, that would have been brilliant and easily increased the score.

The Binding of Isaac Rebirth
I didn't get on well with original due to the controls and high level of difficulty, but I've enjoyed the remake. It works with a 360 controller and it's not as difficult. It's one of those games that has multiple different endings and needs many playthroughs to unlock all the characters, items, secrets and achievements. As it's a rogue like, one game might see you die on the first level and the next will see you make a great run. There are tons of 'weapons' to be discovered and they combine to make amusing combos at times. Anyway, having reached at least the first ending I'm happy to call it completed at a basic level.

Yeah, it's a simple but deep game and calling it truly, 100% completed would be an epic task. I'm calling it complete as there are plenty of other games that need my attention. I can see myself putting in a lot more hours but it's more 'sensible' for me to mark it up as done for now. Definitely a game to load up for a couple of goes when I have a spare 10 or 15 minutes. -

Best Single player campaign since CoD ditched WW2 in my opinion, it was actually okay and occassionally fun when it let you play around. However 90% of the time you are in very linear corridors, with AI team mates who seem to deliberately get in your way. It also was extremely shit that half the game I would run to the objective, the sit there waiting while my team mate very very slowly ambled up, all the while looking back over his shoulder saying "we need to go there." Despite me being there already and having to wait ages.
Check points also bizarely often kicked in BEFORE dialogue, so often I would reload, go make a coffee while the NPC slowly walked towards a door doing exposition, while I sat bored. Surely they could have made the checkpoint just before he opens the door and the action kicks off? This was especially annoying in the escape level where I died about 10 times and every time had to wait a good minute.
Despite these, it looked good, some of the gadgets were great, and there was the seed of a good game in there, the open levels were actually excellent at times, but there were not enough of them.
So Single player 7/10
I played multiplayer up until my guy got to level 30, but to be honest I just don't like the maps, and I can trade it in for £38 towards Halo (and I only paid £36 for it) so it goes. It is enjoyable, but not much better than Plants v Zombies and Titanfall so I may as well just stick with those. It says a lot that while I can remember Express, Hijacked, Plaza, Yemen and Raid 100% from Black Ops 2, I honestly can't name a single map that stood out in this. It was all so hectic and fast paced, with not a single point where I found a place I loved to try to dig in a bit. I have never been a sniper, but I love to try to claim a corner of the map as my own to run around in, and there was nothing like that. In fact I can't actually name a map, despite playing maybe 15 hours MP.
Oh, and it has the same issue that no one actually plays the game modes. In Kill confirmed (my favourite) I would regularly get a pretty even kill ratio, with 12 kills / deaths or so, but have 30 tags. Same goes in Hardpoint where even though I would finish mid table / low down, I would have by far the highest number of flags.

Graphics are very nice, a step up from even Battlefield 4 IMO. Was smooth as butter as well much improved from Ghosts. Excellent Soundstage superb with surround sound. Story was OK felt very short though and could have done with a couple more levels, best campaign since Black ops

I knew it'd be enjoyable from the recommendations by EGers, but it exceeded my expectation. Batman-like combat with Assassin's Creed style missions really mesh well, and there's plenty to do without feeling overwhelming. As you do more missions and get a feel for Mordor, there's a lot more personality to the game world than it initially appears. Like any good location, you get a feel for the optimum ways to move around.
The story is fine, but you could rush through in no time. That's the game characters story though, and it feels largely irrelevant. The real stories are those that you take part in yourself using the Nemesis system. It can feel really personal when an enemy gets a cheap shot off that kills you, making him become a Captain. There are a few achievements geared towards making you play about with this, but I ended up with most of them just from my own manipulations of the Orc chain of command.
Since all the inhabitants are Orcs, you don't have to worry about notoriety . You can wade in and kill indiscriminately. It really helps make it feel like you're free to be the Ranger or Wraith you want to be. I also liked that the optional objectives were actually optional. I hated those in Assassin's Creed, so having no progress percentage attached to them, plus them being fairly clear, lead to me actually doing them most of the time.
It took me about 32 hours to finish, but it's definitely the sort of game I'd go back to. I'd probably say it's my Game of the Year so far, which given the number of games I've really enjoyed lately is saying something. There wasn't much I felt they could do to improve it. There are a few powers that would be nice to tweak like manually targeting a branded Captain to pop the head off of instead of it popping every head in range, or a bit more enemy variety (Trolls, Easterings, maybe a Nazgul boss or something), but even without that it's excellent. The only thing I'd remove is the QTE executions for certain Captains.
9/10 (probably a personal 10 if they took out those QTEs) -

A lot of fun actually. The usual ho hokum, but certainly entertaining enough with it. I enjoyed it far more than I expected. I reckon sitting out the last two helped a lot.
Cut scenes were rather nice too. Can't wait to see this gen a few years down the line.
MP is as fun as ever with some maps more frustrating than others.

It'd actually be cool if you could take on Sauron too. I wouldn't mind mandatorily losing to him, if it were to distract him long enough for [insert important for some reason Macguffin] to happen.

Felt like a proper game more than most dlc, and brilliantly crafted into the story of the main game. It definitely ramps up the tension of the first game.
Very tense; the disfigured and psychopathic offspring of Condemned and Manhunt. Bring on Outlast 2.

I was really looking forward to this and completely put off by all the professional reviews. Due to regular peeps seemingly enjoying it I thought I'd give it a go.
It's now become one of my favourite games of the year. It's in no way a challenge but the whole experience leaves a cheesy grin on my face. In my opinion the best way to describe it is a gathering and creating game much like the professions in Wow with each role having achievements once completed level you up in said class.
Some simple things surprised me too like being able to warp around the world for quick exploration.
I can see how a lot of people wouldn't like it if you don't get that tingle of enjoyment everytime you find a rare material or monster.
Beautiful, delightful and happy.

I feel COD AW is a missed opportunity more than anything. It has some genuinely fun and intreasting items yet your only allowed to use them a set way in a set corridor.
A few times I see a ledge and think oh maybe I'll flank here then jump down there. However no your only allowed to run that set path. Also the random physics, some items move lovely and help immersion but other times you cannot even shoot a car window. -

I agree. The level towards the end in the fairly open area hinted at the potential of the possibilities of the combat. Likewise the graphics are very nice but if you look outside of where the game wants you to look things often look ropey -

I do love the ubisoft grind really. Collecting feathers / pirate chests / GPS signals / hacking stuff in their games has replaced World of Warcraft for my zoning out time. Sure it is padding, but for a destressing after work when you don't really want to have to think and concentrate on a game it is good stuff.

A clone of an amazing series that falls far short of the heights achieved by it's inspiration. It is generally challenging and it's interesting to walk slowly round intertwining passageways with a shield up trying to trade blows with an enemy. Problem is the camera gets in the way, enemies are generally quite cheap (especially late on in the game) and it all becomes a little frustrating.
The boss battles are fairly uninspiring but they offer you a nice bonus strategy to aim for - but only if you look at a guide first - in order to get a special weapon with added bonus'. That leads to the weapons, I got by 90% of the game with either an axe or hammer. The greatxxx weapons are too slow for the enemies they designed so are pretty redundant and the quick weapons do so little damage I'd still be fighting the bosses.
The narrative is awful, as is the voicework and the animation in the cut-scenes, but thankfully they can be skipped. Side quests and keys found are very obtuse and I often had to check a guide to see what random door the key I just found may open.
All in, it was enjoyable, but, if you love Souls you will likely find the flaws in this quite frustrating, including the weapon balance, simple strategies and enemy similarity.

Fun, old school fps. Health packs, ridiculous weapons (all with alt fire modes), locked doors till you've killed all the enemies, the whole works. It's a glorious combination of silliness, violence and childish humour, delivered by a series of one liners and set pieces.
Looks good for the most part, sharp and full of stunning vistas. Sometimes it looks like an up-rezzed last gen game, and there is the occasionally dropped frame or tear.
It does get a little repetive, but usually the setting and weaponry keeps it interesting. The loading times are long too, not great if you keep dying and have to restart.

Completion time: just short of 16 hours.
Contains spoilers:
So I started of In a graveyard where angels fell from the sky, fell on a car which later collides with a plane which you end up beating the living shit out of angels in midair. I then went to an ancient city in Europe where I got attacked by a floating baby face dragon thing whereupon you learn to walk up walls in the moonlight , on further exploration you stumble upon lava filled pits which erupt all around you as you beat the living shit out of more angels. A bigger baby face thing with tentacles attempts to kill you, but you then discover you can turn into a super fast long jumping panther. You then board a plane where you fight a woman on a motorbike after you ripped through highways on motorbikes before you then get fired at a island at a million miles an hour on a missile which you beat the living shit out of more angels. You Land on an island which has more rockets than a missile enthusiast when he realised he is has too many rockets, and actually the island is a rocket ship which fires into space which you catch a ride on via a motorbike in mid air. What's waiting? a 100ft shiva esq statue which you end up piloting into the sun. That's how my afternoon went mum.
It's mental and fun.
And it rides it well through the entire 16 hours i spent with it. Combat is,precise and got great depth and theres variety in the challenges at await you. It took me a while to get used to it. One moment I was awesome, next moment I got my arsed kicked. This can lead to frustrating moments, but you pull through. You have to, at least attempt to , learn various styles of combat and it's move roster to basically get anywhere in the game, and I liked that. More than mindless button mashing.
Story is a bit all over the place, but the world as a good lore which I enjoyed delving into. Sound and graphics are good. Some of the environments were breathtaking. As a couple of dodgy sections , and Some QuickTime events happen too quick and result in lower scores or being pummelled.
Aside from that a good 8/10 -

A wonderful environment ruined by a plethora of little bugs, glitches and a terrible framerate that add up to a frustrating experience. The assassinations at first feign something deeper along the lines of Hitman, with multiple ways to get to and take down your target. But that facade is quickly broken down and you will quickly realise there isn't really much variation in how you can approach them (other than the entry into a base/compound).
The co-op missions are also a bit of a missed opportunity. With the stealth being such a shambles, it doesn't really pay to split up and take down targets and objectives from multiple angles. The missions themselves also feel a bit tacked on and unimportant,, which is strange considering the title of the game and the focus the multiplayer has had prior to release.
I can't help but feel that year after year, these games are such a missed opportunity. If Ubisoft realised why other stealth games like Metal Gear and The Last of Us worked so well and adopted a few of the mechanics those games use to make the quiet approach feel so satisfying, they'd immediately improve these games tenfold.
On the plus side, the city is the best they have ever made, there is a diversity to the activities that Assassin's Creed has never had with some really interesting side quests and the co-op, in the rare occasions when everything works as it should, can be fantastic. The story was decent enough but I don't like how they marginalised the present day stuff to keep milking it and teasing some sort of payoff in future games. I wish they'd just tie up that end of things with some sort of conclusion so they can get to doing what they do best, beautifully recreating significant historical eras.

Felt more like an actual war rather than a series of set pieces like more recent cods. Enjoyed the guns and both the american and Russian campaign, bit rough around the edges though. Would be good if with 3 studios now we could have a past, present and future cod, won't happen though

A very gorgeous game to look at with a cute premise. Unfortunately the game never really goes anywhere interesting in terms of plot and gameplay. The gameplay in particular is constantly marred by how horribly the playable character (Dawn) controls. Almost as if she's constantly walking on ice - quite unpleasant. Phasing in and out of shadows is fun but it just never really reaches a pinnacle where the player feels their knowledge of this mechanic is being tested. It's all rather twee and safe in that regard.
At least the game for the most part looks gorgeous despite being not particularly interesting to actually interact with. Hmm, that makes it sound like a really bad game, which it's not. It's just rather average...
