Just finished.
It was okay, even good sometimes. But it was ruined by having far too many icons etc on the map. Everything just became such a drag. I think with less to do I would play another 20 hours, but it looks like there is 40 more which just is too tedious. I loved the first 10 riddles I did, then it started to get tedious. I loved the first 10 murders I investigated.. then it started to drag. I did every chest in 3 district (apart from the app ones)... then it started to drag. I enjoyed the first 7 rifts I did... Then it started to drag,
You get the point.
Unlike Black Flag where post finish I enjoyed finding all the secrets and collectibles this is just... tedious and drags.
Plot wise I have no idea what happened, it made no sense and jumped around insanely. I didn't like any of the characters, and I found the free running hampered by superglue ledges.
HOWEVER it has so much potential, the crowds, the buildings, the scale, the return to actual assassination missions were all impressive and I did enjoy myself at times. I think if they kept the same variety of missions, but had less of them, this would have been an 8 or even a 9. But the sheer bloat takes it down to a 7 for me.
And fucking hell, that would have been a 4 going by the bit I played while the patch was downloading. -

Good game but a shallow main quest and repetitive side missions, a solid 7.5/10.
Infamous First Light
Really fun, zipping around the city was a joy, some great missions, the surveillance mission was ace and loved getting to see more of Fetch's back story. Excellent DLC 8.5/10.
TLOU Left Behind
Brilliant, beautiful, emotional, too short. 9.5/10 -

Finally managed to get 2048 in... 2048. Threes I think it is also called. I picked it up after the EG game of the year recomendation.
26796 points, with a 2046, a 512, 256 and 128 tiles showing.

Pretty much what iphone / android games should be. Simple, addictive, puzzle game with no in app purchases or walled off content shit. -

Had to delete Threes! off of my phone in the end as the addition was becoming slightly absurd. Getting 2048 for the first time was a surprisingly tense moment; one tiny mistake was all it took to bugger it up.
... fantastic game though, and it is a great shame that Apple allowed the obvious - and atrocious - copycat clone 2048 onto the app store as a 'freemium' thus knocking Threes! down the paid chart a little bit too swiftly. -

Finally got round to finishing this off. I don't know if it's because I played it fairly close to finishing 3 but it felt really wooden and awkward, from the delivery of dialogue, to the combat. I'm a completionist so it got a little stake for me doing the Mako missions and subsequently put it on the backburner for the best part of a year. I started back and was quite far into the story, just after being docked on the Citadel (which was a horrible hub) , so the story really began to gather speed.
I love the story, ME2 was my introduction to the series, so it was nice to see everything fall into place. But for the execution of all the games attributes it's a 7/10 for me.
Already started 2, which for me is the best in the series. I can already feel the difference on how sharp everything is, the combat is better, then presentation is better, the score is better and the VO's are years ahead of the first.

There are some die hard rpg fans who will insist that ME1 was the best in the series, but I'm with you that the improved combat made ME2 the better game.
I still have an unopened copy of 3, but no time to finish Shepherd's tale; the mixed reception has put me off slightly as I didn't want to spoil my memories of the first 2... -

GP: 350, lots to still see and do, I will do a few activities but that is as far as it goes.
Lots to enjoy about the game, as it has been said many times before, if you liked Black Flag you will like this.
The naval/ship combat is brilliant and very rarely gets old. I prefer the upgrading of properties in the previous games however.
The mission structure was defo a step in the right direction with less insta-death and trailing missions, however controlling Shay was as fucked up as always when playing the AC series.
The amount of times I jumped off something in the wrong direction or climbed something I didn't want to climb when chasing someone down was well into double figures very early on in the game.
I liked the nods to the previous games and meeting some familiar faces/avatars
I also enjoyed the fact the end was In Paris
I think I'm looking forward to playing Unity in the next couple of weeks... -

Registered 17 years ago@evild_edd I would be one of those who thinks the first game is the best. The second game was far slicker but I missed the more open levels, far greater granularity on leveling skills, the Mako and for me the best story. Also the best bad guy in Saren.
While the first game was rough around the edges what they did after that is rather than refine the formula they simplified the whole game and made it a far more linear experience. For that reason the first game will always be the best one for me. It had ambition that was thrown out for a game experience that would appeal to a wider audience.

hehe, what you said reminds me of Bioshock infinite; they created gameplay systems in the first one to complicate the task required of the player. Then in Infinite, leave them in, but automate them. What's the point.
It's so long since I played so I can't remember the actual mechanics I'm on about, but believe you me, it's a very good point.

Registered 7 years ago@evild_edd Honestly I don't know if it is. On both games you're on set paths and you're free to do missions (to an extent) in the order you please. The Mako sections in 1 were awful IMHO, every environment was a copy and paste job. The missions in ME2 are much more streamlined.
ME3 was a fine game. Probably a little too combat focused in the campaign, whereas ME2 got the balance right. But it's a great, epic story that has a questionable ending. -

Registered 16 years agoWhile I hated the ME3 ending, and felt it was poorly written and an insult to the epic brilliance of the events throughout the series leading up to that point as well as to everything the series stood for in it's gameplay and narrative, even then I still refuse to watch the extended cut.
The ending was the ending, as shit as it was. The extended cut was the start of a slippery slope towards pandering creative content to every entitled demanding cunt with a whiny voice. Bioware should have left it be, sucked it up, and admitted they bottled it.

I much preferred ME2 to ME1. Granted the main story might not have been as good, but I found the character's side stories more interesting than in the first game.
Still haven't played ME3. I've been tempted to pick up the series again for my PC, but the lack of controller support puts me off. There are some old games I've re-acquired for my PC and using a mouse when I've been used to a controller just feels weird at times. -

Registered 17 years ago@the_milkybar_kid And imagine if instead of throwing out the whole Mako parts from ME1 they had actually done justice to the idea of proper planet exploration in ME2? That's what I was expecting them to do not just dump the whole idea.
As for the missions there were a few different paths you could take within the main missions which is something that totally disappeared in ME2. I don't claim the missions were massively open but in ME2 they were just shooting corridors.
ME2 is still a good game I was just expecting them to improve on everything and even add more over ME1 where instead they decided to cut stuff. ME2 definitely improves on aspects of ME1 but also lost bits I think should have been further developed.

Registered 16 years ago@glaeken Indeed. Instead of improving the elements that were underdeveloped or flawed, Bioware just removed them totally. Which is really disappointing when looking at the potential simple iteration could have fostered.
It seems to be their studio style when developing sequels. Instead of 'iterate and expand', it's 'remove and replace'. And nearly always it leads to less depth.

Registered 7 years agoNeed for Speed: Most Wanted (2012, PS3)
Developer(s) Criterion Games
Publisher(s) Electronic Arts
Unbelievably, this is the 19th Need For Speed game and they are still going strong and show no signs of slowing down. EA no longer make the games though, they have given that right to the creators of the only other arcade racer that is better than NFS, the Burnout series, UK based company Criterion Games! And my aren’t EA proud of that fact, the games slogan is actually “a Criterion Game” and is actually bigger than the words “Need for Speed” on the case, almost like they rather people knew this was a Criterion game than a Need for Speed game.
Still, the game has some decent critical acclaim. Following its release, the game won several awards including the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards for Best Driving Game and was nominated for Best British Game and Best Online Multiplayer at the 2013 BAFTA Awards, and was repeatedly recognized as the best driving/racing game of 2012 by several outlets. Well, colour me impressed!
VISUALS
I have to admit the game is rather gorgeous. Fairhaven, the fictional City within you race around in, is a cool looking city with plenty to explore. The game also has a day/night cycle with weather effects to boot…well rain anyway. The cars look beautiful, so much so that you will go to a garage to repair your car, not to improve performance but because it’s a damn crime to have your Lamborghini Gallardo to have a scratch on it, never mind it looking like it has been through Street Fighter ‘Bonus’ stage.
However, it isn’t perfect. The cars never really get totalled and smashed up like they do in the Burnout series. I think this has something to do with the licenses and it sucks, if you manage to damage the bonnet, on certain cars, in certain camera angles you can see there is no engine under there, just a grey blur. I wanna see the car get mangled when getting T-boned by a competitor or police car. There also isn’t any nice interior shots of the cars, it’s not needed but it’s always nice/depressing to see inside a car you could never avoid. I would also like more variance in the weather, how about storms or snow? A bit of drizzle just doesn’t cut it these days. Another small gripe is the lack of humans in the game, it’s supposed to be a living breathing city, so where is everyone? I know it would be far more hassle than it’s worth to include pedestrians but it does hamper the immersion somewhat.
The game looks rather nice…but it could look better with a little more effort.
7/10

The cars are very sexy and great to stare at, almost too good too race!
SOUND
The engines sound mint, I loved getting into a new car and just hearing to see if the car was a screamer or roared like a lion. The music is ok but could of done with letting you use music off your hard drive.
Not much else to judge though, engines roar, tires screech, glass smashes and the same police officer talks over the radio…I guess he really hates you!
7/10
GAMEPLAY
Where do I start, there is a lot of ground to cover. I’ll start positively. The game did reignite my love for racing games, the adrenaline you get from flying past the competition at super high speeds before drifting around a corner before hitting the straight again…and hitting the nitrous button, it's almost drug like. Each car feels different, the Audi A1 Clubsport is a mentally fun car that is like a go cart but with 500 BHP, the Bentley Continental Supersports is an absolute tank and handles like one too while the Bugatti Veyron is simply too fast for street racing but is near to perfection as can be. As far as the car handling is concerned, I don’t really have any issues, Criterion did a cracking job. I also liked the Autolog system, it basically tells you every race time your friends got on all the races in the game and encourages you to beat them. It’s a great way to make single player competitive with your friends without having to go online and actually racing them. You do get a great sense of satisfaction when you see that you were the quickest on a certain race out of all your friends.
It’s just a shame then that the rest of the game is dragged down by some, what I think, critical flaws. First off the game is an open World racer. Now Burnout Paradise had this and it kind of worked but in that game you had to get from A to B before the other racers. As you got to learn the map, you would know all the little secret shortcuts and all the best routes. NFS:MW on the other hand inexplicably breaks that system by including regular checkpoints. So in a sprint race you have to go through all the checkpoints or you will fail the race, you go through a shortcut you found earlier, you fail the race, you cut a certain corner and you fail a race. Why have an open World and then force you to only take a certain route!? It goes against the whole idea of having an open World in the first place.
To make things worse, the game doesn’t really tell you which way to go. So if a checkpoint is out of eyeshot, you have to look at your tiny RADAR in the bottom corner of the screen. So you’re speeding down the road at 200 mph and you have to take your eyes off the road to look at a tiny map on the bottom of the screen to get a small idea of where to go. This means taking your eyes off the other competitors, the aggressive police cars, the traffic and any other obstacles in your way. And because the RADAR doesn’t have great range, you can only really see about a 100 metres in front so you’re constantly taking your eyes off the road to check your tiny little map, cue 100’s of crashes.

A good example here, he needs to take his next right, however if he doesn't look at his RADAR he will drive straight on and miss his checkpoint...if he was racing.
The aggressive police I mentioned earlier are annoying as fuck. They fly from every angle and basically try and kill you, it sounds like crazy fun and it can be…but for the most part, it’s just annoying. So annoying in fact that if I finished a race and the police were still chasing me, I would just park my car and let them ‘Bust’ me. There are no repercussions and in fact I was actually rewarded after getting arrested a certain amount of times. Plus they continuously try and use spike strips on you, sometimes in inescapable circumstances, which can of course lose you the race…even more infuriating when you realize the AI competitors you race against never seem to get flat tyres.
Ah yes the AI competitors. If there is one thing that irks me more than anything else in a racing game, it’s rubber band AI. If you don’t know what that is, basically if you get in 1st place then no matter what you do or how well you race, the AI will keep up, catch up and overtake…but it’s also the same in reverse, if you mess up and crash then the other competitors will slow down for you, giving you chance to catch up. So it’s kind of like fixed racing. You could race like a speed demon until the final lap, crash once and come last. Then you could drive like a blind man with no arms and then race ‘ok’ in the final lap and come 1st. Is it really a racing game when the game basically decides if you win or not, regardless of skill? The ‘Most Wanted’ races were the worst examples, they were basically one on one racers with the next to unlock car. You would smash them up and leave them for dead at 200mph, then you look at your RADAR only to see a black triangle moving at what looks like 250mph+ towards you and then overtaking you…a speed no car can do in the game. It’s just ridiculous and you may as well not try for the first ¾ of any race and then put your foot down for the final leg. So…not really racing then, just driving fast with someone who is basically toying with you.
The game may of re-ignited my love for the genre but damn it’s a bit of a broken mess. All of it avoidable too.
5/10
NARRATIVE
Erm, a lady tells me that there are 10 racers who I need to beat because they are the best, they are the ‘Most Wanted’. So, not really a story here…not that I would expect or want one.
1/10
VERDICT
I haven’t played the multiplayer in all its glory, so it maybe a bit unfair to rate the game when I haven’t played, from what I hear, the strongest aspect. However from what I played of the SP, there could be an excellent game here but it needs a LOT of fixing. The game annoyed me more than it excited me and that’s just not good enough, especially for a series on its 19th game made by a company that is supposed to be on top of its game. Disappointing and doesn’t give me much hope for the future, seeing as it sold and reviewed well.

I found myself looking forward to the end of the work day not to get home but to play some Duke Nukem on my commute.
It's aged really well. Good mix of enemy types, interstibg weapon variety, excellent level design and lots of side strafing goodness. The ammo count for each weapon is fairly low which forces you to use all the weapons at your disposal (rather than horde the good ones) which is nice.
Also it's good to play a game that's not streamlined and focus tested to within an inch of its life. For example, some levels you can use your jet pack and skip whole sections if you want. It's totally unscripted too, there's no RPG caches telling you that a boss encounter is coming up. You might find yourself encountering a boss with just your shotgun. Suck it down.
Interesting to reflect on how I viewed the tits and ass content as a 12 year old compared to now.
Loses one point because the weapon select didn't work on Vita. No toggle so you had to cycle through each weapon to get the one you wanted

Pretty good. Very much like Second Son, with tighter gameplay and more focused missions. Just the one power (speed) which is good, as you really get to grips with it and the city is well designed to race around. Fair amount to do and collect, although I couldn't really be arsed and just blasted through the story. Kept my attention for 4 hours or so. -
I know I'm in the minority here, but the first Mass Effect game is dogshit. It has a great story and setting, sure, but as an actual gme, it's complete rubbish.
ME2 is one of my favourite games of last gen, everything fell into place for it, amazing experience.
ME3 is an enjoyable romp, found myself focusing n the characters' stories instead of the overall, much more fun that way.
Oh, ME1 did coe out on disc on the PS3, but onl as part of the Trilogy boxset. -

Registered 14 years agoME2 is easily the best. Dumbed down perhaps, but slick and polished and seeing your decisions carried over was pretty novel at the time.
The original was probably the second best. Lots of filler, exploring empty planets and identikit labs and spaceships was boring, but the main story missions were mostly great.
The third game didn't graphically or mechanically feel much different to the second to me, but the story and particularly the ending were fairly weak and it just wasn't as engaging imo, so I guess that was the worst. They were all at least 9/10's though.
Oh, and I haven't completed any games recently. -
Red Faction: Guerrilla (PC)
Demolishing the environment is great fun and it feels more purposeful than in Red Faction: Armageddon, but still it just doesn't really add an interesting dimension to the gameplay like it did with the original Red Faction. Other than that, the game is pretty average in every regard although I did rather enjoy the AT-ST with rocket launchers and some of the martian environments are nice (although one of them - Oasis - is pretty darn ugly)
7/10 - blow shit up
