Gone Home One of those games I picked up in a sale and never got around to. Just played it in one sitting and loved every second. The atmosphere is just spot on throughout and by the end of the game the house felt an entirely different space to when I arrived. The story maybe tried a little too hard in places but overall I thought it was great. It's hard to talk about without potentially spoiling for others so I'll just say that if you like Dear Esther or games where exploration and discovery are your thing over combat, Gone Home is brilliant. 9/10 |

Registered 17 years ago@iamslick I don't think I gave the first game a fair chance looking back on it. I got distracted by something else and just never went back to it. Still I really enjoyed 2 so maybe I will give 1 another shot. -
Shovel Knight
What a great little game. It's very well designed game with an insane level of polish. The NES references were plenty, but subtle. I was constantly telling my girlfriend "Oh, that's from Castlevania. And that's from Zelda! That's a Mega Man reference!" etc...
Mechanically, it's what I crave from gaming. A simple control set-up that's both reliable and straight forward, allowing you to focus on the challenges each level provides, rather that the controls themselves.
The achievements are very much welcome, too. A lot of games offer achievements that require you to complete mundane tasks, but the majority of those in Shovel Knight are worth aiming for if you ever intend to play the game more than once (as I do).
If you've yet to play Shovel Knight, but you're a fan of NES platformers, just buy it. You're not going to be disappointed.

Do you mind if I politely ask how long it took you to complete Shovel Knight?
... I have got Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones, SteamWorld Dig (replaying this on the Wii U after originally completing the game on my 3DS two summers ago) and The Swapper to get on with before I eventually move onto Shovel Knight for good.
I love this little gif:

p.s. This website is absolutely woeful for embedding gifs in a modern, universal and 21st century manner therefore I give up trying to do so and have chucked in a link to said gif instead.

@CharlieStCloud 5 hours and 10 minutes, with an 87% item completion rate.
There is an achievement for completing the game in an hour and a half, which is very much possible if you're wanting to blast your way through the game, but you wont. Not on your first play through.
Edit - Sounds like you've got a solid list of games to play through, though. Stealth Inc is a brilliant game, too. Longer than Shovel Knight, but well worth your time. I'm about to play through Steamworld Dig again, too.

Nearly gave up on this so many times (even though it's only a 2 hour game), not due to frustration, but because it's so feckin tense! I thought Alien:Isolation was scarier than the main Outlast game, but this DLC somehow topped that. It's a good little game, but I'm now hoping that the upcoming sequel picks a totally different environment away from a mental institute. They've nailed the horror movie atmosphere perfectly, would love to see the devs now take that knowledge to a less-cliché setting.

Got slated in the reviews but I think it looks really nice and it plays really well. Not very challenging in terms of finishing the levels, but challenging in terms of maxing out your level collectables stars/flowers/coins. Nowhere near as bad as its made out to be.

Thought it was decent, really fun especially the irreverent humour and fourth wall breaking elements. Looks great, loads of detail and lovely effects.
I did feel like there are too many currencies (7 I think) and the badges, over drives and amps were unessecarily complicated and had only a passing effect on the gameplay.
Ultra mega hyper totally awesome super pigeon combo / 10

An amazing little puzzle game, has atmosphere in bucket loads and the puzzles do get harder near the end but when it clicks, its a great feeling. Iirc it was made by uni students and they did so much with a limited budget. The story is pretty good although quite odd. Also it was free on PSN+

Bought this by accident thinking it was singularity after hearing how its underated. Average shooter all round difficulty is all off as the game gets easier as you progress. Very stylish but at times the lens flare is overdone literally couldn't see a thing at times at least it only cost me 3 quid

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
After finishing the first game I had to give the sequel another go. It's a much needed improvement in terms of controls and level design. The visuals a great for the most part, though some zones are a little uninspired. The music doesn't come close to the original, either.
Having said that, it's much more enjoyable to play than the first game and it holds up rather well against modern platforming efforts.
Now it's time to give the third game another go. I never played it as a kid, but I had to abandon my first attempt when it was released on the 3DS. The jump mechanic reminded me of my very first efforts in game development with Flash.

@Kay That's the one. It's very similar to Super Mario Land 2, but that jump mechanic drove me nuts. The rest of it was fine, but that really put me off. -

Although it borrows pretty much everything from Mario 3d world its nothing short of excellent. The mechanics are simple but allow for some excellent puzzles and while they wont leave you scratching your head, the added objectives in the level give the game longevity.
As Mario 3d, its stunning to look at, animation is top notch and the music comes from 3d world as well.
Only negative is that the game just needed more levels, co-op play could have been added and some more zoom levels on the action, as it is though its an excellent platform to build on if they shoot for a sequel.

Not sure how much of a game there was to it, in retrospect, I just followed along with the prompts. However the story, characters, art style were most excellent.
I really enjoyed the first part, looking forward to the next episode. It's my first TT game so with my limited time for gaming a nice bitesize episode was most welcome.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
I must admit, I underrated this game. There's a lot of charm. Whether it's from small things like being able stick to the ceiling with the horned hat, that winged hat that allows you to jet across distant gaps, or with the amusing end-game results. It's also a generously-sized platformer with plenty of interesting stages and cheeky secrets.
However, that jump. It's bizarre. It's enough to sour the experience. Besides being stiff, if you figure out that you can jump higher whilst holding up, you can practically jump your way through entire stages without trouble. The game has next to no challenge as a result. That and the bosses lack any real challenge, too.
3/5
I'm very much interested in trying the other Wario Land games, now. Whether or not I do, though, depends on whether or not they fixed that darned jump! -

Yes that's its official name, sounds like a boxing game rip off. I used to love playing football manager games, my favourite was playing 2 player on LMA Manger on the PS2, spent countless hours playing them. However I haven't played any since those glory days so my itch to play one just got bigger and bigger...even considered installing a version on my work computer! Then I saw this on Google Play for free and HAD to have it.
Now the game does have in-app purchases, but everything is achievable without them. However, straight away I'm told I can not pick a top league football team unless I'm a level 10 Manager or I pay 99p for a Managers Badge that lets me manage any club in the World. So I picked Nottingham Forest.
My first season was great. You get 3 types of currency:
Pounds - This is what you use to buy players and pay their wages with.
Cash - This is used to hire back room staff
Tokens - Finally, these are used to help build better facilities.
Get ready to see this screen a LOT, it's the home screen. very easy to navigate and use.
Of course you can buy more pounds/cash/tokens using real money...but I never found the need to. So anyway, I was Forest and despite a shockingly low wage budget I managed to finished 2nd in the League and get promoted.
The next season, my budget felt almost limitless and bought some cracking players for my squad. However there was a price for this, the board told me the minimum they expected me to achieve was a place in the Europa League! You shitting me!? It's a ridiculous goal that I of course didn't achieve and so I got sacked. Which pissed me off and tbh was the nail in the coffin for me to stop playing.
You see I had problems before this. Cash and Tokens are in short supply and even when I tried to buy some more with one of their special deals (I know, I'm a mug for even contemplating giving them money), it wouldn't accept my money! The training part of the game just doesn't work, like literally, you can't press any of the buttons. The Boards expectations are beyond ridiculous. The game makes you deal with the contracts before the new season, which kinda makes sense but did me over on both seasons as the first season I had no budget to negotiate with current players wanting to leave, so I had to let them go...for then to get the budget I needed a week later. Then at the end of the second season, I spent 15 minutes sorting out contracts and then the board sacked me.
The game does feel a bit half finished and unfair that you don't really have any control on how well your team does, although that comes with the genre. I think for something that didn't cost me a penny, I'm pretty impressed and tempted to go again now that I have that badge and can pick any team I like. But I don't think I can be arsed. Ok game, fantastic value.

Playing this as part of the Master Chief Collection reminded me exactly why it convinced me to buy a 360 after a marathon playthrough round my friend's house back in 2007.
It's still easily the best Halo campaign, with brilliant variety in the amazing setpieces on each level. Even the weak Cortana level isn't that bad compared to some of the dreadful levels other games in the series have. Also during this playthrough I had the added bonus of actually understanding what was going on with the plot as I've played the previous games this time!

Gone Home
More an interactive fiction than a regular gaming experience. It effectively blends hopes, dreams and the mundane, every day things that make up life into an interesting story. An enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and will perhaps stir up memories of places you've lived and things you've done in the past.

Registered 15 years agoMetal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Huge MGS fan so not sure why it's taken me this long to get around to playing Ground Zeroes. There's not a whole lot to it; main mission takes about 2 hours but could probably be finished in 30 minutes. I ended up enjoying the Extra Ops, and the PS-exclusive Déja Vu mission, more than the main mission. I liked all of the changes to the MGS formula, especially the time freeze second chance you're given when spotted by an enemy. I'm now incredibly excited for the Phantom Pain, gutted it probably won't be out until the end of the year. Would have liked more story and much less exposition through found tapes. That story-telling device is becoming way overused in videogames and it just seems really lazy. 7/10
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD
Got the MGS HD Collection last year but didn't play through Peace Walker because I'd already played it on PSP. Enjoyed Ground Zeroes so much I decided to give the HD edition a go. It's much easier than I remember it being on PSP, probably because the the DualShock is a massive improvement over the PSP. In fact, a lot about this game seems much less impressive on a console. The story is largely incoherent. Sheer implausibility of the nuclear deterrence stuff was jarring. (also, Snake knows the Boss didn't betray her country because Eva explained her mission very clearly at the end of MGS3; why is Snake haunted by doubt over this during PW, then?). Dialogue was pretty dire at times. I got the impression the writers just translated all of the humour directly from Japanese and it didn't work. The game areas seem very small on console. That said, I did enjoy the story but mainly for its continuity with MGS3, which is one of my favourite game ever. Mother Base management never became tedious, side quests were great and the boss fights were cool. I'm glad MGSV will be expanding on the changes to the series made in PW because, overall and despite the limitations of the PSP, it's a great game. 8/10 -

Took far longer than i expected. I got side-tracked with other stuff and get less time to play I suppose.
Was enjoyable enough with a bit too much to do. I miss the FC2 map etc although the diamond tracking missions were a nice link back.
Thankfully, the characters were slightly less hateful than in 3, although Yogi & Reggie can do one. Not doing everything, but hunting, exploring, the wingsuit & buzzer were fun.

Terrifying for the first half and interesting enough to continue once the horror fades a bit.

A MUST PLAY for fans of the main games. It expands on the story in nice ways and although it repeats tricks from the base game for about an hour it has moments which surpass the base game by a considerable margin. I will not be sleeping well tonight.
