You can run the full version of Minecraft on one of these cheap w8 tablets can you not? -

Registered 16 years agoI'm drawn to one for all those reasons although I have a nagging feeling I'm probably making life difficult for myself.
Parental controls on W8 are surely as good as it gets, no?
I'm not that savvy at the moment but intend to build myself a decent windows machine fairly soon. Currently running a rather old mac.

While windows is alot more flexible for adults I think you are better with Android for a 9 year old. Less chance of her messing around with it if she can only access the play store. (let's not get into side loading)
Sure you can use security and administration stuff on Windows but for the sake of simplicity just stick with android. Do you really need the full suite of proper programs when all she will do is a bit of browsing and little games?
Look at what she wants to do then look at the costs and bargains you find. Ultimately you can't go wrong with either.

That's an interesting point DB, I hadn't really thought about the education side. -

Registered 16 years agoMy wife's got an iPad so she's used to that, its not exactly small and light.
I'm keen on her getting a bit more involved and if its the same as the main pc I think she'd find that reassuring.
I'd assume we'd also be able to share software over both systems and that's also appealing. -

Registered 16 years agoYou can but that involves putting the tablet down on a table or whatever.
Most people who get a tablet want to have it on their lap on the sofa or on the train etc.
I use my laptop for playing keyboard and Moise games because actually trying to balance a tablet on your lap with a keyboard is impossible. -

Registered 16 years agoIts the flexibility I like. She can download apps if she wants, or she can use it as a small pc.
Is the app store the same for phone and desktop?

Registered 18 years agoI bought the Linx 7 on a whim and love it, it's far more capable then I thought it'd be, my missus has always wanted a Windows tablet but the screen was too small for her.
So just bought the LInx 10 for the missus and she loves that she can play the games she's used to on her PC, and also the touchscreen stuff on the store.
I have an iPad Air and Fire HD (and have owned lots of Android tablets over the years) - but these are incredible for the money, best of both worlds. The buid quality is better than you'd expect, the touchscreen is responsive. It's impressive how well Win 8 runs with the 1GB RAM in the Linx 7. -

Windows RT and Windows (full) share the same store, but windows phone has its own. Kind of the opposite of the Apple system as tablet and desktop are together with phone separate. -

Really like my Linx 8. Bought it so my daughter could have a PC of her own for homework etc. and it works brilliantly with Word, Chrome, YouTube and all the other stuff that's useful for that sort of thing. Nice that I can carry around my Steam library too.
The biggest criticism I have is battery life. 3-4 hrs is actually pretty good considering what it can run but in standby it still drains a significant amount of power. That means that if it is not plugged in all the time, the next time you want to use it the battery may be dead. Yes, we could switch it completely off every time but that's hardly convenient.
Not a deal breaker but it's very easy to forget, especially if you have been using USB for something else like M&K or a controller. Could have been a non-issue if the USB port had been clever enough to allow a charging current through a hub or splitter (some other tablets do this), or even if it had a secondary charging method. -
