Doesn't look like there's a thread about amiibo so let's talk about them here: which ones are available, compatible games, how much money you've squandered on them etc. Amiibo Line up: http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/line-up/ Compatible games: http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/line-up/#/games Edited by Mr-Zoo at 10:58:50 05-02-2015 |

Registered 17 years agoOn a recent trip to Japan it was only the lack of luggage that stopped me filling my boots. £6 each it worked out at.
Currently rocking Mario and Link. Got my eye on Captain Toad in the next batch, and Yoshi in the current batch.
Seems to make next to fuck all difference to games. Super Smash Bros. Wii U already has more modes than I know what to do with.

I saw there's going to be a Toad amiibo but didn't know about Captain Toad! He looks great with his rucksack and head torch. -

Registered 16 years agoWhy would anyone spend any money on them? Silly plastic models. I did get Samus with GAME reward points, and Smash Bros came with Mario, but apart from that I'm done. Also I bought Wii Fit Trainer as a prank, Villager as a goof, Pit just to make sure I wasn't buying too many figures, Link for Hyrule Warriors, Diddy Kong because I don't know why and my sister bought me Kirby for Christmas. But once I've bought the rest of the, I'm definitely done.
Handy chart for released games:

I'm not telling you how many I have.
I'm stopping after megaman though. Well, maybe Toad, but definitely not doubling up on figures I already have even if they are in new pose. -
But they're for the kids, right? -
Yep, I have 3 kids so erm..... -

Registered 18 years agoQuestion: I've not jumped on the Amiibo bandwagon yet, despite owning a Wii U. I don't play it much to be fair. However, now I have a new 3DS which does have the NFC gubbins in it so is it worth throwing money at this? Note, I am not interested in Super Smash Bros.
Also, I'm off to Hong Kong in a few weeks, can I get different Amiibos out there to European ones? -

Registered 17 years agoDifferent packaging (Chinese lettering, innit) but I believe the hardware and available models are all the same.
Certainly what I saw in Japan was identical to what I saw in the UK. HongKong import stores here in Shanghai also have much the same stuff.
If you don't have a need, an urge, a deep desire to possess one then it's just gonna be a hunk of plastic that sits in a drawer.

Registered 16 years agoThe same ones are release everywhere, though stock levels differ from place to place. For Smash Bros, they basically store an AI and upgrades for a copy of that character, so it depends how much that appeals too you. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, I went to your handy link DFawkes and watched the vids. The fact that all the people in the video seemed under 16 told me I should keep my wallet closed! -
Too expensive for me to even consider. -
Any upcoming 3ds title is pretty sure to have some sort of amiibo stuff included. I wouldn't be surprised if they patch Mario Kart 7 on 3ds to include the uniforms available in the Wi version.
If you buy most first party stuff on 3ds and Wii U then having a few amiibo adds a bit of fun. You could say that it's essentially physical dlc that works on more than one game. They also look good and if you have kids you should probably buy a few amiibo. -

Registered 17 years agoI don't have any yet, but have Sonic on preorder. -
I noted on the ND that they're talking about them in terms of series e.g. the Smash Bros series, so I suppose that indicates there will be various series related models released in the future. -

Registered 15 years agoI hadn't even thought of getting one before, but now I've preordered a New 3DS I have a silly urge to get one

In all seriousness, I'm stopping once smash bros collection is done. It's just too expensive to collect any more after that. -
Except for Toad, I shall have Toad. -
I'm pre-ordering toad, soon as he's available. Will also get Yoshi, Kirby, and Tom Nook, if they do an Animal Crossing Wii U and related amiibo which seems very likely. -

Registered 14 years agoI've bought a few but in my opinion they're a bit naff.
Until they release something that can make more of an impact on gameplay I don't think I'll get any more.
My son loves them though which is most important. I guess

Registered 15 years agoWhat kind of impact do they actually have on gaming? Is it really just to unlock new costumes and shit? -

Registered 17 years agoI dunno - they're as much collectables as functional items. The Disney Infinity stuff is the same (if not worse, really) and that's the market this is in.
Not sure what you'd have been expecting them to do? -

Registered 17 years agoI don't know how to break it to you guys but... they're just bits of plastic. They're not going to transform into steering wheels you can play Mario Kart 8 with or anything.

Registered 15 years agoHaha, I was thinking more along the lines of Disney Infinity and Skylanders - ie the character comes to life in the game and you train them up and save their progress on the little statue.
That sort of thing I could maybe get behind. Like unlocking a new racer or fighter on Mario Kart or Smash, and you then have your own "unique" racer/fighter. -

And I'd say Disney infinity are better too as you can upgrade them as part of the game. -

Registered 17 years agoSuper Smash Bros. does something much like that, yeah. The other games (mostly that were already released like MK8 and Hyrule) use them as patched in costume/vehicle unlocks.
I'm sure we'll see a mixture of both. The Smash integration makes sense since the range is named for it. -
In Mario Kart they unlock character related costumes for your mii, in smash bros they allow you to train up, customise and fight against the relevant character, and in High Rule Warriors Link unlocks an extra weapon and other amiibos give you small prizes. Lots of small, unimportant stuff that doesn't affect core game play. The Captain Toad amiibo will add a new mini game to Captain Toad Treasure Tracker.
