Went to the Lake District at Easter for a week last year but didn't really see what all the fuss is about. Living down south it was a hell of a trek and although we were lucky with the weather I couldn't help but feel we could have just stopped in the Peak District and had a similar experience and saved ourselves hours in the car.

Split the week between Windermere and Keswick and visited most of the recommended sites and did some good hikes.

Don't get me wrong I liked it but considering the chance of rain / distance and cost of accommodation I won't be rushing back.

A few weeks after getting back we went to Norway for a long weekend. Flights were 40 return each and the scenery was stunning and it took less time to get from my house to Bergen than it did the Lake District.

Leiden - spent a weekend there recently, loved it.

It had the bits of Amsterdam I liked (buildings, canals), without all the drugs/prossies/stag and hen dos that I really can't be arsed with.

Just a compact historic town with postcard pics round every corner, and lots of little bars and pubs. 20 minutes on the train from Schipol.

Don't think I'd enjoy a week in Windermere either, but Cumbria is stunning. I love it there, going for a week in June.

I think maybe my expectations for the Lake District were a tad high. I've been lucky enough to go to some places recently where the scenery has really blown me away. Kind of expected the Lake District to be like that so was disappointed when it didn't.

Surprised to see no love for the emerald isle. Dublin is great, especially if you stay around Temple Bar, or you can go outwards to Galway or Waterford, etc.

It's just a very nice part of the world, like Dartmoor. If you're looking for the sublime, elsewhere is better aye. Norway, Scotland, MOUNTAINS GANDALF, MOUNTAINS!

Yeah need to try The Highlands as well but a bit far for a weekend. Trouble is whenever I have a bit longer I always get tempted by better weather. At least when it is cold and wet up there you have the whiskey.

Eurostar to France somewhere. Good exchange rate against the Euro at the moment helps with cost.

Yeah but beer is 15.00 a pint in Norway
    More like 9.

But yeh, still outrageous. I really don't think I'd recommend going to Norway for the boozing though anyway.

Whisk her off her feet Casanova and go to Rome.

Bruges is a good place to go if you love ecclesiastical architecture.

I'm popping to Boston for a couple of days, anyone been there? Any bars to recommend? I've found time outs guide to bars in Boston which was pretty helpful. Looks like there are lots of sightseeing to do in the day but good bars are the priority. Also Boston red soxs are playing so I might go to Fenway park although tickets are pretty expensive.

In the theatre district next to Boston common. Looking the map it's very central with short walks to most of the sites.

You're not far from Cheers in Beacon Hill, but don't bother. I only really know the Back Bay Area, there's plenty of decent bars on Boylston Street, like Pour House, McGreevy's etc if you want to bar hop down the way. Newbury Street parallel with it has a couple of wine bar type things, mainly restaurants and shops, cool place to hang out. At the other end of the Bay there's a Eliot hotel, great Japanese restaurant in there with a great bar for cocktails and people watching. Food wise all the bars on Boylston do surprisingly good bar food, or there's an Abe & Louis steakhouse there too.

There's a few other proper upmarket places I could recommend if you plan on taking a sports jacket and shoes
