Registered 9 years agoI know you say you don't want to join more websites but SFX magazine run an Ask the Experts section. They put it online so that readers can also contribute. Might be worth a try.

There is already a thread asking for this book but they couldn't identify it, perhaps you should PM the guy that started it to ask him if he found it.

edit: Ah crap I can't find it now, I found it on my phone, whilst lying around in bed this morning. the top comment was for a book called Animorphs, but I don't think that's the one you;'re looking for.

Registered 20 years agoI doubt it - in the OP he describes it as originating from the late 70s/early 80s. -

I suspect it was more of a short story than a book, but it was illustrated, and I don't remember a huge amount about it, but here goes...
Small boy meets... something. I'm going to say a frog, but it could have been some other small creature. Said creature is able to speak, and turns out to be extra-terrestrial. Froggy dude has a spacecraft which (iirc) was drawn as looking much like the landing module from the Apollo missions.
He took small boy to his home planet, and the bit that sticks in my mind was that the ship could alter its size. So when Froggy first shows the kid the ship, it looks toy sized. It grows to actual size so they can board and take off, and once in space, increases to vast size, which, the Frog explains, helps it to cross huge distances. -
Thanks so far guys.
Definitely not Chocky and I read it at primary school so it must have been published before 1982.
Boo, your spaceship one rings a bell with me; I'll have a think.
Regarding my own one, as I say, memories are dim, but the children were helping to "do a job" in some way - saving someone or stopping a conflict or something like that.
When they returned to normal life...I don't know...maybe the ones with special powers lost them, but the kid with the alien pet got to keep it...gah; this has been bugging me for over thirty years.
