Registered 15 years agoPretty shit list actually. Mass Effect, but it's GiantRapist, so of course he'll rate that high. Same for GTA.
But Tiberium Sun over StarCraft? Goldeneye? ResiEvil 2? "Top 10 of all time" on games that are over 10 years old maybe. And SOUL BLADE?! Over the far superior Soul Calibur 1? I'd even take SoulCal2 at a stretch. -

Registered 12 years agoWhile the idea is sound, I think EG are misunderstanding that it isn't so much the scores, but the words that are written that are the problem on here. EG reviews are actually what put me off reading reviews in the first place, usually meandering off onto some sort of pretentious tangent. That isn't to mention their penchant for using spoilers in their reviews, explaining away entire sections of a game with all the subtlety of a brick in the face. -
To be fair when compiling any sort of list it will almost always be based on a certain period. In the case of games we will all think the greatest were from a certain period.
For example I'm 30 and so the N64 has a special place in my heart. Most of my greatest games ever will be from that era such as Ocarina of time, no doubt someone a bit older will pick all time classics from the NES era. Which while I had a NES I was to young to fully appreciate it.
Oh and about review scores, I think the reasons given on the front page make sense. Games are too complicated to be distilled to a number, as mentioned how do you offset broken servers and bad storytelling vs solid mechanics or fun ideas?

If only they had kept some sort of way to distinguish between these, say a marker or a label of some kind.
Every 90%+ game has been stunning - without exception.
Any game in the 80-90% spectrum has been very good, but not at the very highest, 'work of genius' etc level.
Games with less than 80% were always more niche or to be considered only if you really like that particular genre or area. -

I think that's a bit of an understatement. It's borderline unplayable now, even if you do some fiddly emulation trickery to have it play with dual analogue.
Goldeneye. Has Not Aged Well.
As for Tiberium Sun, that's not even considered the best game in the C&C series, let alone in a list of "all time classic games". -

Soul Blade
GTA V
Lemmings

They do need to move the Recommended tab over to the left a little bit though, it's throwing my muscle memory off. -

Mario Kart 8 being pretentious twaddle is genius or insanity. -
I think his definition of "pretentious" means "anything I don't like much". -

Your problem there is that the intro to soul blade, technically, makes it the best of the series if not the best game ever.

Registered 16 years agoI bet EG are delighted that this opportunity to gauge audience opinion of a seismic shift in how they operate has once again devolved into another thorough dissection of how much of a maladjusted weirdo burkey is. -
I AGREE with getting rid of the 'out of ten' score system, but I must admit I dislike the replacement.
IMO it should be a five score system.
1- Very Bad
2- Bad
3- Average
4- Good
5- Very Good
Thats clear cut. -
That's just a slightly more vague version of the 10 point system. -

You can't like put a score on art maaaaaan -
What about just having a GIF at the end of each review with the reviewer giving their score via the medium of dance -
3 ratings, two of which mean buy and only 1 means don't buy.
So we're going to see almost every game get recommended or above with the odd rarity getting an avoid.
So even this is quickly going to become utterly meaningless within the space of a few weeks.
I LIKE IT. -
Recommended = "they're games that would have been scored at the high end of the old scale"
Avoid = "rests at the opposite end of the spectrum"
What's the in between then, no award at all? -

I only look at the scores on EG reviews. Rarely ever read them. Probably many people do the same. -
