So been mucking around with windows 8 on the new tablet, and the following apps are decent.

    Standard fare :
Kindle, Netflix, VLC, Amazon, Ebay, Splashtop

    Others:
8stream - Twitch streamer, free and works in a tiny slice so you can surf internet and watch hearthstone at the same time. Also well designed, so when you are watching in a tiny slice the chat takes up the bottom of the slice.

OneCalendar - Much better than the original calendar, syncs well with google, and has a nice tile. Have uninstalled the original.

MySMS - sms from my android to windows tablet. Nice.

MetroMail - Gmail reader, bit meh on this one, its a bit slow. seems best of a bad bunch.

Spotlite - Spotify client, doesn't seem to be an actual spotify win 8 app yet.

NextGen Reader - Feedly based reader, works excellent when connected to internet, however doesn't seem to sync in the background and doesnt download full text pages after sync - ie you need to be connected to the internet to get the whole story

Thing I find is that pretty much everything can be done in a proper browser, even RT has full IE.

Apps to me seem like a way to get around inflexible mobile browsers. Saying that simple stuff like Netflix is a bit nicer when it's a dedicated app.

But do you really need an app for Amazon or eBay for example? And if it is not RT then why not just install the full program of say Spotify.

When I bought my linx 10 tablet I wasn't aware of how poor the app store is for it. The standard apps you mention are ok but they're not to the same standard as android android.

I was looking at the newest lumia phones when I upgrade but the lack of apps ie banking and apps I need are just not there so I will get the next sony device (currently have a Z1)

Agree you don't NEED the ebay or amazon apps, but they do make browsing a bit less fiddly on a smaller screen.

Have also downloaded the regular Spotify app, just saying that Spotlite is there for those that want to use it.

Definitely wouldn't buy a Windows 8 phone, the quality and designs look nice but as you say the app store just isn't there.

Also whats annoying about the windows 8 app store, is that no matter what keyword you search for (e.g. youtube, torrent, rss), when you sort by "highest rating" the SAME apps show up all the time which are nothing to do with what you are searching for, like spider solitaire.

They need to be more stringent about what keywords people are allowed to link to their apps
