I just watched the last part of the evil dead trilogy and I wondered if there are similar gems in this genre or any other that you want to share with the world. I have wo more films that I think everyone should see i.e braindead and the one with Derek.
And by the way, I saw the second Resident Evil yesterday and thought it was quite good.

I realize it's late , but please Titanic? I meant good movies, not cynical marketing flagships.

Can't go wrong with George A Romero's Dead trilogy. Night Of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead.

Heard good things about The Big Empty aswell, not a horror movie though. Oh and Suicide Kings, dunno if that's unkown but it's defeintly cult and it's great.

Evil Dead 4 is comming aswell.

Not much yet, other then news posts like this, was also a more recent interview where he mentioned he'd already begun writing the script, can't find that one though.

Ash was supposed to make an apereance in the Freddy vs Jason movie, but Rami diden't give the okat since he's still planning to do Evil Dead 4.
Ash also won't be in the Evil Dead remake.

Well they are in Luxembourg, but then around here most people are well informed. The thing is I like the fact that both the directors of braindead and evil dead have become some major box office magnets. I mean their first efforts were not exactly critically acknowledged.

But, what worries me more is that since I liked Resi 2, perhaps I might enjoy House of the Dead and Lost in the dark.

Oh and The Cube and Donnie Darko, although those are fairly well known. Still great though.

    edit:
No you won't, no matter how much Resi gets panned it doesn't even come close to being as craptacular as House of The Dead or Alone in the Dark. You should still watch House of the Dead though just to be amused by how utterly apauling it is, turns the movie into comedy gold!

Speaking of lifts if you are in Luxemburg then you should defiently catch De Lift

An 80's dutch cult horror movie, you can't get more obscure then that, although they did do a US remake recently wich was crap.

    edit, yeah fixed the link.

and an An IMDB link for the english speaking crowd :D

since we are at it, does anyone know a Japanese flick called two sisters? any good?
  • Deleted user 1 April 2005 01:55:03
it's pretty cool. but the story is kind of .. to be honest it's not worth trying to figure out what really happens in the movie.. at least I didn't bother to go to imdb and look at the board to see WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.. but it's a pretty cool film. some nice cheap scares and cool imagery. if you like the japanese horror sterotype it's a must-see.

thank you zing, are there similar movies you can recommend?
  • Deleted user 1 April 2005 02:31:04
yeah, sure.. I can mention a couple quick-like. I would write a few things about each film, but I'm really looking to get back to watching 'curb your enthusiasm' on dvd now, so yeah, quick short list..

korei, the eye (1, 2), ring (1, 2), uzumaki .. uh, yeah. I can't remember much else that I'd recommend at the moment..

..so I'll list a few Takashi Miike films aswell.. since I love him dearly.

Gozu, Zebraman, Izo, Audition, Ichi the Killer, One Missed Call, Visitor Q.

One Missed Call really belong in the first category and is quite quite silly.. but there's some fun stuff in it.
  • Deleted user 1 April 2005 04:06:30
Nothing of that is really little known though, so here's my standard 'little known' film.

Death Bed: The Bed that eats.

It's not really a horror film, it's just a strange film. Obviously about a bed that consumes people. The cool thing about it is the way it's told, the generally weird plot and the consuming of people is also neat.. plus, it's just a bed.. and as such just sits around waiting for people to lie down in it. If you can get past the fact that the film is extremely 70s, not even close to having a budget and just plain weird. Great. Available on DVD.

Ah, this thread is a great opportunity for me to pimp the excellent Wild Zero once again. Like it says in the review, "there's lots of blood, drugs, beer, gender confusion, swearing, guns, zombies and motorcycles."

    Highly recommended!

Big Wednesday..great cult movie from the late 70's about surfing. It's got a very young Jean-Michael Vincent & Gary Busy.

Got that- good film. Literally nothing happens apart from surfing. I enjoyed it :)

Saw Sideways last weekend at the cinema, that was a pretty interesting film.

Do you remember the bit at the house party when that maniac covers himself in cooking oil and tries to force himself into the oven?

Oh so many. These are all kind of well known though I suppose. Dark City. King of New York. Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Killer Tomatoes. Dazed and Confused.

Some of my fave cult movies...

"The Cars that ate Paris" - Weird NZ flick about killer cars in an NZ town called Paris (which incidentally really does exist and DOES have a motor transport accident museum...!)

"Goodbye Pork Pie" - Yes another NZ film. THE best road movie I've ever seen and it's got minis in it. Not that I'm an NZ-o-Phile or anything but they make some cracking low budget flicks...

"Buckaroo Banzai" - Utterly utterly weird film, utterly amazing cast (mostly "before they were properly famous" though including Ellen Barkin, Peter "Robocop" Weller, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow etc with some real killer quotes in it.

    Drunken Master (Jackie Chan's finest)
Strange Brew (way before Wayne's World)
Mr. Vampire (still one of my favourites)
Anything featuring Godzilla played by a man in a rubber suit.

    Grosse Point Blank (awesome)
Eraserhead - early David Lynch movie (Igor - switch the bizzare-o-tron to maximum)
    Another vote for Cube
    Pi - v. strange
Society - eeeeugh! (in a good way)

Some of the Troma movies are worth seeing - the first Toxic Avenger was a bit of a laugh but they go downhill fast. 'Tromeo & Juliet' and 'A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell' sadly fail to live up to the promise of their titles.
