I strongly urge you to avoid wasting your hard-earned cash on "Be Cool". The filmmakers should have concentrated on creating an enjoyable film instead of cramming as many shitty pop stars as possible into this train wreck. The only feature that gets pass marks from me is the Rock's eyebrow.

Makes sense. It's based on an Elmore Leonard story and those have a habit of being made into abysmal films. After a few gems like Jackie Brown and the original Get Shorty, it was time for a dud. Plus it's a sequel to a pretty good film, which is guaranteed to make it pants. Add to that the fact that the trailer looked pish, and trailers usually manage to make even pretty bad films look good.

How surprised was I, then, when the reviews started coming in and were quite reasonable? Very, that's the answer. So ta for confirming my suspicions.

But, but, but it's got Uma Thurman and John Tavolta! They've never been in any bad films!

Oh, how do I hate Uma Thurman. Let me count the ways.

I swear the fact that she once got into a decent film and didn't manage to ruin it (Pulp Fiction) is the biggest cosmic coincidence imaginable. Probably proves the existence of God. Or the Devil. Or something.

Eh!?? Have to disagree with you there. He's one of the few people that can get Hollywood to make something watchable. You really have to try extra hard to make an Elmore Leonard screenplay into a turd, though they do seem to have done remarkably well with Be Cool. Incidentally, the book's pretty good (when is an EL book not?).

Agh, I didn't like the book at all. He's written much better novels than that.

Well, I'll just take a few (selective) quotes from the imdb database of films based on his novels:

    - Stick ('Stick Stinks' - 4.8/10)
    - The Rosary Murders ('Disappointing' - 5.4/10)
    - Border Shootout (no comment needed - 3.5/10)
    - Cat Chaser ('Flawed' - 5.0/10)

Okay, so it's actually been harder work than I expected - plenty of his older films seem to fall under the category of 'overlooked gem' these days. But still, there seems to have been an extrodinarily high number of dull directors making average films out of his great books, great directors getting trouble from the studio, or just good directors having an off day. It's more surprising since his books are so perfectly made for film in lots of ways.

Is the original story any good, though?

And the Rock is the new Arnie...
Or at least the new Dolph Lundgren ;)
