Went to see Arsenal V Norwich at Highbury. Had a brilliant time and even got to see Henri get a hat-trick. I'm not even a Gunners fan but a mate had a spare ticket. I can eee how some people get hooked after just one match. The atmosphere was something else.

Imagine if the first match you'd went to in 20 years had been the Newcastle one, eh? Imagine that. Go on.

I know, particularly as I've got more connections with Newcastle. My dad was a Goerdie and I've spent a lot of time up there over the years. What were Dyer & Bowyer thinking??

    Footballers?

    Thinking?

    What a novel idea.

See, while I can't defend what they did, the fact is that a big deal is being made of this, and there's another big deal being entirely ignored. The referee had a fucking nightmare, and nothing will be done about it, AGAIN.

They're put in a position of power, to influence a game that has millions of pounds and dreams weighing on it, and when they fuck up (Which is a hell of a lot more often than is acceptable), what happens?

Fuck all. They just walk away. Back to their blackboards.

I mean, yes, what happened was scandalous. They're footballers, for fucks sake. Put in a game where the referee had made so many basic errors of judgement - believe me - I'd be wound up too. That isn't to say that what happened is even remotely acceptable under the circumstances, but COME ON, PEOPLE.

We really have to have the men in the middle made accountable for their being shit at what they're paid for.

Agreed..I think it's time they introduced camera replays into football, especially near the goal line. How they do it is another story but too many stupid decisions are being made all over the world. Also, it's probably due to the fact that the two players involved were on the same team, as players are always fighting with the opposition.

Very true. Should have been two stick-on pens for Newcastle as I saw it.

However, whilst I could understand it if one of them had belted a Villa player (Barry gets my vote) to go at each other seems ever so slightly mental.

I suppose that unfortunately you never know what Bowyer might have said to Dyer. Though, from the pictures, the ever lovely Lee seemed the most upset. I thought he was going to cry as Shearer led him away.

It was hilarious lip-reading Big Al, though:

'REF! REF! What? What you sending them off for? Fuck's sake!'

Errrm, probably just as well you're not taking up the punditry just yet there, Alan.

Sarcasm isn't a particularly attractive trait you know:-)

Instead of red carding, couldn't they just sentence them to ten minutes in a concurrent rugby league game, to get their aggression out or merely to pummel the pulp out of them?

"Bowyer gets the ball, he's like a gazelle, he tries to go outside..." STOMP. BLEED.

Hey, we don't even need anything so drastic as cameras, just make it that the fuckers have to answer for their mistakes. Right now there is absolutely no comeback for a shocking performance. And the thing is, they're all football fans.

Don't tell me they're all capable of being completely impartial.

    It's not possible.

Impartiality and the support of a football team are about as mutually exclusive as you can get. Any referee that says he can do this is LYING.

    So let's recap that.

For 90 minutes, they're in a position of complete power.
The power they wield can be used to influence the possible outcome of games they have an interest in (for example, we now have two players serving a ban for the cup game against Man U... I mean... I'm not saying he is - not for a minute - but... what are the chances of the ref being a Man U fan, eh?)
After that 90 minutes, they don't have to answer to anyone.

    Jesus Christ.

My camera suggestion was more to do with crappy decisions from the ref, rather than keeping an eye on players scrapping.
