| I wouldn't be surprised if this model was originally due to be released last year. As an improved version of the original model (aka GBA to GBA SP, or DS to Lite) it's fine, but feels weird coming this late in the Switch's lifespan. Since the Switch is still selling so well, maybe they decided to just hold off on the spec upgrade until the Switch 2. |

Registered 2 years agoYou’d have to think that COVID supply chain issues and the unexpectedly massive boost to Switch sales / Animal Crossing Lockdown Edition probably altered any plan they had to release an upgraded Switch. The screen manufacture was probably set up ages ago, the question of better gizzards though was probably decided more recently. I think it’s pretty nuts though, all the upgrades are for handheld / not-docked play, so is this the most expensive handheld gaming device ever made now? It’s AU$540. I think the PSP was $400 at launch here. -

Registered 9 years agoTo be fair, it's not really just a handheld device. The lite is, but that's much cheaper.
It's still not ideal to be more expensive than the other current gen systems, but gaming in Australia is expensive. It is known. -

As far as I can tell the original Tegra X1 is still being retired. However, since 2019 Nintendo have been using a modified version of the X1 they call Mariko, which first appeared in the Switch Lite and then also replaced the standard X1 in the docked models. When Nvidia announced they were killing X1 production I'd assumed Mariko would be retired as well and Nintendo would maybe adopt one of the newer Tegras for any new consoles. Seems that's not the case just yet.
What about that thing where the Nvidia chip they use in the current model was going to be discontinued, so they'd have to install something more powerful. What happened to that?
Nvidia are really struggling to meet demand for new silicon at the minute, so that may have been a contributing factor to keeping Mariko for as long as possible. -

Registered 12 years agoI don’t know why they are calling this a midlife update, they launched in March 2017, Oktober 2021 will put it at 4,5 years. As a reminder there were 5 years between the N64/GC/Wii ( 1996-2001-2006).
Sorry, I’m just really disappointed that they are back to doing the absolute minimum to keep making money. -

Registered 15 years agoI have been wanting a normal V2 Switch for handheld use for a while so this was easier to justify. The bigger screen and OLED will be a nice improvement for my desired use.
Hopefully will have a bit of a wait before an actual successor. -

Registered 4 months agoI’m very tempted too but didn’t get on with the OG Switch in handheld. Maybe it’s the bulkier size, weight or feeing of cheapness with connecting joycons.
It just felt too big for a handheld.
But I’d love that big OLED screen for portable. If only they could upgrade the Lite like this. -

Registered 15 years agoI have a Linx Vision 8" Windows gaming tablet that is pretty chunky (albeit probably sturdier) so this shouldn't feel too bad hopefully. I resisted expensive modern Windows gaming tablets this year so will make Do with this. I do wonder if wider 720P OLED panel availability at 7" will leak into the Windows market in the future though... -

What I’m trying to say is, all the OLED upgrades do anything for is handheld mode. Not a single benefit for docked users. So to me it feels primarily intended as a handheld device even more so than the original Switch, or to appeal to handheld dominant users.

And that it’s a rip-off. I mean, I bet the screen is really nice and I’d want it if I saw it, but this console is just not a complete breakfast. -

Better download times on a wired network connection while docked? Even that is an optimistic guess. I've always assumed that download speeds have been bottlenecked by the wifi chip, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the d/l speeds from the store being terrible over ethernet as well.

Registered 13 years ago@erniewhatbert I have an ethernet adaptor on my OG model and while it makes MP more stable I don’t notice anything improved about download speeds if I’m honest. It certainly doesn’t seem to get anywhere near the max read/write of my microSD card.
That said, could be that they’ve improved it for the new model.
Edit: Ignore me, I just realised my adaptor fits to one of the docks USB 2.0 ports so that would limit throughput to 60Mbytes per second - so maybe a direct connection would be better after all.

Registered 15 years agoIf there had been a dockless SKU for this I would have gone for that with there being 2 docks in the house already. I guess they don't want to cannibalise the Lite sales and confuse consumers though... Plus they would probably only lip a tiny amount off the cost -

Registered 2 years ago@SomethingOriginal I guess then you have question whether the dock’s physical connection to the Switch is any better than USB2.0. Nintendo would have used the cheapest thing they could get away with you might expect. -

Registered 13 years ago@davidfowles True, although I’m hopeful that the dock is just a direct pass through to the USB 3.0 on the Switch itself so fingers crossed!
To be fair I payed a stupid amount of money to get a 1Tb microSD as I love having my entire game collection in my pocket (well, in my rucksack at least), so luckily I tend to only download once, but when I had smaller cards it was a bit annoying managing space (but obviously not that onerous in the grand scheme of things!). -

Registered 4 months agoI mean, it wasn't that confusing; clearly there's no benefits to the docked Switch, but it's called the 'OLED model' - so the benefit is really obvious.
It's just a much better quality and bigger screen. -
