Well, that was shit. Liked the final scene because of "zomg what ever will they do?" but everything leading up to it was like a parody of noir. I also have a problem with entertainment where everyone is unlikable. This took that to a new level. Felt very immature. |

Registered 15 years agoLayers and layers of troubled cop clichés wrapped in layers and layers of excellent production. Decent cast, Farrel's okay and Vaughn still looks like he'll burst into wisecracks at any point, but it's information overload with the numerous threads and characters.
Opening scene with Farrel telling his kid to be proud and brave, when his eyes looked at the lil' fat ginger before him with absolute pity was chucklsome.
I'll give it time to settle. -

Registered 14 years agoPretty good start. If anyone thinks otherwise, S1 got some of the same sneers this ep is getting, but it wasn't such a big name back then, so it was more low-key.
This episode is a good set up. The kid being fat and ginger might be a step too far.
Not hearing encouraging noises about future episodes (including one explicitly taking the piss out of S1's director), and Pizzolatto chucking his toys out of the pram over the Ligotti similarities/plagiarism means this series will be a bit more conventional, but I'm going to stick with it. -

I wouldn't know, haven't read Pizzolatto's writing. I don't see it theme or content wise, and I've read most of Ligotti's work. Ligotti is quite fancifully weird at times. TD has never even come close to how odd Ligotti's stories get.
Let's be fair, Pizzolatto owes a great deal to Ligotti in terms of style. -

Registered 14 years agoThere was far too much going on to keep track of. I still didn't know the names of half the characters by the end of the episode and had to read a recap to get some sense of what the fuck was happening. Some dodgy writing as well.
Meh, I'm sure it'll pick up in a few episodes time. -

@Iain815 i'm similar.
I think I enjoyed it, but feel like I've watched it through someone elses eyes as I can't really recall much, or who anyone's name is.
Apart from Casper. -

Registered 17 years agoI liked it. The first shot of a cop, sitting at the end of a long table talking, I thought "uh oh, not this again" and again at the same shot of two cop partners driving a long in a car.
But they stayed away from those very 'season 1' settings and introduced a ton of characters and put the ground works down for a story that seems like it got some good potential and 3 interesting protagonists.
It's a different flavour story and a different flavour storytelling than last season but that's fine. I would have probably stopped watching if it was a carbon copy from last time but with a different case to solve and 2 different characters to solve it. -

I thoroughly enjoyed it, not least cos of recognising the sheer number of locales from GTA V.
Also, the journalists's name was Houser or Howser like him off of of of GTA but spelt differently.
I'm a detective now, like in Dark Knight Rises which I rewatched yesterday, so I don't believe in coincidence.
I can't tell the difference between fact and fiction...I think the vast amount of Guinness I've had on a school night might be to blame. -

At all.
Probably one of the strongest opening episodes to a new series in a long time. And as far as I remember... A lot of other people thought so as well. -

Registered 19 years agoYeah S1 started off great, it's just that episode 4 was such a standout it makes it seem otherwise.
Reviewers have only seen first 3 episodes. I don't expect it to be as good as last season, but 4th episode could be another step up. -

That said, "This is my least favourite life, this is my least favourite you" sing/scene was bordering on parody.
I honestly loled.

A lot of people did. And others accused it of being "brofound". S1 was coming from a totally different place, a relative unknown with little expectation behind it. We all remember it as it is now, lauded and draped with superlatives. Funny how your memory confirms what you believe.

This is a pretty good list of what was wrong. But the real problem was how long it took for the plot to get going.

No, you're really quite wrong about this. Ep one was hailed as being something very special.
