Chelsea v Bayern Munich after-thoughts thread

    Chelsea 4 - 2 Bayern Munich

Great goals from Lampard, scrappy one from Drogba but he needed to score after missing from yards out, and a horrendous dive from Ballack secured Munich a penalty and 2 away goals. Good result, but that dive could put Chelsea out...

Nah, I think Chelsea have clinched it. or they'd ahve to fuck up real hard.

Was a bit surprised the way they won so easily and with so many goals.

What? No 'Londoners v Nazis' title? I'm disappointed in you deathgibbon. :p

I've already tipped Chelsea to go all the way, so I'm sticking with that. I don't see Bayern beating Chelsea 2-0 or 3-1, even if Makaay is back in time, and it looks like Pizzaro will miss the next match as well. Guerrero was hopeless. I doubt he even touched the ball once in the whole game.

I just hope Chelsea don't draw Liverpool in the next round. I don't want to sit through a repeat of the Carling Cup final.

And it looks like AC Milan will cruise through as well. They beat Inter 2-0, and it was AC's 'home' game, so Inter failed to get that all important away goal. They just lack that edge without Adriano.

um... for those of you interested in those nasty diving Italian teams. ;p

And looking at Ballack in the 92nd minute, there's also nasty diving German teams.

Nah 4-2 should be enough. Don't care about Bayerns home record against English teams. This is no normal English team. The Pool are in with a pretty good shout too.

I was told in a shop yesterday that they were totally sold out, and expected new stock in 2 weeks time.

Can't vouch for the rest of San Francisco, or the US, but I haven't managed to buy one yet!

Last year there were quite a few surprises in the second leg of some games that seamed clear (Monaco beating Real 3-1, Deportivo's even more incredible 4-0 against Milan), but I can't see Chelsea lose this one. They're too good, and Bayern looks rather weak to me.

In my opinion, Bayern is one of the several big european teams that need a complete makeover. There are at least five or six players that are just not up to the required level anymore and should be replaced. Balack is a continous dissapointment to me, I'll never understand how such a good player can turn into crap so suddenly. Hargreaves too, isn't what he used to be and about Kahn, don't even get me started.

Milan is the only team that has a chance to beat Chelsea this year. I hope they don't meat too soon and Milan-Chelsea will be the final. And Milan wins :).

For everybody in this thread that didn't know this, the draw for the semi's is already decided. The winner of the Chelsea-Bayern match will meet the winner of the Liverpool-Juventus match and the winner of the PSV-Lyon match will meet the winner of the AC Milan-Inter Milan match. So a Chelsea-AC Milan final is a definite possibility.

I was very impressed with Chelsea last night and that second Lampard goal was a thing of beauty, best goal I've seen in the CL this year. But it's not over yet, I can see Bayern winning 2-0 at home with Makaay back. Hope Chelsea go through though.

AC milan will go through over Inter I think, I don't see them score twice against Stam and co;)

Mourinho will just play his 5-5 tactic away from home, ensuring everyone defends, maybe a little counter-attack every 15mins, Munich won't score and you'll be through.

    "Can of worms" material:

John Terry on Ballacks (obvious) dive:

"'That's not what we're about in England and it's disappointing to see teams come over here and do that."

Here we go again.. There's no doubt that Ballack dived and should've been booked for it (I also dislike him very much in general).. but Terry should get of his high horse.. Is it only the english players who can't see that they dive just as much as any others?

the irony of any of mourinho's team complaining about diving is almost too much to bear. porto under him were the biggest bunch of diving time wasting cheats i have ever seen and plenty of the chelski boys go down like they've been shot at the slightest touch *cough* joe cole *cough*.
actually i quite like the guy but his teams take every advantage they can to win and are in no position to be moralising about johnny foreigner's dubious tactics.

I think the chap from F365 summed it up pretty nicely:
Anyone from Stamford Bridge anywhere near a high horse over Bayern's late penalty should reflect on the foul on Barcelona's goalkeeper by Carvalho that enabled John Terry to score the vital fourth at Stamford Bridge in the last round.

It was clever, it was planned or at least premeditated, and it was highly effective. There would still have been time for Chelsea to gain an unsullied winner, but after that anyone who gets too shirty about Ballack's dive is just a whiner.

Hehe. Great point. Chelsea plays more fair than Porto did last year, but still, they're in no position to criticise others for cheating.

In the referee's defence, Balack's dive was very well executed, the best thing he did all night apart from taking the penalty itself, wich he did flawlesly.

I doubt Chelsea will be that defensive in Munich, I think they will try to grab an early goal to improve their chances and sink Bayern's morale. But I'm no Mourinho, so don't trust me :).

Oh, and thanks Obscured for the clarification.
