On a massive Nintendo retro-binge at the moment. Anyone else? Page 12

    Image quality is as perfect as a Trinitron over RGB ever was - like a top quality RGB monitor at the resolutions we're dealing with - and I can use my light guns with it. Makes me want a NES & Duck Hunt + Wild Gunman.

    I can also connect both the projector and the CRT if I get the right splitter box, that way any spectators can use the big screen.

    Works well for the occasional CRT use, and the size is fine because the laptop table can be wheeled up close. The rest of the time it sits in the corner and doesn't take up much space. My other one lives in the kitchen.

    Different priorities innit, but for me it's CRT, real console, real games. I totally see the inconveniences that involves for most people but I guess I'm all or nothing. I'd never go the route you have, personally, I'd sooner spend the money on some games.

    I would love to have a CRT but not enough that I want to ruin my living room with one and, whilst there are other rooms in my house i could use,including my office in the attic, I don't want hide myself away up there. So given that CRT is out, the next thing to consider is how to get the best possible picture out of my HDTV, which I think I have achieved without compromising on authenticity.

    Using the Everdrive/SD2SNES is about not bankrupting myself. I am actively collecting games but having a flashcart means that I don't have to drop £10-£50 on eBay every time I fancy playing something I don't already own and can instead look out for bargains etc

    Like some of those mega man x games that don't work with the everdrive (maybe the sd2 does?).

    I hear they might be a little bit pricey.

    I remember getting the basics of Mario kart, yoshis Island, starfox and pilotwings to compliment my everdrive at the time. Ballz 3D was tempting but....doesn't look like a worthy investment 😆

    Yep. My 6128 with a 3½" floppy drive stuck on top. To stay on topic, it has a fantastic conversion of Donkey Kong by Ocean Software. One of the best 8-bit versions. It also has the original Mario Bros game.

    @Jazzy_Geoff Fair enough, I do see the train of thought. I actually enjoy escaping into my man cave I guess, to the point I'd often rather be in the there than playing games in my living room :D

    US Starfox arrived today. Tried it with the action replay on the old super famicom. Didnt work. Hacked off the lip off the cart slot with a Stanley. Still didn't fit. Removed PCB from shell, inserted into console. That worked.

    Further knife hackings will occur tomorrow.

    One thing that is cool about Flashcarts is the ability to play translations and hack. I've got a bunch downloaded for the SNES and am looking forward to playing some of the LTTP hacks.

    Not all will work however. The NES version of FFVII and Legend of Link have file sizes unsupported by the carts so you need to find them on cart. Which is not easy to do.

    Heh, brilliant.

    My NTSC collection is growing

    Managed to get secret of mana, Zelda lttp, ghouls n ghosts, chaos engine/soldiers of fortune, final fight 1 and 2, sim city, castlevania IV and super Mario world. Just waiting for metroid now and a few others.

    I've had to go with a RGB scart cable into a fairly new Panasonic plasma but it still looks pretty good for me. I'll take a photo

    I think the colours are pretty bright and the picture is sharp enough for me. I know you can get better etc, but I'm having a whale of a time with it

    Did a 2 player of chaos engine yesterday with a mate. Totally brilliant fun until the beers kicked in and we got our arses handed to ourselves :)

    Also got it hooked up to an onkyo AV receiver, so I've set it to all stereo for the 5-1 speakers so you get a slight surround sound with it

    @AceGrace Damn you sir.

    About 6 months ago a mate of mine was in Amsterdam (with his girlfriend I should add) and sent me a message: "a guy was selling all his old gaming junk for about 50 Euros, I didn't have time to get in touch sorry but I did take a photo because I know this crap interests you".

    Sends me a photo of a boxed Neo Geo CD and stack of games.

    @quadfather Nice. FYI ideally you'd set your TV to 4:3 for retro stuff, looks like it's stretching it at the moment.

    @quadfather How much did Secret of Mana set you back? I've never got round to that one.

    Also sort yourself out a Final Fantasy III/VI, probably the de facto reason to own a U.S. SNES IMO as all other console ports have had one problem or another.

    @Psiloc

    Had to pay 42 in the end. Boxed with the manual though. But no map.

    Yes, must get round to a final fantasy one.

    Really itching to get chrono trigger too, but the prices are astronomical

    @quadfather Yeah Chrono Trigger was a cart only jobby for me to get the price down to something approaching sensible. But it's a fucking cracker and I'd pay the money again in a heartbeat*.

    Again, future console ports were all borked in one way or another, great use of the U.S. SNES.

    EDIT: * Personally speaking. It's a lot of money to recommend it unconditionally I will admit.

    @Psiloc

    It's a lot of money but I know I'll crack eventually. I just can't not have it!

    It's around the 80-100 mark at the moment

    Then again, I probably spent that on beer during the bank holiday weekend. Plus I bought 4 vinyl records for 80 the other week

    After getting very poor results hooking up my retro consoles to my flat screen I looked at getting a CRT TV or PVR monitor.

    Even RGB SCART cables hooked up directly to the TV gave a blurry image with artefacts or ghosting around sprites and washed out colours.

    In the end, although it was a quite expensive bit of kit, the XRBG mini was the best option for me and saved a lot of space and agro from my wife.

    I now finally have my PS2 hooked up to the XRGB through component to the d-terminal port and the image quality is smooth but crisp, with deep vibrant colours that look better than I've ever seen them.

    I was playing Sega Ages Dynamite Deka and Viewtiful Joe, for the first time through the Framemeister last night and now know there is no going back now.

    The systems I've played so far through the Framemeister are the Megadrive, Saturn and PS2 using RGB and/or component cables and had stellar results with them all.

    Next I want to try the Gamecube and Dreamcast. Can anyone confirm that a Wii component cable will work with the Gamecube?

    Pretty sure the Wii component works with a GameCube as I was faffing around with it myself not that long ago

    The NES looks incredible through the frameister. The SNES looks great but not as good, I guess because the graphics are more complicated so they look somehow less "pure". Still looks ace though.

    Was playing the LTTP hack "Parallel Worlds" last night. I can tell this game is going to be hard. You spend the first ten minutes wandering around the map, looking for the first dungeon with no weaponry, then you get to the first dungeon and you still don't have any weapons and you have to kill soldiers with pots.

    @SlackMaster Afraid the Wii component cable doesn't fit a Gamecube (I just tried).

    @pyper777 Ah, that's a pain as I think a Gamecube component cable is a bit pricey.
