PC only for now (though put a frock on me and call me 'Mom' if it doesn't hit conslols), on Steam early access and as hardcore a rally sim as you ever wanted (apparently).

    I'm in. Well, probably.

I've taken a punt on it. Will be downloaded in a couple of hours.

@Maturin Updating this thread with your opinion on the game should be a top priority from henceforth.

I couldn't resist either. Helps that the G27 is set up in preparation for project cars anyway.

Oh wow, I just crashed my mini, was retired from the championship I was in, and lost a bunch of credits to repairs.
The whole 3th race I was driving with the wheel pointing at 3 o clock because the steering got hit in the second race.

    Awesome.

Just had a quick 20 minutes in the game. Long terrifying stages, a couple of times I crashed so badly it wouldn't let me continue. This game is rock hard and very unforgiving.

    It's fantastic.

@Maturin Or to put it another way, exactly what rally games are supposed to be. Rallying is a hard, gruelling sport, filled with long car breaking stages where a single mistake could not only cost you the race but your life as well. Yes you probably should still put in training wheel difficulty settings but the meat of the game should be very difficult.

    I know.

I used to play Mobil 1 back in the day with a big heavy force feedback wheel. A bad stage could reduce a man to tears. :)

Nice work Codemasters, I'd pretty much written them off and then they do something that sounds like pretty much exactly what I want.

Just gave it a quick spin, pretty great. And although it looks a tad basic when you look at any details, there's something quite real about the cockpit view.

    Very, very nice.

I also like how they just put a pretty polished Early Access out today, without any prior announcement. Cool surprise.

I'm really liking the look of this. I'll keep my eye on it.

Well I certainly didn't expect to be dusting off my old wheel and careering terrified through the damp Powys countryside tonight. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm still tweaking the wheel settings but made it through about one and a half events before calling it a night.

And thank god there's no rewind nonsense, and real penalties for killing your car, it's incredibly tense.

I know this is pretty much sacrilege in the PC sim community, but is this any good with a 360 pad?

    @Maturin nice one!

That was what I wanted to know too. It's been ages since I spent such an amount of money on a game, but I think this time I'll have to.
  • Deleted user 28 April 2015 00:52:00
Most ridiculously, it's neither in Steam's featured new releases nor in popular new releases. I hope that's only because it's early access.

It came up on my steam news pop up window when I loaded up steam today, also as memory serves valve stopped advertising early access games on steam a while ago because people are idiots and for some insane reason kept complaining that games weren't finished on early access.

It was also leading devs down a route where they were using early access to put half finished games on steam and then hoping early access would secure enough funds to try and finish the game or not bother and pocket the money.

Played it for an hour now, and I love it. Brilliant. Controller works very well, at least the DS4.

Argh this is the sort of thing that makes me want to buy a PC. And a steering wheel.

Anyone able to compare it to the brutal brilliance of Richard Burns Rally?

@y2rich I can't really (too long that I played RBR), but I find Dirt Rally so far quite, hm, accessible.

Not that my driving isn't totally awful, mind, but it just plays extremely well, and believable. I often do find driving games that are more grounded in reality easier to play though because cars react more in an expected manner, but this does not feel "hardcore" with all the negative things such a term might also imply.

"Easy to learn, difficult to master" might be the correct expression. :-) I feel the same about Assetto Corsa - driving just feels natural.
