Please no System Shock wannabe rubbish this time, give me fast paced demon shootage in self contained levels with lots of secret areas.

    Exactly.

Serious Sam but with a dark as fuck 'hell and demons' theme, and roamable non-linear levels with key cards and the like, and I'll be ecstatic :)

I didn't really like Serious Sam to be honest. It plays more like a succession of Arenas into which enemies spawn endlessly into, rather than the tightly designed doom maps of old. I always saw it billed as a "retro" shooter but it doesn't really have lot in common in terms of level design with stuff like Quake, Doom, DN3D.

Oh, it has to have the old-school Doom-style level design of course.

I'd be happy if it played like wolfenstein but with more open levels

I enjoyed Wolfenstein the new order, but I felt it got a bit linear all too often. If the level design is even remotely similar to the originals then I think this reboot could be great.

Dammit. I just put my headphones in, arranged to the phone so I can watch this trailer in its full glory and it's 12 seconds long.

    Bumeggs.

Hopefully Wolfenstein has shown Bethesda that people still want/love old school flavoured shooters.

I agree. I'm hoping they take the shooting of Wolf with some more open and free form levels. The basics are all there ready to go, they just need to Doomify it slightly.

I occasionally play the original Doom when I'm feeling romantic. A true classic that still plays amazingly well.

Can't say that about most games apart from Nintendo stuff.

New stuff looks good. I actually really liked the approach of Doom 3 though, and it was incredibly tense. I do like the look of it being more open, but I hope it retains a bit of the atmosphere of 3. This looks a bit more run and gun and a bit less hide and shit yourself.

I thought Doom 3 did that quite well, but it was a completely different experience to what Doom 1 and 2 provided me back in the day. Having a quick glance at the gameplay vid, I'm really pleased with the direction they're taking it - it just looks fun as hell, no pun intended.

    It needs to be darker.

Thought it looked fantastic. Looked like Doom. No recharging health, hell even no need to reload guns. Bring it on.

That gameplay vid looked good. Here's hoping it's not a vertical slice demo that will be scaled back when it's closer to release.

Really it just made me want to play the original again. Unless 4 pulls something out of nowhere I can't see it beating the enemy and level design, nor how meaty the guns feel.

I don't see any indication that they're going to come close to that... but we'll see. I wouldn't have expected anything from Wolfenstein either and that turned out great.

Initially it looked good to me but by the end I was getting bored of all the execution animations. Look like they'll ruin the flow.

Also looks a lot like a vertical slice. I severely doubt it will look like that when it's released. At least on console.

I didn't think the enemy design was particularly inspiring either for that matter.

Looked a ton of fun, colour me very excited. 3 was very drab and this felt like a modern spin on the Doom I played at my mate's PC aged 12!

I guess the originals are going to be remade by fans in the new editor, loads of potential in that tool. Great move bringing that feature to console.

People have been moaning about difficulty in the comments thread - obviously they were employing the old conference trick of playing on easy to show off the graphics etc.

Is it me, or is it a bit slow?

    It's not really....frenetic, is it?

Yeah, but hopefully just showing off the graphics. It did make me laugh about the pre-trailer speech about fast gameplay being central to the Doom experience... then showing that.

But yeah, it looked like my dad trying to aim on a pad in Halo.

    Looks like doom 3 tbh.

I'm not sure on all the slow animations either

The second gameplay vid, set in Hell, looked a lot more fast and frantic than the installation on Mars (which is clearly the start of the game).

I like some of the executions but, realistically, you won't use them as much as they feature them. And it's obvious why they feature them.

As a graphics whore I'm happy, lot's of particles, glowing lava or molten metal.

I suppose if they just do 1 animation for picking up a gun, say, and then the next time you pick it up it just picks it up instead of ogling it for 20 minutes, it should be ok.

I'll have to check out the gameplay in hell then.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the doom games, including 3. I just hope it's nicely full on.

The hell bit didn't convince me either, had all the same issues that the Mars bit did. :(

I think I'll just hold tight, lower expectations and wait. Fingers crossed for a nice surprise.

It's weird how people are seeing this so differently. I thought it looked fast paced enough, certainly more so than most shooters these days. Feel like I watched a different video.
