    Whoop whoop. I'm playing through with my fourth character and just hit 100 hours total! Was 55 odd hours with my first character at level 130, he was all strength Havel set. Then character two was 25 ish hours, she was a mainly Dex and that cool frost blade with very light armour. Character three was binned after about 10 hours, sorceress. Now I'm on character four, a seemingly crazy powerful pyromancer. Currently at farron keep.

    Hmmm haven't played this in quite a while... might have to wait as I just started a new Skyrim character.

    I have just started a new Skyrim character as well. Going all two handed, heavy armour Orc as a change from the usual stealth bow set up.

    The last build I had for DS3 was a DEX- INT build who dual wielded the sellsword twinblades. Applying crystal weapon to these would kill most things with a few hits. Also used the invisibility spell (chameleon?) to get a sneaky backstab on as many enemies as I could.

    Even when I try not to use a strength build I end up respeccing at rosaria, especially when I get Ledo's hammer.

    Magic and miracles are just a bit rubbish in this one.

    I didn't get on with the sellsword. L1 was pretty decent for spamming but drained stamina big time. Currently my goto combo is the flame explosion hand with a fire axe.

    The world, character design, crazy stories are just so much better than all the copy cat games that have been released since ds1. I mean I'm looking forward to nioh 2 after just completing 1 but the levels are just so dull Vs exploring this. I wonder if I can complete this and b.b. again before nioh 2.

    @Bichii The Surge 2 would like a word. Personally I found it has a much better, much more focused and tightly designed world than the mess of DS2 and sprawl of DS3. It actually has a coherent narrative, great gameplay, and the best Souls-variant combat for a proper evolution of the approach to fighting. It has its faults but it's definitely worth a play if you get a chance.

    Just checked metacritic. DS3 89 critic and 88 user score. Surge 2 73 critic and 70 user score. Doesn't look great for surge 2 and I thought 1 was very average game..

    Surge 1 was ok. Kind of interesting how it used the souls mechanics.

    I did most of the first big level but it got fairly boring.

    The generic sci fi setting and bland characters didn't help. All these games seem designed for 14 year old lads.

    @Bichii When did a game in the 70's scores start being 'bad' or are we working with the IGN scoring metric now?

    DS2's world/map is about the same as 3 imo. Lots of branching paths.

    If you look at maps, they are fairly similar. I think I said in the DS2 thread what I thought on the matter:



    it wasn't like DS1 where the game world was like one massive tower and had loads of shortcuts back on itself.

    I'd argue that DS1 is the only game in the series where this is the case (Sekiro probably comes a close second).

    DaS was level select, DS3 may as well have been (kinda cool how Lothric castle is in the starting area but meh). BB was fairly well connected at the start but not really after you leave yharnam.

    I think whatever followed DS1 was going to be a disappointment. The world not being super connected is a bit of a shame in all the follow ups, but they're all still excellent games.

    @Akumer It has great areas but they don't build to a consistent world. It's one of those areas where you know they had much greater scope of the game and ultimately fell short.

    The more you think about how DS1 was designed, the more I think it's a genuine masterpiece. It's incredible how everything is stacked on itself and loops around. And it all connects to the story. Peak game design that.

    I would say DS3 is a lot more linear than DS2 is tbh. The only real branches in DS3 are to the cathedral or the fucking appalling smouldering lake / demon ruins.

    DS2 gets linear towards the end but before then you can pretty much do as you please.

    Pretty much. I don't think it could ever be beaten. BB came close but DS1 is the pinnacle of map design.

    One thing I liked about DS3 is you can see everything in the world, even if you are fairly restricted.

    If you look from Anor Londor, or from Lothric castle (the highest points of the world i think), you can see the swamp, cathedral, settlement, faron keep, irithyll, archdragon peak, pretty much the whole world.

    That's pretty cool and makes it feel a lot more connected than it is. Bit of a clever sleight of hand.

    See, whilst I do think, yes, that's awesome. I think it makes everything feel a bit small. All too close together.

    They well fucked the area transitions in DS2 but I believe it was because they were aiming for something more expansive, that covered a whole landmass.

    @wuntyate I wouldn't know. I seemed to spend a lot of my last playthrough looking up at the world from the bottom of Sen's Fortress having been pushed off the ledges by *SOMEONE*.

    (Hint: It wasn't Quaddy)

    And we even took down Artorias for you when you ragequit. :D :D :D

    When you do a new build do you start again or do NG+

    Also RE The surge 2, I'm playing it at the mo, and it is absolutely a fine Soulslike game. I'd go as far to say it's brilliant.

    The combat is great, and the bosses so far have been real high tier stuff. Very addictive gameloop, my only issue is the story and voice acting are turd.
