It is nice we are getting the games but sad that SpikeChunsoft are just skipping the Vita. 428 would have have been a nice Vita port too (although not actually preexisting would have required some extra porting work) Graxlar: I did just mention the Switch version too, just marked it as secondary to the PS4 one due tothe bonus content (as I don't care too much avout the base SG Elite game) |

I would possibly try Elite but something just seems off about the concept to me. I understand SC starting with the well known series but I would rather have seen Chaos;Head Noah, Robotics;Note (Elite) or Occultic;Nine personally. -

Registered 13 years agoAs good a thread as any.
I just realised it has been ages since I played a visual novel. the Science Adventure series really got me into them, then a drip of Vita games on PS Plus kept me going, with some actually quite fun.
But haven't played any in ages. Anyone got any recommendations on the best around? Preferably on the Switch or Vita, but PC will do (I have a surface so will use that in tablet mode.)
I have played and loved:
Steins Gate (honestly top 5 game ever for me, and I have been gaming since the early 80s)
Chaos Child
Steins Gate 0
Hatoful Boyfriend
A PSVita game I quite liked despite myself, I can't remember the name offhand... Basically steampunk love story with a Sherlock character, Arsene, Count St Germain etc. -

Registered 15 years agoYour Vita game was Code Realize, which has a 'fan disc' out now and another in March with more stories.
I enjoyed Sound of Drop - Fall into Poison on Steam, a lower budget indie horror VN (with no voices IIRC). I got in a Humble Bundle but it should be fairly cheap and I played it on a tablet. I also enjoyed the Corpse Party games which are on Steam and Gog now (as well as PSP/Vita).
If we are looking at more scifi stuff it becomes more challenging (although the upcoming SG remake, SG Elite on PC and PS4 includes the previously unreleased and untranslated Linear Bounded Phenogram VN.) I would have recommended 428: Shibuya Scramble but not sure if it is tablet friendly (I got it on PS4, but remote plays nicely to Vita). I also enjoyed the Vita Utawarerumono games but they can be a bit long winded (and they have srpg battles throughout) -

Will have a look at those. I may also look at Chaos Head for the laptop, I see there is a fan translation for that. Would prefer to stick to legit stuff though.
I really wish they would port the other Science Adventure games. Also tempted to replay Steins Gate when comes on Switch. But not sure if it is a game that you can replay, even years apart. -

Registered 15 years agoI should have mentioned the Zero Escape series too so if you haven't played them I second ozthegweat. There is a doublepack of 999 and VLR on Vita (as well as standlaone VLR) and then Zero Time Dilemma is third in trilogy. Mix of puzzling and VN. There are the Danganronpas too which are a bit less VNy but I enjoyed them all. -

Chaos;Head works well on a tablet but getting the full 'correct' working version was a challenge. Cheers dude.

SG; Elite isn't just a port, they are using a lot of anime sequences including new sequences in it. Doubt there is any new story though so it doesn't interest me but as I said both PC and PS4 have the Linear Bounded Phenogram spinoff included which is supposed to be decent. As for other Science Adventure games now that Spike Chunsoft has taken control themselves we should hopefully see more. Robotics;Note is rumoured and I have a feeling we may get Occultic;Nine (not strictly Sci;Adv) as the light novel translator is the same as the Pqube games IIRC... -

Registered 15 years agoI suppose it is time to update this (increasingly in the wrong section) thread.
I bought SG;Elite on PS4 in the end when it got reduced (just for Linear Bounded Phenogram, not bothered with main game). It is an interesting spinoff with a bunch of mini stories by famous Japanese authors (including Uchikosho of Zero Escape fame) each focused on the point of view of a different character in the game with a bunch of alternative perspectives and new scenarios to slot into the main game (even Tennoji gets a chapter...). Some chapters are darker themed than others which can be a bit sillier. I still have at least 3 to play through (and I suspect there may be more unlocked afterwards) (I have played through 5 I think...). The translation is mostly decent although it could have done wihh another editing pass as there are quite a few minor typos (nothing that isn't immediately obvious so far). Also it is pretty much a kinetic adventure so far (the only choices being you phone messages which only affect replies not the route) but I have enjoyed it so far and if you are a fan of the original games it is worth a read/listen through. Oddly has no trophies on PS4 and is strangely still only available with Elite. Also digital only as PS4 physical comes with a digital code so not on the disc which was disappointing.
I also played through the Switch 8 BIT Adv, which it turns out is a real NES file and has been extracted, *cough*. It is short but was a fun little diversion (think top down exploration of Akiba in the style of a NES JRPG with VN conversations). Not the longest game (a few hours) and you can actually die (no saves too unless you somehow play it with savestates on something...) but an interesting little truncated version of the story that is strictly for playing After the main game. If there is a choice go PC or PS4 for LBP though as it is the superior bonus.
In other SciAdv news the Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace snuck out without warning (digital only sadly) on Switch, PS4 and Steam. Being the romance game I am not sure how interested I am in this one but it does now mean that we have all of the SG games officially in English with the old 8bit Crossover being fan translated available too.
And this year we are apparently getting both Robotics;Notes games in English on PS4, Switch and Steam. These are both in same time line as SG and the Chaos games and have some recurring characters so I am looking forward to both of these (Robotics;Note Elite and Robotocs;Note Dash). First game is supposed to be good and the sequel a lot better. Apparently you should play the SGs and Chaos games before these. (DiPatch translation of vanilla Chaos;Head is only English option for that game with licensing apparently being the obstacle for a proper localisation although there is a PC port and localisation fan effort that is ongoing for Noah)
And as a minor aside 5pb did a remake of the famous Yu-No VN which inspired a lot of the later greats like SG and the Zero Escape series and was one of the first VNs to try and tell a real story and not just be porn. I enjoyed the story in it but be aware that even in its "all ages" and minimally censored western release it does have a lot of embrassing imagery. Not to be played to an audience even though the story and design of the game is really good. Available on Steam (with the one slightly censored scene restored and the context sensitive icons restored), PS4 and Switch (which come with a cool little Yu-No 8 bit game action game for playing afterwards as a code). Game is also a lot more point and clicky than most VNs.
Other than that I hear Otomate is planning to move to Switch now Vita is dead but not checked up all of the details.
My most wanted unannounced game is Machi, the prequel to 428 but I am not holding my hopes up for this one.
As for my previous guess of Occultic;Nine, apparently the Japanese release is still awaiting a concluding chapter so doubt we will see it until it is 'finished' if we do.
Edit - I suppose I should mention that Uchikoshi's AI Somnium Files also came out last year and is a bit more adventure too and well received (only just got around to ordering it recently but played the demo and enjoyed it). Out on Switch, PS4 and Steam. Available physical and digital with an optional LE.
And apparently Raging Loop by Kemco and published by PQube is supposed to be a pretty good and well written horror VN despite technically originating on Japanese mobile. Pretty cheap now too so just ordered it myself. Out on Switch and PS4 (and maybe PC) physically (with An artbook bearing day one edition) and digitally.

Or I could start a new VN thread if that'd work better. -

Registered 16 years ago@Ror I think what we actually need is a general-purpose Japanese games thread. It's not just VNs - mid and low-tier JRPGs etc never quite seem to have the critical mass for their own threads on here. I'm thinking of the likes of the Tales Of games, but also the non-Persona Shin Megami Tensei titles, plus the Disgaeas, Ateliers and so on. Pity, because there are a good few gems in that range, often more interesting than the Western indie titles. -
I'd be up for a thread like that. I generally like these sorts of games although I could do without the over the top fan service elements that some of them go for. -

Registered 15 years agoYu-no suffers a lot of fan service sadly, but it is a story that was worth playing despite that.
Utawarerumono 1 is getting a PS4/PC release soon and I imagine it will be a lot more palatable than its original fan-translated full on nudity release.
As for threads perhaps a "Steins;Gate and SciAdv/VN" thread which could also contain other VNs and some form of obscure JRPG thread. I made a Dungeon Crawler RPG thread years ago but haven't updated it for a while.. -

Registered 15 years agoSo, an update I suppose (and I will do a condensed version on the General Japanese thread).
Updates : Played, finished and really enjoyed Raging Loop, well translated with some difficult source material. Interesting story and characters with slightly weak character art being my main criticism (and it isn't that bad really). Worth a look for fans of the genre.
And the main point of the post is that Spike Chunsoft have revealed (a week ago but I missed it) that Robotics;Note Elote and DaSH are actually coming out in a doublepack on October 14th on PS4, Switch and Steam, with a simple day 1 edition including a few badges in both Europe (published by Numskull) and US fir consoles. Pleasantly surprised by this as I expected two full price releases here. However for those who haven't played the original Chaos;Head I hear it really should be played (or watch a lets play if you prefer) before RN. RN is set after the Chaos and SG games and will refer to previous titles, especially the sequel. The first game came out before SG0 and CC IIRC so less prior knowledge is suggested.
Thankfully I am okay as I played the fan translation of CH before CC (took a lot of work getting the right files) and the Nitroplus part of the original game is apparently what is stopping any chance of an official release in English of CH Noah (the enhanced version with more rlutes) and no fan translation exoected any time soon.
With this release we are pretty much only missing Chaos;Head(Noah), Occultic;Nine (which has a different canon amd I assume is still unfinished in Japan) and Chaos;Head/Child Love Chu Chus (which apparently are a lot more canon than the Steins;Gate Darling's Embrace game). My main fear with this release is if the Switch version will have both games complete on cart or not as I would potentially pick that version for potential portability but will go PS4 if incomplete as I won't support that sale system. (I grudgingly dealt with SG LBP being digital only bonus with SG Elite by buying it heavily reduced and would buy iy on Switch if it got the physical 3 pack of LBP, SG0 and MDE that Japan got now that all of the games are localised (I still haven't bought MDE due to its digital only nature). -

Registered 9 years agoNot that it's necessarily a selling point, but Murder By Numbers also has one of the only openly gay characters I've seen in a non-yaoi VN. It's a lot more progressive than Phoenix Wright. -
Collar X Malice is out soon on Switch too (and its fan disc). I have it on Vita but not played it yet. Is supposed to be pretty good. I also enjoyed the original Code Realize on Vita which is also on Switch. Not my usual type of VN (see your Sci;Adv style) but the setting worked.
World End Syndrome is also one some people liked and the setting sounds interesting, got it on Switch but backlogged...
I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the existing Sci;Adv games hit Switch. Surely it will get a physical of Steins;Gate Divergencies Assort (compilation of 0, My Darlings Embrace and Lonear Bounded Phenogram) now that all have been localised (and Steins Gate name being a bigger seller than most VNs)...
Some people also liked Root Letter (another where the Vita one is on backlog) which has an enhanced Switch release. The rest of Pqube's stuff doesn't really appeal though.
