I live in Denmark and really want to vote in the UK elections (I'm English btw!! ) Anyone know how this is done? Do I go to the relevant parties web-site, or do I had to contact the British Embassy over here, or is it too late now?Any help would be appreciated |

Registered 20 years agoIt's too late to register as a voter if you live in the UK so I'm guessing it's too late for an overseas ballot. Try the embassy anyway.

How long have you been out of the country? If a polling card arrives at your last address with the option to make a postal vote, then get your parents to send it in. As long as you vote for Labour it'll be ok, any other vote would be fraud.

The Embassy can't help you. Contact the electoral registrar in the place you were last registered to vote in the UK. For me, for example, I was last registered to vote in Hammersmith & Fulham so I contacted the registrar in Hammersmith & Fulham council and she sent me the form. If you're living abroad and applying for the first time you'll need to provide various documentation to show that you're a British citizen and eligible to vote. Obviously you're too late for the 5 May election but why not get on there anyway, it will make it easier next time. You can send the form in by fax. You can vote in one of two ways, either appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf in the UK, or ask for a postal vote (which you can now do from abroad).
Incidentally, you have a fifteen year limit on overseas voting. More than fifteen years since you were last resident full-time in the UK and you lose your vote. So this was probably the last general election I could have voted in.
