Now GameSpy has become the last really big site to announce that it's going the way of optional ad free subscription I was wondering if anyone else in the forums was considering it worth the cash for a GS subscription (if you're already a regular there) and if you'd like to see something like that at EG?

Would you pay something like £1/month or £10/year to get EG but without any ads?

No. The ads, the way they are now, do not bother me that much. Even Zelda add. I never liked GS anyway.

Only site I pay for is Gamespot. I feel that is the only one worth it.

If I had BB I'd probably sign up to IGN or Gamespot. EG's ads are fine, don't bother me at all.

I have no problem with EG's ads, as long as they stay quiet, and don't flash rapidly in vile colours. I'm not sure that there is much of a market for a subs model for sites like EG at the moment anyway.

Once again I feel I should mention that EG has no intention to do any kind of subscription service.

I don't like the ads on Eurogamer and Tiscali.co.uk seems to be the worst site for pop up ads.

As for Gamespot I'am not impressed with the server speeds, when downloading.

I subsribed to Gamespot and IGN. Gamespot is getting renewed, IGN is not.
The reason? IGN you still get horrible adverts even when subscribed...

Gamespot when subscribed is a nice interface and easy to search for the games I want...+ you can go right back to reviews for dreamcast, even N64!

As well as the free gameguides in PDF...It's the best...

I'd pay for EG as well, but I'd want easier searches for release dates etc + a forum split into segments.

Gamespot got a new DL method, I just used it for Elite Force 2 demo, got like 400 speed with it. Was really fast.

If I were to subscribe to any site it would be gamespot for their streaming/downloadable video reviews/previews and extensive media.

I would probably pay for EG with no ads, but only through loyalty to the site and the regulars. I can't imagine more than the core regulars forking out when gamespot and IGN offer so much more content for relatively little money.

This is the second time a thread like this has started up... I wouldn't mind if it was us at Eurogamer asking you these questions, but it isn't. I'll be generous and assume people aren't trying to do market research on the Eurogamer forums, but nevertheless, can these types of threads cease to be posted please?

Iirc mouse or rauper have recently asked what we would be willing to pay for a good download section, so a thread like this isn't too far-fetched, is it. I am not implying that I suspect EG to become a pay-site, mind.

edit: Cripes, I was wrong, it was you who asked, Nick. ;-)

Does that qualify for a 'Busted'? ;)
That said, I can see where Nick is coming from, as the thread on Sony reducing the price of the PS2 (on Good Friday) went from cautious 'where did you get this information from?' to 'off I go to get one' in a short space of time.

Hehe! That's what I mean, I'm comfortable with asking these kinds of questions ... and when we asked about paying for downloads it was a legitimate question I wanted to know the answer to, because it affected how we took the site forward. However, we haven't asked about paying for content because we're not even considering that at this stage, and I don't want people to get the impression that we are... it can turn into some kind of assumption that we will all too easily!

This thread has a title of 'gamespy' so I doubt that it will mislead people that much.
